At Last... an Explanation of the Israeli Jews' Behavior

I give this book five stars because it is a fabulous book. It solved for me one of the great mysteries of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict: the behavior of the Israeli Jews.

I have been researching this conflict for several years. It is easy to understand the behavior of the Palestinians - we would all behave like them if our land had been taken and we were being viciously oppressed. No need for any fancy psychological explanations. But the Jews?... their behavior seemed inexplicable. I could not understand how the victims could become the victimizers, and of a people who had nothing to do with the horrors that had befallen them.

Avner Falk provides the answer: group narcissism. I experienced an epiphany... of course... that's it! Group narcissism is the result of injury and the Jews certainly were injured with the centuries of anti-Semitism culminating in the Holocaust. Group narcissism manifests itself in grandiosity, arrogance, self-absorption, and a complete lack of respect, empathy and compassion for others. Group narcissism describes the Israel Jews' behavior perfectly. And Avner Falk is an Israeli psychologist... so the book is even more remarkable. How honest and courageous can a man get?

Thought about the morality of Israel's destroying Lebanon? It's the morality of narcissism. It's the morality of a damaged people. It's utter immorality. But I was not surprised by Israel's actions in Lebanon as now I understand the Israeli Jews.

I do have several disagreements with the author though. This whole book, chapter after chapter, suggests equivalence... that the Jews and Palestinians are equally at fault. Not even close. The essential nature of this conflict is asymmetry. The picture on the front cover sets the tone - it shows two equally armed men wacking away at each other. It should show a giant hammering a dwarf. If we are talking military, the Israelis are the giant. If we are talking morality, the Israelis are the dwarf.

Avner Falk suggests that the Palestinians also suffer group narcissism. I've been there often and do not agree. There is widespread depression and many suffer post traumatic stress disdorder (PTSD). Is that any surprise? But I have detected very little grandiosity or arrogance, in fact, the Palestinians seem surprisingly psychologically healthy considering the horrors they have been subjected to. I suspect that Avner Falk has not been to the West Bank or to Gaza in recent times, nor do I think he has ever treated a Palestinian... or he'd know better. I think his view of the Palestinians must come from Israeli newspapers, i.e., propaganda.

Despite these objections, this book is a must-read for anybody who wants to really understand the conflict. No peacemaker, no journalist, no historian, and no policy-maker should miss it... all should read it. Thank you Avner Falk for such enlightenment.

deeper understanding of Arab-Israeli struggle

Falk opens by surveying the "large body of scholarly literature on the Arab-Israeli conflict." The bulk of this scholarship is contained in the bibliography of about 50 pages. Yet the psychology of either side as accounting for the origins of the conflict or as a basic factor in sustaining it is not dealt with as a particular subject in any book; and is rarely even referred to in the volumes literature. Falk is an Israeli psychologist concentrating in political psychology and psychohistory who goes into this ignored psychological factor in depth. The psychology of the opposing sides as formed by their histories, ethnicity, and ties to the land is analyzed, as well as the psychology of leaders of each side, particularly Ariel Sharon and Yassir Arafat. "Psychogeography" is used to clarify the fierce competing visions for the same relatively small area of the Middle East the Palestinians and Israelis have been fighting over for decades. Falk's chapter on "The Psychology of Suicide Bombers" is especially timely and informative considering 9/11 and current events in Iraq.

Israel - Palestine Conflict Psychology (2000)

This Israeli author gives a very balanced overview of the Palestine/Arab-Israel dispute as interpreted by various psychological theories. He presents the conflicting ideas from Arab, Israeli and other psychologists, whether they be pro- or anti-Israel, or pro- or anti-Arab. He even offers the opinions of those who argue that there are no sound psychological theories for the dispute. Along with the other views, he offers his own: that both sides cannot find peace with one another until both acknowledge that they suffer from failing in getting over their grieving for past losses (while he makes the assertion, he offers few concrete `findings' for his contention). The author also reviews different theories as to how the suicide-bombers justify their actions. Despite his extensive review of many psychological issues, and even if all antagonists were to acknowledge his theory, the author does not present anything like a "12-step program" as to how the antagonists can achieve "peace." The author offers no `solutions' as to who is going to `own' the Temple Mount, where Jerusalem's city borders are to be drawn, or where the `Barrier Wall' is to be finalized. Nonetheless, this book makes for an informative read, but leaves the reader still searching for a book/study that seems "convincing" that psychoanalysis has something to offer in resolving this dispute. A True Life Adventure Expedition Stand Out

