An excellent reference work for anyone having an interest in ancient slavery. The authors cut through a lot of the misconceptions of the institution, such as the number of slaves in Italy and the entire Roman empire and the manumission of the slaves. Among other things, they differentiate between a slave society and a slave economy. However it is a scholarly work and would be more useful to a researcher or student than to the average reader,

Michelangelo's renown as a sculptor and painter is well known, but the extent of his abilities as a poet is less familiar--though it is equally important in understanding his life and thought. Saslow has done a great service in providing a bilingual edition of Michelangelo's complete Rime , some 300 sonnets, madrigals, and other poems and fragments. Saslow does not try to capture the rhyme and ambiguous grammar of the original, aiming instead for clarity, and discussing textual difficulties and variant readings in his thorough notes. He also includes a lucid and balanced discussion of Michelangelo's life and art, especially his homosexuality, as well as the central themes and literary features of his poetry.

Words of the artist...

For many years, I belonged to a reading group who explored different angles of diversity in literature; Michelangelo's poetry was one of the books we used, as it gave us the opportunity to explore different aspects at the same time. How would someone whose creative genius in some media (painting, sculpture, architecture) made him an immortal in history translate onto the written page? Would Michelangelo's sexual orientation, always a topic of debate based upon various images in paint and stone, as well as personal stories and correspondence, be more observable, or more obscured by his poetry?
James Saslow presents a truly excellent volume of Michelangelo's poetry - 302 completed poems, and an appendix of 41 fragments (some as brief as one line), formatted in dual language, Italian and English. The translations are verse translations, rather than literal, word-for-word renderings, but the annotations are very detailed, so as to explore the nuances and meanings perhaps lost in the poetic translation.
Saslow begins with a brief introductory essay, exploring Michelangelo's relationship to his poetry - he was not widely published in his lifetime, but did have some poems circulated, and sought the critical analysis and advice of other respected literary figures of the day. Michelangelo's poetry was known well enough to become the subject of composition (Bartolommeo Tromboncino set one poem to music) and general reference (Benedetto Varchi, when lecturing on artistic theory, used Michelangelo's poetry as examples).
One thing Saslow has done is to restore the poems to their original form (insofar as is possible from the documentary evidence). Michelangelo's grand-nephew, in publishing the poems in 1623, changed phrases and pronouns to make the poems conform to standard conventions - men would not be writing love poems to men, etc., and this change continued into the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries unquestioned.
With regard to the quality of the poems, Saslow states that Michelangelo's literary output was `admired less for his style than for his ideas'. Even here, Michelangelo's ideas were fairly conventional, common among the educated literati, and rarely giving profound insight. Even so, his poetry was artful, technically interesting if not brilliant, and full of emotion as Michelangelo was known to be.
The poetry here is full of passion; the early ones full of the kind of love and passion of a young lover; the later ones looking for a spiritual value and perfection unattainable in this world even with the chisel or brush or Michelangelo. He incorporates a kind of Neoplatonic admiration of the ideal over the physical, and has a sort of pessimism even in the height of passion. He often looks upon the body as frail, fragile, a `temporary wrapper for the soul' - this contrasts dramatically against his visual art, particularly sculpture, where the powerful bodies (most often male) were Michelangelo's `signature'.
Michelangelo did not study Latin, so classical references are less here than more common contemporary influences. Saslow talks about the literary influences and ideas present in the poetry, the various editions the poetry has gone through, as well as the trials in the task of translation.
There are many magnificent lines and phrases here; I found my highlighter coming out numerous times throughout the poetry, and certain images remaining for a long time. This is interesting reading, all the more so given the other creations of Michelangelo - this book gives new insight into the mind of the great artist.

Another dimension of genius

Michaelangelo Buonarotti was (and still is) best known for his more tangible artistry. Namely, his sculptures (such as the David statue) and his paintings (such as the Sistine Chapel's ceiling). But poetry? Not a lot of people know he did that too.
In "The Poetry of Michaelangelo: An Annotated Translation," James M. Saslow offers a bilingual presentation of Michaelangelo's poetry, one Italian and one English. Sonnets, madrigals, and other poetic forms are used. And Michaelangelo's poetry is not the best technically -- some are kind of strained, and there are some grammatical errors. But they brim over with the kind of barely-restrained feeling that makes them come alive.
The poetry is heavily annotated, letting us know is the poem was written for someone (sometimes as an epitaph), influences, and the significance of the language used (since a lot of nuances could slip right by). But he doesn't just offer translations and footnotes. Saslow offers insights into Michaelangelo's musings on death, love and temptation, religion, and his own personal and artistic struggles.
Saslow does a solid job with the poetic translations, and explaining them to a modern audience. While Michaelangelo was a genius with stone and paint, he was pretty overwhelming with poetry as well.

