Marble Queens and Captives: Women in Nineteenth-Century American Sculpture, by Professor Joy S. Kasson

When 19th century Americans looked at a statue of a nude woman in chains, or a shipwrecked mother and child, what did they see? The author argues that there was a connection between the popularity of artworks such as these, which derive from a sentimental literary culture, and the rapidly changing social, economic, and political environment that was beginning to raise questions about women's nature and role in society. By exploring the once-popular genre of ideal sculpture, with its focus on female subjects and its insistence on narrative content, Kasson is able to shed light on conventional assumptions about gender roles, as well as the tensions that lay behind these beliefs. Kasson reconstructs the intellectual, aesthetic, and literary contexts in which these sculptures were viewed and traces the social history of their production and reception. She shows that sculptors and audiences repeatedly idealized women as fragile, endangered, and vulnerable. Immoral or powerful women, such as Eve, Pandora, or Medea were presented in a web of sentimental narrative that hinted at moral redemption in order to reassure viewers that woman's true nature would remain domestic and maternal. Kasson looks closely at a number of sculptures that exemplified these themes - from Hiram Powers' "The Greek Slave" to works by the most prominent female sculptor of the period, Harriet Hosmer.

Morgenstern (1871-1914) was a German poet, theosophist, translator and writer of nonsense poems. Often compared with Carroll and Lear, he wrote his first "Galgenlieder" after an outing past Gallows Hill near Potsdon and formed his "fraternal order of the gallows". This book contains about 90 poems.

Get It for the Moonsheep
By Bruce P. Barten
Most of the poems in this book are bilingual, in German and English. The first poem is surprising because a Latin version by Morgenstern on page 4, explained by Walter Arndt as being "probably just for the amusement of the educated (now termed 'elitists')" perfectly expresses the attitude of those who would like this poem to those who would be totally clueless here. "Lunovis videt somnium . . ." I say no more.

Stephen F. Austin: The Person
By HisServant
Comments about the personal development of historical figures are sometimes ignored in favor a list of achievements. Cantrell includes details of how Moses Austin encouraged his son to be a big thinker. The Austin family's "can do" attitude is certainly reflected in in Stephen's life.

Life of Austin
By Bomojaz
This is the first biography of "The Founder of Texas" since Eugene Barker's magisterial work published in 1925. A wait of nearly 75 years for a modern follow-up is tolerable when the results are as good as this.

Austin was a complicated figure; much of his life played out in contradictions: born a Southerner, he was educated in the Northeast; an eloquent and persuasive spokesman in the public arena, he found it difficult expressing his emotions to those closest to him and never married; abhorring slavery, he fought for the right of slavery to exist in Texas; a cultivated man, he spent most of his life on the coarse and harsh frontier; he longed for peace and stability in his life, yet lived during extremely chaotic times; driven to "put his house in order," he claimed his only mission in life was "to redeem Texas from its wilderness state." His father inspired his son to dream big dreams and take on the challenges and responsibilities required to make them realities; when Moses Austin died before being able to colonize the 200,000 acres he acquired in Texas, he left it to Stephen to accomplish. And he did. Austin was not perfect and made mistakes (and enemies); possibly his biggest mistake was going to Washington to petition recognition for Texas at the time that the Alamo fell and, even more importantly, when Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna at San Jacinto six weeks later. Recognizing the significance of that victory not only for Texas but for himself, he hastened to Texas from Washington as quickly as possible. He lost the presidency of the Republic to Houston. A sickly man most of his life, he died of fever in December 1836, only six months after his return.

Gregg Cantrell's biography is a pleasure to read. Informative and compelling, it's a "Life" of Austin and not a "Life and Times." He captured my interest right from the beginning; not hesitant to indicate Austin's shortcomings, he also obviously respects the man. It's a solid, well written biography of an important figure in Texas (and American) history. Highly recommended.

