Very helpful when used with the book, not useful on it's own.

This cd allows you to hear the examples of Macedonian that are marked in the book it supplements. The actual recording is not of high quality, and the tracks seem to run into each other, but not bad enough to outweigh the help it provides as a supplement to the the book it was designed to accompany. The quality of the audio sounds like a recording someone did with a tape recorder in their own home. If not used with the book it would be worthless though unless you already know Macedonian, there is no English translation of the tracks, just a person reading the examples of Macedonian from the book. The book, by the way must be purchased separately. It is extremely helpful in spite of it's faults when used how it was design to be used, hence the four stars.

Better than nothing

For someone who's trying to learn Macedonian by themselves in a non-classroom setting, this is quite inadequate. Ideally, you'd have the amount of audio drills that something like an FSI or DLI course would have, but it's only two CDs, so I wasn't expecting the ideal. However, this didn't even meet my low expectations. These CDs contain only a few dialogues and a handful of exercises, in audio CD format--if they had used mp3s, a lot more material could have been included. Most egregiously, the vocabulary lists aren't even included, so you can't learn correct pronunciation of the vast majority of the core vocabulary in the book. But, if you're trying to learn on your own, I guess you're stuck with this. It's better than nothing.

RARE CD to go with book - have had book for quite a few years and could not find CD. FINALLY! Here it is! Overpriced, but I am sure it doesn't have a huge market, so... I swallowed hard and took the price on the chin.

John von Neumann, genius, mathematician, and inventor of the nearly ubiquitous computer architecture that bears his name, blazed trails for both camps in The Computer and the Brain. This short book, which was written originally for Yale's Silliman lectures, but published posthumously, summarizes his views on machine and biological intelligence with unprecedented clarity and precision. His understanding of neuroscience was that of a brilliant and strongly motivated amateur at the end of the 1950s--good enough to take on the problem, but by no means matching his comprehension of the machines to which he had devoted much of his professional life. Still, his take on intracranial computation is stunningly prescient--he looks beyond the then-fashionable digital metaphors to suggest a semi-analog strategy that uses parallel processing to make up for its deficiency in speed. Prominent neuroscientific thinkers Paul M. Churchland and Patricia S. Churchland provide a brief, enlightening foreword to this second edition, placing the author's thinking in context and grounding the reader in the scientific milieu that gave rise to The Computer and the Brain. Although his computer architecture slowly is growing obsolete, von Neumann has given us a more lasting legacy in his thinking about thinking. --Rob Lightner

After 50 years, this book by the genius John von Neumann is still relevant in many aspects. I wish I had read this before I started my cognitive science education or before I have written my cog. sci. thesis. Neumann's insights into the architecture of the information processing of the brain is what many scientists today consider a nearly standard framework.

Anybody in interested in the intersection of computing science and brain research should read this short and sharp book, not only for its contents but also for Neumann's style.

Dated, but always worth reading von Neumann

Von Neumann was one of the most celebrated and prolific mathematicians of the 20'th century; his contributions were legion, and always bore unmistakable creativity and elegance. "The Computer and the Brain" is a record of a lecture series that von Neumann delivered at Yale University in 1957. In these lectures, von Neumann set out to explore connections between computing hardware and their biological counterparts; brains. Von Neumann compared neurons with physical computing elements in terms of size, speed, heat dissipation, capacity, etc., in an attempt to discover what, if anything, could be said to unite them or to set them apart. He drew from what had been learned in designing computer instructions and memories in an attempt to glean some insight into what the brain might be doing. Ever the consummate mathematician, von Neumann was guarded in his statements, never over-reaching or confusing speculation with fact.
The ideas contained in these lectures will come as no great surprise to most scientists today; indeed, I would expect most to simply nod in agreement at most of von Neumann's observations. For example, von Neumann notes that neurons are essentially digital in that they have an all-or-nothing activation energy. However, it is interesting to see how seriously he pursues the idea that the brain may rely upon a mixture of analog and digital encodings; he took absolutely nothing for granted, and may well have been vastly ahead of his time.
Although von Neumann's many references to vacuum tubes and differential analyzers may seem archaic today, his central points remain essentially intact. I'm certain that von Neumann would have felt somewhat vindicated by the explosive advances in semiconductor devices (in both digital and analog incarnations), as well as in machine learning and neurobiology. One can perhaps view von Neumann's lectures as the first glimmerings of what would eventually become fruitful exchanges between computer science and various biological disciplines.
If you are looking for a discussion that will give you some insight into artificial intelligence, neural networks, or brain physiology, then I'm afraid you will likely be disappointed with this book. While many of von Neumann's observations may have been controversial at the time, they have for the most part moved quietly into the collective consciousness of scientists. However, if you have interest in either the historical development of these ideas, or in seeing how one of the preeminent minds of the 20'th century approached this vexing new problem, then it will be worth your time.
What I most enjoyed about this book is von Neumann's methodical and exceedingly cautious approach, coupled with his occasional willingness to speculate. As the vast majority of von Neumann's writings are accessible only to a very small audience, such as his enormously influential treatises on quantum mechanics, geometry, and game theory, and his pioneering work in areas such as functional analysis and operator theory, this little book is perhaps unique in that it lets you in on the ground floor.

About the Author
Lewis A. Coser (1913-2003) began his career teaching at the University of Chicago followed by the University of California. Upon leaving California he went to teach for fifteen years at Brandeis University, where he founded the sociology department, before finally settling in at the State University of New York, Stony Brook. He was the first sociologist to bring together the ideas of conflict theory and structural functionalism. He is a past American Sociologist Association president and author of many works, including Conflict and Consensus, Masters of Sociological Thought, and The Functions of Social Conflict.

