So-so book
By old gray mare
Normally, I enjoy books on the histories of our foodstuffs. This one, however, I didn't particularly enjoy. Much of the writing is pedantic, tedious and repetitive and I believe the author overstates her case, as almost every chapter reiterates her belief that the pumpkin symbolizes America's "lost" agrarian past and Thomas Jefferson's "nation of yeoman farmers" ideal. But, I must admit, that after I finished the book, I made a pumpkin pie. And for those that think of pumpkin pie as bland, use more cinnamon, ginger and cloves than what the recipes generally call for.

I also was disturbed when the author referred to the opossum as a rodent. Opossums are marsupials -- pouched mammals like kangaroos, not rodents -- which are placental mammals. Am not sure whether the author or the editor needs to bone up on their vertebrate zoology, but glaring errors like this make one wonder what other misconceptions may have crept into a book.

Pretty interesting history of the pumpkin.

I guess this was about what I expected. The trouble is, it's a short book that is still twice as long as it needs to be. And half of the book is footnotes. It seemed to run over the same ground quite a bit (e.g.: stressing, through the years, the pumpkin's popular connection to America's agrarian past) and I found myself glazing over the most trivial parts of it. But it did leave me feeling like more of an expert on pumpkins in it's repetition. I'll never look at a pumpkin quite the same way. I'm not sorry I read it, just that it was rather overpriced for what it is.

A curious book about pumpkins.

This is a Weyerhaeuser Environmental Book, which has a lot of prestige. It is a difficult book to describe; it reads as if Ott turned her doctoral dissertation into a book. Some portions sparkle and some are monograph-dull. I am not sure why it is considered environmental, unless the human rural environment is the reason Weyerhaeuser (a major timber producer) added it to the series.

The cultural history of common items can offer insight into culture, which is why, I would guess, most people would read this book. It includes some history of pumpkins, but mostly it is concerned with American social history, a combination of food, farming, icons and such. She describes pumpkins as traditionally food for the poor, and the pumpkin went into decline as the 1800s progressed. The pumpkin has been resurrected so to speak, by Halloween and Thanksgiving, as material for pies and objects symbolizing fall.

Much of the book is concerned with how the holidays changed the status of pumpkins to make it more positive, including how pumpkins help keep a number of small farms afloat. She discusses particular canning firms, and how canned pumpkins became available and then commonly used for pie filling. It is less history of the pumpkin as a food than as the pumpkin as a symbol of things rural and the rural fall--social nostalgia, really. The book could be shorter but as is, it's not long--just that the slow parts make it seem longer. Four stars rather than three because of the offbeat subject. It is more personal that all this might seem, and yes, the book also discusses pie.

About the Author
Alessio Ponzio received his PhD in history and politics from the Universitá Roma Tre and is now pursuing a second degree at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in women’s studies and history. ROBERT BRENTON BETTS is a retired professor at the University of Balamand, Lebanon, and at the American University of Beirut. He holds a PhD in international relations and Middle East studies from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and is the author of three previously published books: "Christians in the Arab East: A Political Study" (John Knox Press, 1978), "The Druze" (Yale University Press, 1988), and "The Southern Portals of Byzantium" (Musical Times, 2009). The Druze by Betts

I find this book an objective and encompassing account of a fascinating people. Betts includes excerpts from many references on these people and explains the political and historical context of each statement. He then adds his own perspective from in-depth research and first-hand personal experience. It is concise but covers the subject extensively by addressing historical, social, political, and traditional aspects of it with an interesting section on Druze Women.

I truly enjoyed reading this concise and informative book. It will take you less than three hours to read. The only thing that disturbed me is the author's clear anti-Israel stance which might be understandable from the authors personal biography but which shouldn't be part of his elaboration on the Druze.

The Renaissance in Europe: An Anthology presents a selection of primary sources illuminating a wide range of subjects, from a Sforza banquet menu to Luther's The Babylonian Captivity of the Church. The third volume, The Renaissance in Europe: A Reader, considers the importance of the Renaissance to the development of Western Civilization by presenting over 30 readings by leading scholars on the themes of humanism, authority, and the roles of men and women. The last two volumes, Courts, Patrons and Poets and Challenges to Authority, will be published in fall 2000. Vietnam created the most sophisticated ceramics in Southeast Asia. John Stevenson , co-author of Vietnamese Ceramics: A Separate Tradition, describes the evolution of Vietnamese ceramics and the contexts in which they were produced, and analyzes their aesthetic attraction. The Museum's senior curator, Donald A. Wood , explains the rich symbolism of decorative motifs found on Vietnamese ceramics. A FINE BOOK, BEAUTIFULLY ORGANIZED

I am a collector of Vietnamese ceramics, and this book is at the very top of the list of my favorites on the subject. It is a slimmer volume than two other recent books on the subject, but its organization makes the difference. The first 30 pages are a fine introduction to Vietnamese ceramics, to Viet Nam in general, and to design elements. Comparisons and contrasts to the better-known ceramics of China add perspective. The rest of the book explores major types of ware, categorized largely by glaze types. Each type is given it's own section, and each section starts with a short introduction. The explanations are clear, and the photographs are excellent. The captions for each object are always adjacent to the photos (often, more than one view of a given piece). This book can serve at least three purposes for readers - to be read right through, as an introduction to the field; to be referred to in an effort to identify a given piece; and to reacquaint one's self with a given type before viewing an exhibition or when considering a possible purchase.