Excellent!
By Randell G. Tarin
Gregg Cantrell has tackled a sacred cow and come out unscathed. His new book, Stephen F. Austin, Empresario of Texas is a meticulously researched and carefully written profile of a man we only thought we knew.
Our knowledge of Stephen Fuller Austin, is gleaned largely from the work of Eugene C. Barker. His 1925 tome, Life of Stephen F. Austin, painted this renowned figure as "The Father of Texas"...and rightly so. However, the Austin we see in Barker's work is a flat two-dimensional character lacking much of the humanity needed to explain the heroism behind the hero.
Though technically accurate, Barker provided little to help us understand the motivations behind Austin the man or of the dynamic forces that led to the making of a republic.
In Stephen F. Austin, Empresario of Texas. Gregg Cantrell brings to life the real Stephen F. Austin with all of his strengths and foibles. We learn in some depth how Austin was destined for greatness, a direct product of his father's influence. His father, Moses Austin, at one point was quite wealthy and wielded a powerful hand in creating his son in his own image. He wanted him to be a gentleman living in the world of high finance. Who Stephen F. Austin was and the way he thought all bear the mark of Moses Austin's influence.
When the younger Austin grew into manhood, his father put him in charge of various business ventures within the Austin empire. Stephen's training paid off as he showed himself to be adroit at business. Unfortunately, an economic depression and several bad business dealings (mostly initiated by the elder Austin), left the family buried in overwhelming debt.
By 1820, Moses Austin saw a possible way to get his head above financial water. He became the first Anglo to get permission to colonize Spanish Texas. Unfortunately, he died before realizing his goal. His deathbed request was that Stephen bring the colony to fruition. Under a sense of instilled familial loyalty very characteristic of the young Austin, he reluctantly abandoned his own course to obey his father's wishes.
When Mexican independence became a reality, Stephen F. Austin skillfully navigated through the waters of the diplomatic intricacies to which he had been thrust. He began to see that building his colony was a way to repay the enormous debts the family had accumulated and to restore a measure of honor to his father's name. He would make his fortune through land. He threw himself wholeheartedly into the work of colonizing Texas and it soon became clear that it was not just another business venture but a mission. This mission would eventually be to create an independent Texas by any means.
Austin earned the title "Father of Texas" by overseeing every aspect of the colony and the lives of those under his care. He became a fierce advocate for the rights of his colonists and worked tirelessly for many years (many times to his own detriment) to ensure the success of the colony.
His was not an easy task. The central government in Mexico was in a constant state of turmoil. Cantrell shows us that one of Austin's biggest strengths was his ability to forge alliances with the powers at the heart of Mexico and the Tejano elite of Texas. Men like Don Erasmo Seguín and Lorenzo de Zavala had the deepest respect for Stephen F. Austin and shared his vision of Texas. He even earned the respect of those who opposed him.
Throughout the book, Cantrell discusses Austin's struggle with his personal demons. All through his life, Austin was plagued with self-doubt and self-pity. He also experienced bouts of deep depression. His physical stature was not great and sometimes even frail due to chronic illness. What set Stephen F. Austin apart was that he pushed himself to the limits of human endurance and set his own interests aside many times for the good of others. Therein lies his heroism. He persisted when lesser men would have quit.
Our tendency with heroes is to deify them and negate their humanity. Cantrell pulls no punches in revealing the full human nature of Stephen F. Austin. It was surprising to this reader to learn Austin's attitudes toward blacks and toward Catholics. Though in theory, Austin opposed the institution of slavery, he himself owned slaves. He fought diligently for his colonists to keep their slaves and not to free slaves already living in Texas. He feared that if blacks were freed, their number would increase. His vision was for a Texas populated predominately by whites.
He looked upon Catholicism as gross 12th century ignorance, a yoke of oppression that retarded Mexico's progress into the 19th century. Austin seldom voiced these feelings except to a few close friends. It would not have faired well in his diplomatic relations.
Stephen F. Austin was indeed human. He wasn't perfect. He made mistakes; but until his death at age 43, he never faltered in his devotion to Texas.
Stephen F. Austin, Empresario of Texas brings a clear understanding of the events that led to the Texas Revolution. If you have ever wondered why there was an Alamo, Goliad or San Jacinto, then you should read this book.
The narrative is clear and well written and it held my attention from page one. I highly recommend this book.

