Freud and Freudians on Religion: A ReaderFrom Yale University Press

This book presents selections from Freud's writings on religion and from the work of five more recent contributors to the psychoanalytic study of religion: David Bakan, Erik H. Erikson, Heinz Kohut, Julia Kristeva, and D.W. Winnicott. It is the first collection of texts in the psychology of religion that is oriented more toward religious studies than toward the study of psychology. In his introduction, Donald Capps points out that psychoanalysis resembles religions in the way in which its founding documents (Freud's own writings) have been closely read, have evoked interpretive battles, and have been reassessed and reapplied in response to changing social and cultural circumstances. He notes that just as Freud's writings on religion focus on the biblical text, the majority of the authors included here do likewise, showing how the Bible may be read psychoanalytically. Both Freud and his successors, says Capps, also reflect the high value that the Christian culture of the West has placed on painting and sculpture, revealing the importance of perception and imagination to the psychoanalytic study of religion. Capps highlights the ways in which all the Freudians work intertextually with Freud's writings, with the writings of other authors included in the book, and with other writings of their own.

From Publishers Weekly
In 1927's The Future of an Illusion, Sigmund Freud predicted that the "illusion" of religion had no future and would be abandoned by modern society. But Freud is long dead, may he rest in peace, and religion is still very much around. In Freud and Freudians on Religion: A Reader, Donald Capps of Princeton Theological Seminary pulls together some of Freud's most famous thoughts on religion and also reprints essays by five of the psychoanalyst's intellectual heirs, including Erik Erikson and Julia Kristeva. This is a useful, well-organized collection.

Freud is sharp on religion
By Santi Tafarella
This is an excellent introduction to Freudian perspectives on religion. The introduction to Freud's thought is clear and the selections from Freud's writings are good ones. The book has a number of good essays (in addition to Freud's). There is, for example, an exceptionally interesting essay by David Bacan on the book of Job. The only weakness in the book is that other early psychonanalysts contemporary with Freud (such as Otto Rank) are not represented in the anthology. In other words, the text samples the writings of Freud and then jumps to the writings of psychoanalysts working after 1950. But something I especially like about this anthology is the psychological connections it makes between art and religion.

Gay Bar: The Fabulous, True Story of a Daring Woman and Her Boys in the 1950s, by Will Fellows, Helen P. Branson

Vivacious, unconventional, candid, and straight, Helen Branson operated a gay bar in Los Angeles in the 1950s—America’s most anti-gay decade. After years of fending off drunken passes as an entertainer in cocktail bars, this divorced grandmother preferred the wit, variety, and fun she found among homosexual men. Enjoying their companionship and deploring their plight, she gave her gay friends a place to socialize. Though at the time California statutes prohibited homosexuals from gathering in bars, Helen’s place was relaxed, suave, and remarkably safe from police raids and other anti-homosexual hazards. In 1957 she published her extraordinary memoir Gay Bar, the first book by a heterosexual to depict the lives of homosexuals with admiration, respect, and love.
In this new edition of Gay Bar, Will Fellows interweaves Branson’s chapters with historical perspective provided through his own insightful commentary and excerpts gleaned from letters and essays appearing in gay publications of the period. Also included is the original introduction to the book by maverick 1950s psychiatrist Blanche Baker. The eclectic selection of voices gives the flavor of American life in that extraordinary age of anxiety, revealing how gay men saw themselves and their circumstances, and how others perceived them.

From Publishers Weekly
From a 21st-century perspective, 1950s bar owner Branson wasn't particularly progressive. The 60-something matron barred "the obvious homosexual" from her modest tavern, strongly preferred patrons who could pass for straight, and didn't allow sexual touching. But the onetime palm reader's spunky memoir about running a gay bar on a crime-prone stretch of L.A.'s Melrose Avenue, first published in 1957, is filled with warm affection for "my boys" and with an uncommon understanding of (and sympathy for) gays, at a time when California law prohibited "inverts" from gathering in bars, and vice squad entrapment of "deviates" was commonplace. By pairing this new edition of Branson's insightful memoir with a study of 1950s America, Fellows (A Passion to Preserve) clarifies how ahead of her time Branson was: she believed, for example, that being gay was about more than sex and that gay men living together could consider themselves married. This stimulating account of support for gay rights pre-Stonewall is an eye-opener.