Within the genre of real life adventure books, Endurance is definitely a stand out. I am lucky to have a brother who regularly reads about explorers and wilderness adventures and recommends to me only the best of the best. Other must-reads in the genre are The Long Walk (though that turns out to be most likely fiction so I no longer recommend it), Into the Wild, and Arctic Adventure: My Life in the Frozen North. Endurance tells the true story of Ernest Shakleton and his crew's ill-fated and legendary expedition to Antarctica. It was likely one of history's best outcomes for what was essentially a disaster.

At the time of launching, Shakleton's expedition was history's most extensively planned exploratory trip to Antarctic, complete with a photographer, scientists, carpenters and engineers (a crew of 27 in total). Shakleton's goal was to transverse and study Antarctic. When they set off in 1914, this expedition was the pride of the United Kingdom. Shakleton was the toast of the town for his bravery and expertise. For his bravery he is still toasted, but his polar expertise proved to be lacking. The ship he guided was no match for the South Pole's crushing cold and ice. Soon after arriving, the Endurance was stuck in ice, absolutely unable to move. The crew salvaged what it could and was forced to make do with dwindling supplies and provisions, eventually eating some of their beloved dogs.

I won't dampen your reading pleasure by giving away too much of the unfolding events, but through a combination of amazing resourcefulness, outstanding leadership, and ultimately incredible luck on the part of Shakleton, the whole crew survived without a single life lost. Naturally, there was an abundance of suffering along the way, but also an impressive amount of team spirit and toughness. The book is inspirational and a quiet page turner.

Please note, the "quiet page turner" part. Endurance is definitely an engrossing read, and once you get into it, you won't want to put it down. I found the book starts a bit on the slow side, at least for all its fanfare, but don't give up if you aren't immediately bowled over. You'll be justly rewarded if you stick with it.

Antarctica Mission Impossible

Action. Suspense. Mystery. Exploration. Leadership. Survival. Willpower. Hope. Perseverance. This is Endurance.

It's been a long time since I've read a book that I didn't want to put down. Almost every chapter presented an impossible treachery to escape but by some miracle the crew would survive. As each peril would arise I would foresee some crazy possibility and it would often turn out even crazier than I had imagined.

The book, as amazing as it is, left out some of my favorite parts of the story. For example, when Shackleton, Worsley and Crean were making their trek on Southern Georgia island, Shackleton recounted in his own book, 'South':

"I know that during that long and racking march of thirty-six hours over the unnamed mountains and glaciers of South Georgia it seemed to me often that we were four, not three. I said nothing to my companions on the point, but afterwards Worsley said to me, "Boss, I had a curious feeling on the march that there was another person with us." Crean confessed to the same idea. One feels "the dearth of human words, the roughness of mortal speech" in trying to describe things intangible, but a record of our journeys would be incomplete without a reference to a subject very near to our hearts."

Aptly named, this book does not disappoint!

I got the book because it was recommended reading for an Antarctica trip I am taking. I found it riveting and did not want to put it down. The hardships the expedition endured are well documented and I found it amazing that they were able to persevere. The book was aptly named.
It is also a study in leadership. Ernest Shackleton not only held his men together when it appeared likely they would all perish. Due to his leadership, vision, and courage, not a man was lost. The book does an outstanding job of pulling the reader into the story. Endurance is one of my all- time favorites.

Kristin Pfefferkorn has compiled a very useful collection of essays on the work of Novalis. This volume specializes in the philosopher/poet's theories of language, as well as his significance as a poet in early German Romanticism. Pfefferkorn provides particularly insightful analysis of Novalis' use of figurative language and the role of symbolism in his more hermetic works. Some of the discussion on the specific meaning and role of the Marchen is a bit dry, but still this is one of the more accomplished studies of Novalis in English.