The Gendering of Men, 1600–1750: Volume 2, Queer Articulations, by Thomas A. King

The queer man’s mode of embodiment—his gestural and vocal style, his posture and gait, his occupation of space—remembers a political history. To gesture with the elbow held close to the body, to affect a courtly lisp, or to set an arm akimbo with the hand turned back on the hip is to cite a history in which the sovereign body became the effeminate and sodomitical and, finally, the homosexual body. In Queer Articulations, Thomas A. King argues that the Anglo-American queer body publicizes a history of resistance to the gendered terms whereby liberal subjectivities were secured in early modern England.Arguing that queer agency preceded and enabled the formulation of queer subjectivities, Queer Articulations investigates theatricality and sodomy as performance practices foreclosed in the formation of gendered privacy and consequently available for resistant uses by male-bodied persons who have been positioned, or who have located themselves, outside the universalized public sphere of citizen-subjects. By defining queerness as the lack or failure of private pleasures, rather than an alternative pleasure or substance in its own right, eighteenth-century discourses reconfigured publicness as the mark of difference from the naturalized, private bodies of liberal subjects.Inviting a performance-centered, interdisciplinary approach to queer/male identities, King develops a model of queerness as processual activity, situated in time and place but irreducible to the individual subject's identifications, desires, and motivations.

Theo: An Autobiography, by Theodore Bikel

An award-winning actor on screen and stage (The Defiant Ones, The African Queen, The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof), an activist for civil rights and progressive causes worldwide, and a singer whose voice has won him great applause, Theodore Bikel here tells his own compelling life story. Born in Austria, raised in Palestine, educated in England, and with a stellar career in the United States and around the world, Bikel offers a personal history parallel to momentous events of the twentieth century. In an eloquent, fiercely committed voice, he writes of the Third Reich, the birth of the State of Israel, the McCarthy witch hunts of the 1950s, and the tumultuous 1960s in America. In a new postscript to this paperback edition, he looks at recent events in the Middle East and takes both sides to task for their excesses.

From Publishers Weekly
Noted film actor (The Defiant Ones), Broadway star (The Sound of Music) and folksinger Bikel documents his life, beginning in 1938, when he escaped with his family at age 13 from German-occupied Austria. He recalls his early days in the Hebrew Theatre in Palestine, his training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and his move to the U.S., where he continued his acting career and became intimately involved with folk music. Extremely versatile, he has performed in the theater, in films, on radio, on TV and in other venues. Bikel has led an active political life as well, and his narrative is interspersed with comments on his work for Democratic Party causes, the National Council on the Arts, the civil rights movement, the antiwar movement of the 1960s and on behalf of Soviet Jewry and other Jewish causes. Pride in accomplishment is understandable, but it's no excuse for an autobiography that is too long and at times tedious. Photos not seen by PW. Jewish Book Club alternate.

Review

"A compelling life, taking Bikel from pre–World War II Eastern Europe to an acting career in Israel; emigration to England after the war, training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, and initial success in British theater and film; a leap to the Broadway stage and stardom in The Sound of Music; productive years as a Hollywood character actor; a new career as a folksinger in the late1950s; then several decades of activism, as president of Actors’ Equity and a prominent figure in the civil rights and anti-Vietnam War movements."—Kirkus Reviews

"An engaging, well-written memoir . . . full of theater stories about playing Mitch opposite Vivien Leigh’s Blanche in the London production of A Streetcar Named Desire, playing Baron von Trapp opposite Mary Martin’s Maria in The Sound of Music, and of course his many performances as Tevye [in Fiddler on the Roof.]"—Oakland Tribune

"Bikel has been an articulate spokesman against oppression, dictatorship, inhumanity, war."—Boston Globe

From the Publisher
A man of many parts, the renowned folksinger, actor, and activist offers an autobiography as colorful, dramatic, and thoughtful as the life it describes.