Review

“Will Fellows uncovers a remarkable time capsule of how gay folks lived and gathered a half-century ago in a small bar on Melrose in Los Angeles, interweaving the remarkable charm of bar owner Helen Branson’s 1957 memoir with his own deft cultural analysis.”—Tim Miller, performer and author of Body Blows and 1001 Beds

“Fascinating, poignant, hilarious, and eye-opening. Fellows adds depth, detail, and insight to Branson’s groundbreaking original work.”—Philip Gambone, author of Travels in a Gay Nation.

"Few books are unique, but this one comes close. It’s the firsthand, contemporary account by a straight woman, Branson, who owned a gay bar in 1950s Los Angeles. Originally published in 1957, the book shows Branson to be a compassionate and astute observer of gay mores, now providing a rare primary source of gay life in an era from which such information is hard to obtain. Researchers will find material on the relationships between gay men and women, what gay parties were like, and the distinct house rules that Branson set up for patronage of her bar, among other topics. Fellows (Farm Boys: Lives of Gay Men from the Rural Midwest) intersperses her narrative with contextualizing historical and political information that greatly aids readers’ understanding. Verdict: Donald Vining’s multivolume A Gay Diary and Ricardo J. Brown’s compelling The Evening Crowd at Kirmser’s: A Gay Life in the 1940s are related titles, but these were first published long after the fact. General readers of memoir or LGBT lit, as well as historians, will find Gay Bar to be a charming, informative read."—Library Journal

“We typically prefer our pop culture shiny and new with the tags still on, but author Will Fellows’ latest makes a strong case for vintage shopping.”—Modern Tonic

“Fascinating and vigorously lucid, this book is a precious time capsule jetting readers back over a half-century ago to a time when the gay community was threatened, defiled, beaten, and stigmatized without restraint, thankful to have folks like Helen Branson on their side, but fully aware that the fight for equality was only just the beginning.”—Bay Area Reporter

“This incredible inside look of a gay bar in 1950s Los Angeles, owned and operated by a straight woman, Helen P. Branson, reflects our gay history as well as Los Angeles culture. Writer Will Fellows adds commentary and historical perspective in this fascinating memoir that was written in 1957.”—Frontiers

Step back in time to meet Helen and "her boys" ...
By Bob Lind
More than a decade before the uprising at the Stonewall Inn, gay bars existed in most major cities, but were often poorly-run establishments targeted by homophobes, mobsters and police entrapment. Helen's bar was different, a 1950's oasis located in a crime-riddled area of Los Angeles, where quiet, closeted gay men could meet, drink and socialize with their peers. With her intuition and experience working in other bars, Helen screened new customers, tipping off her regulars through various methods when she was unsure whether they were legit. She became their protector, friend, occasional advisor and confessor, and they were very loyal to her in return.

The late Helen P. Branson released her memoir "Gay Bar" in 1957, and it became one of the first books by a heterosexual to portray gay men with empathy, love and respect. In this re-issue, Will Fellows takes Branson's original chapters and interleaves updates, subsequent research and commentary to put them in perspective. While Branson's observations occasionally mimic the stereotypes about gay men at the time, it's clear that she had only admiration for "her boys" and was thankful for the chance she had to be with them. The book is really a "time capsule" of gay history, not a scholarly work, but a look at a time and place one would otherwise not discover. It is both enchanting and enlightening reading for open-minded people of any age or sexual orientation, and I give it a full five stars out of five.