A haunting book that beautifully illustrates human kinds need for "a place in the world. These city like grave sites are built by nomadic people who give their ancestors a place to finally stand still. The structures they build are works of art constructed by relatives of the dead who visit the sites as they pass by on their yearly treck through the isolated and beautiful landscape. Ms Morton's photos while black and white, are a palette of many grays and perfectly depict the bleached landscape of these remote regions. If there is such a thing as anthro/art book she has produced it.

Beautiful photographs about a fascinating subject.

Absolutely beautiful photographs about a fascinating subject but the texts by the three authors left me wanting to learn a lot more. The book would have benefited if descriptions, even brief ones, were included with the photographs in the book's corpus (as they were in the prologue). A brief history of Kyrgyzstan and the Kyrgyz people, or barring that a short bibliography or list of 'suggested readings', would also have been helpful.

St. Sukie de la Croix is an internationally published journalist, columnist, fiction author, playwright, and photographer. As a historian, de la Croix has published dozens of articles about Chicago’s gay history, scripted and acted as tour guide on the Chicago Neighborhood Tours’ gay history bus, and written a ten-week series on Chicago’s LGBT history for the Chicago Tribune.

Thoroughly researched, startlingly and strikingly revealing

This book is one of the best histories of place and of a unique, but diverse community. It reveals previously hidden details about Chicago, Illinois, and U. S. history, and it ties that history seamlessly to the ebb and flow our nation's literary, media, music, economic, legal and political stream. No other book has been written before that traces and ties to a broader social context the history of LGBTQ Chicago before the 1969 Stonewall Riots. Reading this history of LGBT Chicago will make gays and non-gays alike appreciate how far the gay community and our nation have changed for the better. It reveals how gays and lesbians went from an outsider group on the fringe and hidden in the shadows of society to a community centrally critical to current urban demographic and cultural trends and to our national political thought and concept of human rights and dignity. Reading this painstakingly documented book was a profoundly changing experience.

Must-Have Overview of Chicago's LGBT History

This book captured me from the first chapter by relying on the stories of the people that revolutionized Chicago's gay community. It's filled with so many great stories and little-known facts that the book is essential reading for locals and gay historians alike. For example, I found out that my office is right in the middle of what used to be the hub of gay prostitution in the 20s!! Really brings history alive in a personal and entertaining way. Buy it now!

The author examines the history as well as the complex philosophical, legal, sociological, and political ramifications of the English Language Amendment (pending in Congress) and its many predecessors. Although very fair in his analysis, the author makes clear his opposition to this amendment since social forces, not laws, determine our language. This book will be valuable for educators and specialists, but may prove too thorough for most other readers.

Important message, but the book feels like a broken record in the second half

Overall, the book was a pleasure to read, and the main message Walker wants to communicate to his audience is a worthy cause. Basically, in the pursuit of modernization/industrialization/empire-building, the Japanese state caused pain for some of its citizens and did harm to the environment. Walker presents several examples to illustrate that humans are always going to be affected by their natural environment, and any harm we do to that environment will hurt us in the long run. The point is well illustrated, but my problem with the book is that this point was made obvious with just the introduction and the first chapter. In other words, I think this work should have been condensed for an article, and the book felt repetitive after the first 100 pages or so. Walker does a nice job connecting local developments (human pain and environmental damage) to broader developments within Japan and its broader empire between the late 19th-20th century, but those connections are too obvious and require little explanation. For example, war required more resources, such as mining, and this increase in mining activities caused greater environmental damage, which caused more physical pain for inhabitants of local communities near these operations. There it is. I just don't think this requires an entire chapter to explain. The message is important, and this specific topic is not covered by many other scholars in the U.S., so the book is significant in that regard, but it felt like a broken record for most of the second half.

Worth a read

While Walker tends to hammer the point home, this is a pretty good read. I got this book for an environmental studies class, and I found myself enjoying it, well as much as I could with such a grim subject matter. I'm not really one who likes reading for class, but this was interesting enough to make me really think and not just skim through it like I do most books needed for class.