This should be in every home library
By JL
I first discovered Theo when I was in college -- and a friend of mine found some folk music records of his at a campus record store.
Then I discovered he's an actor. And a writer. He's written some wonderful books on folk music, with the stories that go with the music. He wrote the back jacket copy for the records, and it opened gateways into the music and out of the music into the world that music came from.
He's appeared on almost all the major hit TV series. Most memorable for me is that he is/was Ivanova's Uncle on Babylon 5 and Worf's human father on Star Trek: DS9 etc.
You surely know who he is -- you've seen him again and again.
But only a true die-hard fan like me -- who goes to his concerts whenever I can -- picks up enough about his life history to get a feel for where this immense talent comes from.
Theo is one of the major influences that led me to become a professional sf writer. Today, I play his CD's and tapes made from the old vinyl in my car -- and it gives me the strength and energy to keep on. Keeping-on has begun to pay-off! Just today, I have another new title now available on amazon.[com], The Unity Trilogy.
The story of Theo's life is the story of Art. And here and there you get to peek into the world as it was during some terrible war times -- and what it meant to escape all that horror.
This is a book to treasure. It should be available as an ebook download forever!
Live Long and Prosper,
Jacqueline Lichtenberg

Theo Bike - A Renaissance Man
By Madeleine Charney-Wolk
Theodore Bikel's name is syynonymous with the Arts. His autobiography detailing his years on the London and Broadway stage and his Hollywood film career is stuffed with anecdotes about actors and legends. It brings a real sense of living that charmed life. I enjoyed every minute of his story.
His experiences escaping the Nazis as a child, his passion for folk music, and his stewardship of actors' and civil rights show him as a champion of the less fortunate and a righteous individual. This is the story of a totally expansive life and in spite of my earlier knowledge and enthusiasm for his work and music, I came away with greater insights and understanding of the man's drive and achievement. It's a great book. I recommend it to every theator-goer, activist, music lover, and any soon-to-be fan of Theo Bikel.

"A brilliantly innovative and provocative work of pathfinding dimensions."-Robert M. Ireland, Journal of the Early Republic "No scholar of the American constitution or American history can afford not to read this book-at least twice."-Herbert A. Johnson, Law and History Review "Kahn is clearly a scholar of great intelligence and creativity."-Scott D. Gerber, Journal of American History In this ground-breaking book, Kahn uses modern cultural theory to investigate America's most profound political myth: the belief that the rule of law is rule by the people. Kahn explores the elements of the myth, the rhetoric of law that sustains the myth, and the world of meaning the myth creates. He shows us that law must be central to religious, anthropological, and philosophical studies of American life.

Fascinating
By Matthew Smith
In this book the author takes the reader through the historical and philosophical beginnings of the Supreme Court and the rule of law in the U.S. He does this by discussing one of the most important legal decisions in the Supreme Court's history which is Marbury v. Madison. By focusing on this decision the author shows how it wrested the authority of the "people" from the other branches of government and made the the Supreme Court the sole arbiter of the "people's" will in the U.S. Until then the battle between the elected representatives and the court had not been solved, and this decision helped to decide whether this nation was to be one ruled by law or democracy.

With that said this book is not a critique of Marbury V. Madison, nor is it an historical look at the decision and its consequences, instead this book looks into the theoretical underpinnings of this decision and how it changed this nation's political future. The author goes into the battle being raged by those like Jefferson who believed the people should the supreme decision makers and that elections should determine whether the nation was on the right path and what changes should be made. This was true democracy where the U.S. could change course on dime with a single sweeping election. His was a government truly responsive to the people against the federalist's ideas of a nation ruled by laws and not men. There's was to be a nation of the rule of law which no one was above. A country set on an historical path in which the present and future would always have link with its revolutionary past. This country was to be a chain with each generation being another link in a chain that in one direction lead to the beginning (the Constitution) and the other direction moving foward into the future, but this is all done on the abstract and theoretical level.

The main focus of this book is how this decision created continuity in the law. The Constitution becomes the interpreter of the Revolution instead of each successive generation. For Madison and Jefferson the court had no standing since it was, for them, simply another political actor which had been defeated in the election. This decision decided that the meaning of the Revolution was the creation of the Constitution and the rule of law that entailed, and since we became a nation ruled by laws the Constitution became the original link in the chain that anchors each successive generation. If we are a nation ruled by laws then each decision must connect to the original intent. The Supreme Court cannot be seen as just another political actor, but must ground every decision in either the original contitution or on decisions that have created precedents that connect to the Constitution. If the court was to completely break with precedent then they would sever their link with the original understanding of the Revolution in which case the rule of law breaks down. If there is no connection in any Supreme Court's decision with precedents or the Constitution then the question becomes why does their opinion take precedent over the elected representatives of the people?