I recommend it highly for both established collectors and persons new to the field.

There's a lot of potential in the story of a young American woman hired onto a Chinese vessel to teach the sailors English as they cross the Pacific, and Kendall, a freelance writer who lives in Australia, hits it from time to time in this swift and eventful memoir of her weeks at sea as "Teach-ah." The setting is ripe for misunderstandings, loneliness, bonding and self-reflection. As her students' English improves and Kendall's Chinese and "Chinglish" develops, she befriends some of the men on board, attempts to sort out a series of cultural faux pas and thinks about her doomed relationship with her boyfriend back home. She hints at the deeper issues that influence her, most especially her nascent homosexuality, but only with glancing strokes that leave much unexplored and the relationship between the reader and writer stymied. The fun, however, is in the stories of the daily navigation of tight quarters, cultural collisions and storms—and the cigarettes, sweets and chicken feet that get them all through the long days and nights of sea and sky. Hilarious journey on the ocean

This is a great, un-put downable read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Kendall takes us into a completely foreign world of ships and sailing; and I don't mean a quiet sail out on the Bay that many people do on the weekend. I am talking SERIOUS sailing, where you loose sight of the coast, where it's just you, a dozen strangers who don't speak English and who love to eat chicken's feet.

The part where she tries to make friends with and feed a shark who swims with the boat is hilarious. The description of sailing through the Panama canal is fascinating. Actually, if I have any criticism of this book, it is that Kendall could have elaborated on this part more as the whole concept fascinated me.

Overall though it was a terrific read.

totally engaging

I am late in writing my review of Gillian's book. Recently I had occasion to give it as a gift to 2 of my friends contemplating a journey. True they had nothing like this in mind, but the whole concept of her endeavor was so appealing i couldn't help but pass it on to other traveling friends.
The writing is alive and you are right their on the boat on choppy seas and with poor clueless tutees and of course Mr. Ding. The tile is charming and and the story is everything a good story should be, suspense, education, resolution, etc, and it is compelling and great read for taking along on a trip or curling up with when you have no intention of going anywhere.

I highly recommend this fast paced exciting read. A substantive story full of twists and turns with insight into the Chinese culture and life on a boat as the only woman. Laugh out loud moments with sensitive emotional highs and lows. Educational, poignant, and an enjoyable journey. Could not put it down.

Spitz's psychoanalytical background, her passion for the role of art as a transmitter of culture, her observations of children's experiences with books, her knowledge of Jewish ritual and writings, and her own vivid childhood memories all inform and influence this work. In the process of explaining why certain titles have endured and in describing the importance of the adult/child interaction in revealing meaning, she provides in-depth analyses of familiar titles. Inside Pictures Books by Ellen Handler Spitz, is an informational narrative that immensely explores and psychoanalytically probes into the power of various picture books. It gives literary, as well as psychoanalytical, critiques and interpretations of numerous pictures and text found in children's picture books. Spitz finds underlying messages in books, not noticed at first glance, which she alerts her readers to. The purpose in writing this book is to make her audience aware that pictures book have the capability to inflict positive and negative affects upon its readers. Due to the vocabulary and topic at hand, this book is best suited for teachers, scholars, and parents.
This book centers on the interpretation of various picture books and the powerful effect of pictorial images in books on the psyche of children. Spitz finds and interprets several commonalities in many bedtime picture books. For example, she explains how books metaphorically use food and the moon to symbolize security and how rhythm is used to ease the transition from an active state to a restful state. She descriptively depicts illustrations and colors, and their aesthetic value and meaning to children. Besides bedtime picture books, Spitz also dissects and reflects on pictures books associated with death and how children cope with devastation and loss. For example, she goes into great depth in covering the story The Accident, by Carol and Donald Carrick. Through this coverage, she reveals the possibility that readers can mirror their personal responses of the book with the character's responses. However, it seems that the response one exhibits depends on their perspective and ability to empathize with others. In addition, she thoroughly explains how the illustrations set the mood and foreshadow later events in the story. She depicts behavior issues found in children's books and relates them to gender, children's needs and impulses, and human relationships. Spitz also analyzes books that praise uniqueness and implicitly and explicitly dispatch a message to their readers about self acceptance. Other underlying threads incorporated into this book include: how children's books portray gender bias's, race, and incorporate common childhood fears, relationships, curiosities, and displays of emotion like anger, fear, and love.
I find this book to be very insightful in understanding how children view pictures, identify with and find comfort in books, and are affected by the morals and themes intertwined in the text and the pictures of books. It suggests the possibility for books and pictures to contain underlying messages, either implicit or explicit, that have an immense impact in various aspects of a child's life. Although I do not fully agree with all of Spitz's critiques, and sometimes feel that she dove too deep into pictures and text to pull out unrelated and unassociated issues, I respect that they come from her point of view. I am left to wonder if her book interpretations parallel the intent of the different writers and illustrators incorporated into this book.
I enjoyed reading this book because of the memories it brought back of my own childhood with books. I would recommend this book to those interested in learning about the power that picture books have in the lives of children. Overall, this book forced me to consider other interpretations of children's book and to compare them to my own. I closed the book with new insights into various books and ways of analyzing the pictures and text found in those books.