Most I've ever learned in a gay bar
By Tripp Evans
What a fascinating, eye-opening read. The author frames Helen Branson's original memoir, Gay Bar - a long-forgotten time capsule of gay life in the 1950s - with his own, thoughtfully written historical background. The back-and-forth between Branson's writing and Fellows' commentary makes for a lively conversation (and very good company); both reveal the tremendous pressure to conform that gay men faced -- and enforced -- in the 1950s, and the ways these men managed to subvert stereotypical expectations. Fellows' frequent references to gay periodicals like One and the Mattachine Review perfectly complement Branson's account; they offer the reader a broader view of this period, and bring in the voices of the very men Branson writes about. For me, it was a revelation to see how conservative these magazines (and readers) sometimes were, and also how refreshingly contemporary their readers' concerns could be. It was fascinating to read that, nearly half a century before the establishment of Don't Ask Don't Tell, some believed military life itself "turned" men gay -- and I found Branson's treatment of gay marriages in the 1950s both prescient and sympathetic. A fantastic read, and a must for anyone interested in this critical, pre-Stonewall era.

Josefina Niggli (1910-1983) was one of the most successful Mexican American writers of the early twentieth century. Born of European parents and raised in Mexico, she spent most of her adult life in the United States, and in her plays and novels she aimed to portray authentic Mexican experiences for English-speaking audiences. Niggli crossed borders, cultures, and genres, and her life and work prompt interesting questions about race, class, gender, modernity, ethnic and national identity, and the formation of literary canons. anthology recovers her historical dramas, most of which have been long out of print or were never published. These plays are deeply concerned with the aftermath of the 1910 Mexican Revolution, imagining its implications for Mexico, Mexican Americans, and U.S.-Mexico relations. A wonderful collection of plays!
By Dr. Ervin Nieves
I met Yolanda Padilla in a conference years ago (around 2004), and as a fellow Niggli scholar who's written on Mexican Village, Step Down, Elder Brother, and A Miracle for Mexico -- and some of her few previously published plays -- I welcome wholeheartedly the publication of the many previously unpublished plays presented by Padilla, and William Orchard.

All Chican@ scholars owe both of you a great debt!

As in the case of Elizabeth Coonrod Martinez, I owe you both a beer next time we meet in a conference!

You have my highest regard, respect, and gratitude!

Some people want to rush through Seder to get to eat. Others prefer to spend a lot of time reading and discussing. If you want a beautiful book to peruse as well as a useable Haggadah, this may be for you. I got it for my bar mitzvah many years ago and still give it as a gift years later.

Great Translation by Martin. Highly Accessible.
By H. Hawkins
After doing a lot of research into Catullus translations for a class, I picked this book. His edition is 1) complete and 2) consistently good. His use of modern slang and idioms is pretty convincing, and this is absolutely crucial since Catullus' poetry involves so much use of lively street expressions. Catullus selections in anthologies almost never reproduce the really filthy poems... I highly recommend the complete Martin translation for a more balanced view!

Heroines of the Qing: Exemplary Women Tell Their Stories (Modern Language Initiative Books), by Binbin Yang

Heroines of the Qing introduces an array of Chinese women from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries who were powerful, active subjects of their own lives and who wrote themselves as the heroines of their exemplary stories. Traditionally, "exemplary women" (lienu)―heroic martyrs, chaste widows, and faithful maidens, for example―were written into official dynastic histories for their unrelenting adherence to female virtue by Confucian family standards. However, despite the rich writing traditions about these women, their lives were often distorted by moral and cultural agendas. Binbin Yang, drawing on interdisciplinary sources, shows how they were able to cross boundaries that were typically closed to women―boundaries not only of gender, but also of knowledge, economic power, political engagement, and ritual and cultural authority. Yang closely examines the rhetorical strategies these "exemplary women" exploited for self-representation in various writing genres and highlights their skillful negotiation with, and appropriation of, the values of female exemplarity for self-empowerment.