The court has such high regard in this country today due to the fact that it is seen as a whole to be an apolitical organization. While each judge may have political leanings, the people believe that their judges leave this at the door and rely soley on their expertise and knowledge of the law and precedents that came before them. While each judge may have their own proclivities, each understands the importance of grounding their decisions on the past and creating new ground which is not their prerogative.

Khan's gift, in every book of his I have read, is in his imaginative capacity and his ability to convey very abstract ideas in a way that is easily accessible. This does not mean his books are easy reads. They require a lot of focus and attention. The reader will get out of this book exactly what he or she is willing to put into it. Understand that this book is abstract and deep which requires a lot from the reader, so be prepared to put forth the effort it requires and you will be rewarded. I recommend this book.

Christianity and Classical Culture: The Metamorphosis of Natural Theology in the Christian Encounter with Hellenism (Gifford Lectures Serie

Subtitled `The metamorphosis of Natural Theology in the Christian Encounter with Hellenism' this book examines the theological thought of the `Cappadocians'; Gregory of Nazianus, Basil of Cesarea, Gregory of Nyssa and the shadowy Macrina, sister of the last two. Pelikan argues that the `accident' of the New Testament being first written in Greek determined much of the philosophical complexion it has since acquired, and that the fourth century historical figures discussed played a major part in uniting Classical and Christian traditions. The book is based on the 1992 and 1993 Gifford lectures delivered at the University of Aberdeen.

The Synthesis of Hellenism and Xpianity
By A Customer
Pelikan seeks to show, with great erudition, that the Cappadocians were able to synthesize Hellenic concepts, not all theological in origin, to meet the needs of their baptism of Greek thought into that of a more or less unified Christian vision. Emphasis is placed upon their use of apophatic theology (talking of God by saying what God is not- negation).

Really a useful book to dispel the myths that the theology of the Church, especially the Greek tradition, is, a al Harnak, a big squabble over an iota or a bunch of clap trap that disguises the gospel. Each culture appropriates the Gospel in a manner that makes it intelligible. Of course there will be some loose ends and need of trimming, but Pelikan expertly demonstrates the genius of these theologians in their synthetic abilities.

My other reviews of theological books may be of interest to you in this regard. See The Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church for another refutation of the "Hellenization of Christianity" thesis. Moreover, see Light from the Christian East: An Introduction to the Orthodox Tradition for more on how the Christian tradition asked new questions apart from the Hellenistic context, and used some Hellenic concepts in a modified form to answer and articulate a new worldview.

Enjoy!

diamond studded natural theology
By A Reader
as a person who in his heart of hearts hopes to one day be a Byzantine Catholic monk, i found this book to be both rich in information, and inspiring.
pelikan has long been my favorite historian of Christian theology. one of the great things about his work is his familiarity with the original texts: he is absolutely saturated in the writings of the fathers, and he can weave citations from their various works into his study in a manner similar to the way the old school fathers weave Scripture into their arguments.
i never new what the cappadocians were as far as natural theologians. before i read this book, they were my heroes as Christians; now they are my heroes as intellectuals as well. he compares the effect that the cappadocians had on the east with the effect that augustine had on the west; as a Catholic, i'm half jealous :-)
to me, the cappadocians serve as a model for just how good Christian theology can get. their writings are saturated in beauty; their theology is absolutely Trinitarian. they met their world head on and analyzed it in light of what Christianity could give. they combined an uncommon ability to both stand for the Orthodox and Catholic faith and to be vibrant and bold in their theology.
a bonus is pelikan's portraying macrina, the sister of basil and gregory of nyssa, as 'the fourth cappadocian' and a source of much that was great in her brothers.
i highly recommend this book. often, Christianity is accused of being 'paganized' from its encounter with hellenism. pelikan's study shows perhaps quite a different picutre: the Christianization of hellenism. at any rate, this wonderful book shows Christian theology at its best. i highly recommend it.