In this memoir, he reflects on the dynamics of acculturation, immigrant parenting, interactions with native-born U.S. citizens, and the costs involved in rejecting his country of birth for an adopted nation. He also touches on many of the factors that contribute to migration in both the “sending” and “receiving” countries and explores the contemporary phenomenon of accelerated immigration.
    With its blend of personal anecdotes and scholarly information, Almost Home addresses both individual and policy-related issues to provide a moving portrait of the impact of migration on those who, like Cavalcanti, confront both the wonder and the disorientation inherent in the immigrant experience.

Interesting story of the life and struggles of an immigrant

This is a very interesting story of one man's journey from his home in Brazil to his new life in the US. He came to the US as a student and eventually became a citizen. The struggles of never quite having a "home" as he is an immigrant from Brazil and so is somewhat of an outsider here, but at the same time, when he returns home to Brazil, he is too American to fit neatly into his former life and culture.

I became friends with H. B. (Keo) Cavalcanti when we were both in graduate school at Vanderbilt University, although I didn't know that much about his former life. This was like reconnecting with an old friend, and I also had a first-hand look into the struggles which immigrants face as they cross cultures and try to find out who they are in both old and new lives.

H.B. “Keo” Cavalcanti is a renaissance guy—with degrees in theology, law, and sociology. His writing is clear and at times deeply moving.

My fellow economists sometimes disparage sociology. “It’s not science” they argue, because it is often lacking theoretical and empirical rigor. True, true, yet the search for “truth” often requires a rigorous analysis of a different sort—exploratory, cross-disciplinary, and deeply personal. That is the magnificent book that Cavalcanti has produced. A parallel, if you want, is with Elliot Liebow’s masterful, Tally's Corner: A Study of Negro Streetcorner Men (1967). I have no idea if that book “held up” under academic scrutiny. I just know what a profound impact it had on me when I read it. It caused me to be open to a new way of thinking on an important topic. It did not settle things so much as stir them up. A glass of water seems to be crystal clear, a stereotype firmly in place—and now the sediment and contents are stirred up.

That is the sense I get of what Cavalcanti has accomplished in this important work. He has taken the attitude and motivations of an immigrant and thrown them into question. One cherished model in economic immigration is the rational economic actor model, compelled by the push/pull of costs and benefits. Cavalcanti’s account explicitly takes aim at that model, which he argues requires too much rationality, planning, and knowledge of a young and naïve immigrant—at least in his own case.

Cavalcanti’s background is fascinating, growing up a Protestant in Northeast Brazil, whose grandparents were converted by missionaries from the American south sent after the Civil War. Even as a Brazilian, he felt something of an outsider because of his religion. He also came of age in Brazil during the tumultuous 1960s, when a military coup and subsequent insurgence caused a severe political repression that affected many personally, including Cavalcanti’s family. [Coincidentally, this was also my period of coming of age in Brazil, although I was in the southern city of São Paulo from 1964-1969.]

Cavalcanti’s account of immigration, looking back over last three decades, celebrates the joy of becoming an American, and “coming home” to a place that feels right in terms of freedom and opportunity. At the same time, he is only “almost home.” The cost of migration, in terms of lost family connections, deeply weighs on him. The difficult process of assimilation is incomplete—perhaps not for his American-born and raised son—and that incompleteness leaves an empty hole, of never quite belonging.

Every page of this book brought a nod from me. Having spent 11 of my first 16 years out of the States, I returned to America almost as an immigrant, in the sense of having to learn the local customs of teenage youth. Like Cavalcanti, I never quite fit in. Of that, I am glad, because differences are what create comparative advantages. It certainly compelled Cavalcanti to become an expert on immigration, and me to devote a large part of my professional life to economic development.

Even without this connection, Cavalcanti’s book will resonate I think, with many readers who would like a thoughtful and deeply inspiring account of how the global economic system affects individual lives. I recommend it highly.

A Professor Reflects on His Experience as a Brazilian and, Now an American Citizen

Written by an esteemed professor, but easy to read. The content provides new information on what it is like to immigrate to
the United States, expecting to eventually go home to Brazil, but then to begin the long path to U.S. citizenship. But, how does one deal with the contradictions of missing family, which is so important in Brazil; trying to explain to family why he wants to live in a new country; why his son is 100% American, not interested in his heritage and extended family. The mixture of Brazilian history and culture, and the experiences of a professional immigrant, make this an excellent combination of intellectual knowledge and a caring and compassionate man groping through the feelings about being at home, and yet, not at home. Definitely a 5 Star ratings.

Prior to contact with European settlers, most Native American tribes held their two-spirit members in high esteem, even considering them spiritually advanced. However, after contact - and religious conversion - attitudes changed and social and cultural support networks were ruptured. This discrimination led to a breakdown in traditional values, beliefs, and practices, which in turn pushed many two-spirit members to participate in high-risk behaviors. The result is a disproportionate number of two-spirit members who currently test positive for HIV.

Using surveys, focus groups, and community discussions to examine the experiences of HIV-positive members of San Francisco's two-spirit community, Indian Blood provides an innovative approach to understanding how colonization continues to affect American Indian communities and opens a series of crucial dialogues in the fields of Native American studies, public health, queer studies, and critical mixed-race studies.

Falcón situates contemporary antiracist feminist organizing from the Americas―specifically the activism of feminists of color from the United States and Canada, and feminists from Mexico and Peru―alongside a critical historical reading of the UN and its agenda against racism.

About the Author
Paul Fussell was born in California in 1924. He served with the 103rd Infantry Division in France and Germany, winning the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Afterwards he attended Harvard and went to become Professor of English Literature at Rutgers University and then at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is now Professor Emeritus. He is married and lives in Pennsylvania.