Review
"This is the first book to examine exemplary women's own accounts of their lives, moving from biographical to autobiographical accounts. Heroines of the Qing is original and significant."―Xiaorong Li, author of Women's Poetry of Late Imperial China: Transforming the Inner Chambers

"A daring, path-opening book. The integration of narration and analysis makes the book accessible to the lay reader while speaking to specialists in history and literature."―Dorothy Ko, author of Cinderella's Sisters: A Revisionist History of Footbinding

"Binbin Yang's path-breaking study of Qing women writers' self-empowerment as female exemplars takes the field of women's culture in late imperial China to a whole new level. In addition to exploring women's previously well-known talent in poetry, Yang engages with a diverse range of texts by women in unexpected genres – such as genealogy writing, medical treatises, and inscriptions to autobiographical paintings – to reveal the lived realities of these writing heroines. A stunning achievement."―Grace Fong, author of Herself an Author: Gender, Agency, and Writing in Late Imperial China

The People and the King: The Comunero Revolution in Colombia, 1781, by John Leddy Phelan

In The People and the King, John Leddy Phelan reexamines a well-known but long misunderstood event in eighteenth-century Colombia. When the Spanish colonial bureaucratic system of conciliation broke down, indigenous groups resorted to armed revolt to achieve their political ends.
As Phelan demonstrates in these pages, the crisis of 1781 represented a constitutional clash between imperial centralization and colonial decentralization. Phelan argues that the Comunero revolution was not, as it has often been portrayed, a precursor of political independence, nor was it a frustrated social upheaval. The Comunero leaders and their followers did not advocate any basic reordering of society, Phelan concludes, but rather made an appeal for revolutionary reform within a traditionalist framework.

Thorough Research, Solid Interpretation
By Gary W. Graff
Phelan's scrupulous research in primary sources in Colombia and a thorough reckoning of the secondary literature make this a "must read" to understand the late colonial society in Nueva Granada. He brings to this book decades of knowledge and research on the Catholic Hispanic culture that was the ethos for European culture in Hispanic America.
This is a work that treats both local history, the history of a region that formed a nation, and a broader culture that has an enduring impact on the hemisphere's cultures and history.

Experiencing Narrative Worlds: On the Psychological Activities of Reading, by Richard J. Gerrig

What does it mean to be transported by a narrative - to create a world inside one's head? How do experiences of narrative worlds alter our experience of the real world? In this book Richard Gerrig integrates insights from cognitive psychology and from research in linguistics, philosophy, and literary criticism to provide a cohesive account of what have most often been treated as isolated aspects of narrative experience. Drawing on examples from Tolstoy to Toni Morrison, Gerrig offers new analyses of some classic problems in the study of narrative. He discusses the ways in which we are cognitively equipped to tackle fictional and nonfictional narratives; how thought and emotion interact when we experience narrative; how narrative information influences judgments in the real world; and the reasons we can feel the same excitement and suspense when we reread a book as when we read it for the first time. Gerrig also explores the ways we enhance the experience of narratives, through finding solutions to textual dilemmas, enjoying irony at the expense of the characters in narrative, and applying a wide range of interpretive techniques to discover meanings concealed by and from authors.

Nature's Kindred Spirits: Aldo Leopold, Joseph Wood Krutch, Edward Abbey, Annie Dillard, and Gary Snyder, by James I. McClintock

In Nature's Kindred Spirits James McClintock shows how their mystical experiences with the wild led to dramatic conversions in their thinking and behavior.  By embracing the ecstasy of nature, they reject modern alienation and spiritual confusion.
From Aldo Leopold, America’s most important conservationist and author of the classic A Sand County Almanac, to Pulitzer Prize winners Annie Dillard and Gary Snyder and defenders of the desert Joseph Wood Krutch and Edward Abbey, these writers share a common vision that harkens back to Henry David Thoreau and John Muir.  To nineteenth-century Romantic ideals, they add the authority of modern ecological science.  Collectively they have elevated nature’s importance in American culture, shaping the growth of the environmental movement and influencing American environmental policies.
Widely admired among educated readers but relatively neglected by the literary establishment, these writers unite the experiential with the metaphysical, the ordinary with the sacred, the personal with the public, and the natural with the social.  Using ecology as a touchstone, McClintock further draws connections among science, politics, religion, and philosophy to create an enlightening overview of the work of these “kindred spirits.”