Ellen Handler Spitz's Inside Picture Books is a nonfiction book. The book should be read by parents or teachers who are interested in finding out about picture books and want what the books are about and if they will have a positive or negative on the children. The theme of the book is children's picture books. Spitz talks about many different picture books and tells how the books will affect the children positively or negatively.
Spitz's book is broken down into chapters and each chapter has a different concept. She discusses books that are about bedtime, books dealing about accidents and death, and books that talk about children who do not always behave. Spitz uses the pictures to explain the message of the story.
The one thing that I liked about Spitz's book is that she described many different picture books. Most of these books I have never read and some I had never even heard before. Another thing that Spitz does with her book is that she focuses on the many aspects of the books, such as, the pictures and the language.
There are some things, however that I did not really like about this book. For one thing, she spends a lot of time talking about the pictures of the book, but rarely shows any these pictures in the book. I think that it would have been more effective if, after describing a picture, to include the picture next to the description. She would not necessarily have to do that for every picture she describes; only for the ones that would be more memorable.
Also, I think she analyzes the books way too much. Younger readers probably would not look that much into these books. They would read them because they like the book and like the pictures. Parents will probably just read these books to their children because they enjoyed them as children and will want to share that enjoyment with their children. I do not think that they will sit and analyze the books with their children after reading the book. In my opinion, she ruins a lot of the books by analyzing them to death.
I do not know if I would recommend this book to other readers or not. The book is good if someone wanted to find out about picture books. It has a good amount of children's books listed. On the other hand, it analyzes these books a little too much for my taste. For those readers who want to enjoy the books they read as children with their own children, I suggest that they do not read this book because it may ruin the books they love most forever. I think that I would give this book two stars.

Get's you thinking

While reading this book written by Ellen Spitz, one theme is carried on throughout her work. Children's books can and do have a profound affect on children, not only when they are young, but also when the reader gets older because we are now able to appreciate the sometimes complex themes that are read in children's books. Throughout this book, we hear Spitz's thought on a wide variety of books that I'm sure were either her favorite books as a kid, or books that she enjoyed reading to other children.
Chapter one of the book started off very well. She told of a few books that students of hers at Harvard told her about. My favorite story was about a child who loved the story of The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams. This teenage boy at the time overheard his mother reading his favorite story to his younger brother. As Spitz put it best, "Teenage machismo proved no match for a spotted brown Rabbit with floppy ears, a Skin Horse, and the Boy who loved them"(p.3). This teenager, at the time, couldn't resist not hearing the story. He ended up going in the bedroom and laying on the bed with his brother and mom and listening to the rest of the story.
One thing that Spitz could have cleared up for the reader a little bit was the relationship between the author and the illustrator. For example, Spitz did a review on the book "The Accident," by Carol and Donald Carrick. From what Spitz wrote, she could almost predict what could happen in the book by looking at the cover. After reading the book, I could see how she saw the things she did in the cover. But my question is, was that planned out between the author and illustrator, or was it a coincidence. She also kind of contradicted herself by saying that the cover signified death, and then the next line, she said the cover had a calming effect. Either way, she gave good insight, but that author-illustrator relationship would be nice to know.
This book would be helpful for a variety of people. Knowing that this book is more of a scholarly read, I wouldn't recommend this book for the person who just feels like sitting down to read for entertainment, because this won't do it. On the other hand, if a parent or teacher wants to dive deeper into what picture books do for young children and investigate different themes in those books, this is the book for you. For any educator, investigative parent, or anyone interested in picture books, I recommend you read this book in order to broaden your thought processes about certain topics.