The book helps place Michelangelo's poetry within the context of his other works and his life, including his spiritual life. Highly recommended.

About the Author

J. Robert Smith, long an enthusiastic gardener, has been associated with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for more than thirty years. He retired from his position as Administrator of Wildlife, Forestry, and Recreation in 1974. He and Beatrice have been operating Prairie Nursery for nine years, producing prairie seeds and plants commercially and conducting experimental research in this area.

Great book for collecting, cultivating and developing your own prairie garden

While this book is a little older (1980) the information is still good, valid, and hard to come by in many other sources. The Smith's are Department of Natural Resource employees who have developed a prairie garden on their own. This is the culmination of that experience. They treat of 75 different prairie plants, all well diagrammed, well described, seed collecting tricks, soil and companion plant preferences. There is a discussion of some of the deeper root systems. There are charts as to color and flowering time, sources for commercial buying (outdated by the years), suggestions on seed harvesting and handling. There is a chart on habitats of choice. There are color photographs of many of the plants. The book is divided into "forbs and shrubs, grasses, and one or tow sedges.

This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to grow native prairie plants in their own garden. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting a prairie garden. The practical hints and beyond pricing in their value.

Great book. Very helpful on how to grow 70 specific native plants and what to expect in all seasons. The book is a bit older. It is reflected in the quality of the color prints. However,l the book is well worth the money.

A collection of autobiographies written by young Polish Jews in the 1930s. The candid writings reveal not only the personal struggles, ambitions and dreams of 15 young authors, they also reveal with unprecedented intensity the nature of ordinary Jewish life in Poland in the years between the world wars. Unlike later writers for whom it became impossible to view this time except through lenses tinted by nostalgia or horror, these adolescent Jewish authors, unaware of the catastrophic future that awaited, tell their stories with a simple directness, describing their lives as they understood them at the time. The autobiographies presented in the volume are selected from hundreds that were written for contests in the 1930s sponsored by the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, then based in Vilna. Nine male and six female authors write from a variety of circumstances that reflect the great diversity of Jewish life in interwar Poland; some of the writers are ardently secular and others, devoutly religious; some are impoverished and others come from the working class or middle class; some are highly-educated and others, self-taught. They come from big cities, small towns, and villages, and they are affiliated with Zionists, Bundists, communists, multiple political groups, or none. Often surprising in their opinions and feelings, the young people also display different personalities, writing styles, and views of life. Their voices speak now across the chasm of history, providing a moving testament from the vantage point of young Jews in the final years before the Holocaust.

Heartbreaking, fascinating introduction to the modern Jewish experience

Awakening Lives consists of a dozen or so autobiographies written by Polish Jewish adolescents in the 1930s. These autobiographies, translated from Yiddish, Polish, and Hebrew, are not only extraordinarily moving but also offer an incomparably rich, kaleidoscopic point of entry into the life of Europe's largest, most creative, and most bewilderingly divided Jewish community prior to the Holocaust. Selected from several hundred such autobiographies written for contests in 1934, 1936, and 1939, the essays here capture Polish Jewry in all its variety. Some writers hailed from the wealthy, urbane Polish-Jewish bourgeoisie, while others were raised in the grindingly poor, often broken families which crowded the Jewish slums of Warsaw and Lodz or Poland's increasingly depressed small towns(shtetlelkh). Some were steeped in religious tradition (though many rebelled against it) while other grew up in families which had already embraced an idealized secular European modernity. At the same time, however, the essays reveal the shared predicaments and dilemmas which make this period of Polish Jewish history so fascinating and so important for understanding both the modern Jewish experience and the modern European experience as a whole. In an environment of rising anti-semitism, spiralling economic breakdown, and intensifying political conflict across Europe, the autobiographers grappled with the great political questions of the era and the proper response on the part of Jews, the nature of Jewish identity and culture, and the question of their own future (and whether, indeed, they had one). At the same time, they wrestled with tremendous candor with the intimate questions of selfhood, sexuality, and worldview common to modern childhood and adolescence. The fact that almost all of these writers would be killed in the years that followed will no doubt haunt many readers and, perhaps, discourage others; the frankness of these autobiographies may disturb those who idealize Jewish life in the old world. But I know of no more moving, gripping, or honest way of encountering the real, complex individuals who made up that world.