A Superb Volume
By KryptonGirl
This book includes: Dumuzi poems (including the lengthly and truly beautiful In The Desert Of The Early Grass); erotic lovesongs; hymns to Enlil, Inanna, the city of Kish, and the Nanshe Hymn; the story of Enlil and Ninlil; the Eridu Genesis; Inanna's Descent; the Lugal-e concerning Ninurta; the story of Enmerker and the lord of Aratta; the story of Lugalbanda and the anzu/imdugud bird; Gilgamesh and Agga; The Cursing of Akkad; The Cylinders of Gudea; the Lament for Ur; the 'birth of man' concerning a contest between Enki and Ninmah; Enki And Ninhursag; and two laments "the destroyed house" and "the verdict of Enlil." Jacobsen gives running footnote commentary throughout. Book has a nice weight paper.

Satisfying, trustworthy, & enjoyable.
By South Slope
What I was hoping for was translations that were slightly conservative, more concerned with accuracy than whether or not readers were on the edge of their seats. I wanted someone with a good handle on poetry, but not someone who used an ancient work as a springboard or departure point for their own jazzed-up, modern re-creations. (Worst case example: someone's translation of Gilgamesh describing a wave of water as "Manhattan-high." Are you kidding me?) Thus, I was delighted with Jacobsen's work. He describes his own attempts in this way: "The translations have been kept as literal, and held as close to the wording of the Sumerian original, as at all possible."
Other reviewers have listed what he includes, but let me point out what he does not, just as full disclosure. The book does not include debates, royal hymns, Edubba texts, proverbs and wisdom literature, fables such as "the sorcerer from Aratta," or Gilgamesh texts.
But before reading this book, I first recommend Samuel Noah Kramer's "Sumerians" or "History Begins at Sumer," as well as Marc Van De Mieroop's "History of the Ancient Near East." As a follow-up to "Harps" I suggest "Before the Muses" by Benjamin Foster, which picks up with Akkadian (Babylonian) literature where this book leaves off.
The poems in "The Harps That Once" can sometimes be quite lively. In the "Ninurta Myth," the winged warrior god and his intelligent, animated weapon (changes from a mace to a lion-headed eagle) do battle with a supernatural villain named Azag - a sort of giant cedar that walks on his roots - and his army of animated boulders.
That said, these archaic writings are fourteen centuries older than Homer, but if you have an especially short attention span, you're probably not reading these posts in the first place.
Enjoy!

An impressive collection of Sumerian literature
By Ray Farmer
As the oldest body of literature in the world, Sumerian poetry represents man's first adaptation of writing to express ideas and beliefs far more complex than the "highly structured" applications such as accounting for which writing was originally invented. Many people believe that the ideas and mythological figures present in Sumerian poetry are echoed in the later traditions of Ancient Greece, Ancient Israel, and even Christianity. Clearly then, any person interested in the history of Western literature would be doing themselves a great disservice by ignoring their Sumerian origins.

The book is divided into eight parts: (1) Dumuzi Texts, (2) Royal Lovesongs, (3) Hymns to Gods, (4) Myths, (5) Epics, (6) Admonitory History, (7) Hymns to Temples, and (8) Laments for Temples. Thorkild Jacobsen describes most of the Sumerian literary corpus as being works of praise, such as to a god, a king, or a dead relative. Instead of describing human feelings or ambitions, most of these works serve a ceremonial purpose or are explanations for why the world is the way it is. As a result, many of the poems in this book can be difficult to connect with, since they are taken out of context. Although written down on clay tablets, Jacobsen and others have suggested that Sumerian literature was meant to be narrated orally. As such, an element that is missing from our modern translation is the narrator's embellishment of the story through improvisation, voice intonation, and body language/facial expression.

Nevertheless, it is still possible to get a glimpse into the mindset of the ancient Mesopotamians by reading their literature. The ancient Mesopotamians considered themeselves to have been created by the gods for the express purpose of serving them hand and foot. Apart from this, they had no reason to be. I felt that much of the poetry found in Jacobsen's book represented the Sumerians' desire to maintain the status quo through praise of the gods, currying their favor, and begging for mercy.

"The Harps That Once..." is a fine anthology of Sumerian literature and I would heartily recommend the book to anyone interested in sampling the literature of ancient Mesopotamia. I would also recommend "The Epic of Gilgamesh" translated by Andrew George (2003) (ISBN 0140449191) since it contains five of the Sumerian Gilgamesh stories, which complement nicely the collection represented in Jacobsen's book.