Historical treasure

This compilation of autobiographical essays written by teenagers from all walks of Polish life in the 1930s is a rare glimpse into an era which has been largely eclipsed by the Holocaust. While the prose is not always poetic, most are written with stark honesty. The lives of many were very hard, poverty was rampant and survival far from assured. Yet the main thing that struck me was that most of these essays were written by young men and women in the throes of adolescence, struggling to find themselves, to find love, to fulfill their dreams, whether that meant writing or teaching or going into business or going to Palestine. They show a variety of personalities and a cross sample of backgrounds, from fairly well-to-do to the most dismal poverty. Some had great fortitude and endless inventiveness, others were depressed and despondent.
I actually used this book for research for a novel I wrote. It is very difficult to get first hand accounts of the 1930s in Poland. The recollections of survivors are often colored by nostalgia or simply too painful to recount. But these were written contemporaneous with the events they describe, and so present a more accurate picture.
They are, however,difficult to read in the sense that these young people were unaware of what was to come--but the reader is. Most of these young, vital people, did not survive.

excellent. if you ever wondered how some of the jewish youth of Poland lived through their hardships between the two world wars, then this is the book to read. you have to try an imagine yourself in their position. being afraid of everything everyday. if you walked on the wrong side of the street you were punished. if you went to school you were punished. if you missed school you were punished. work didn't pay well at all. accommodation was almost non existent. living conditions were horrible. and through all that these youth managed to write biographies that will break your heart. poverty was the standard of living there. pogroms were a weekly happenings. police brutality was ignored, and at times was provoked. if you look for a book to make you think. this one is it. buy it!

This book offers an invaluable analysis of the ways in which plants and knowledge about them have been employed towards the expansion of the British empire. Amateur and later professional botanists associated with the Kew Botanical Gardens made relocating plants from one continent to the next possible through innovation and enhanced understanding of the plants' systems, taxonomy and ecology. This knowledge and related inventions for transporting plants made it possible for the British to grow rubber in SE Asia, tea in Ceylon, coffee in Latin America, sugar in Brazil, etc. This movement of plants around the world were further aided by the valuable discovery of quinine for curing fevers and malaria which meant that the cinchona tree from Peru and Bolivia facilitated the penetration of colonial empire further into the African and Asian continents. This book is carefully researched and beautifully narrated.

An excellent, eye-opening history

I stumbled across this book while doing research for a master's thesis that dealt with, of all things, the history of paleontology and the Peking man digs in China. I found it eye-opening and fascinating. Through showing the history of the British Royal Botanical Gardens, the author manages to teach a great deal about the rise of Europe and the West, Colonialism, science, agriculture and economic production throughout the British empire, and the world at large, up to modern times. Of special interest to me was the intertwining of science and economic exploitation in colonialized nations of the time. I consider this book remarkable in that it taught me more than if I had read five similar books.

Publication of this volume brings to conclusion the Yale Edition of the Complete Works of St. Thomas More, a thirty-year publishing project of landmark importance in the study of humanism in Western history. The volume contains More's earliest works, probably written between 1492 and 1522, including English poems, a translation and devotional adaptation of Giovanni Francesco Pico's life of his famous uncle Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, and a devotional prose work.
These texts together trace More's earliest career as a humanist through his transition to maturity as a defender of the faith.

The English poems (c. 1492-1494) are lively and experimental works, written at a time when English poetry was in its doldrums. This collection includes verses for a series of painted hangings in More's father's house, a lament for Queen Elizabeth, wife of Henry VII, traditional and sober Fortune verses, and a lively medieval comic poem, "A Merry Gest of a Sergeant and a Friar." The Life of Pico (c. 1510) is very likely More's earliest prose work and is his only extended translation of another writer's Latin into English. The translation is remarkable for its time, when sophisticated Latin was difficult to translate into more primitive English. The Last Things (c. 1522) is an incomplete prose work that re-creates the tradition of writing on death, judgment, hell, and heaven as objects of meditation.
With the publication of St. Thomas More: Selected Poems, edited by Elizabeth F. Rogers (1961), the Yale University Press rated two new editions of the works of St. Thomas More. One is a complete scholarly edition in fourteen volumes; the other a modernized version of selected works in seven volumes. St.Thomas More: Selected Letters is the first volume in the Selected Works; The History of King Richard III is Volume 2 in the Complete Works. These editions, to be published over a period of ten years, are designed to serve as standard reference works for many decades to come. Sponsored by the Yale University Department of English and the Yale University Library, these editions mark a new era in the study of Renaissance literature, history, and religion.
