This is a fascinating book, even if you're not a train buff.

This a beautiful and lavishly illustrated book on the
world's most beautiful train, written by the wife of its
owner. The Orient Express has been revived and this book
documents its repair and all the work that went into the
restoration as well as the current operation. The book is
wonderful, even if you are not a train buff. I recommend it
to anyone who has read _Murder on the Orient Express_ for
the train has been restored to the way it was in the 20s, or
to anyone with an interest in the golden age of rail travel.

After surveying Western ideas of reason from the ancient Greeks through Kant, Hegel, and Marx, Jay engages at length with the ways leading theorists of the Frankfurt School—Horkheimer, Marcuse, Adorno, and most extensively Habermas—sought to salvage a viable concept of reason after its apparent eclipse. They despaired, in particular, over the decay in the modern world of reason into mere instrumental rationality. When reason becomes a technical tool of calculation separated from the values and norms central to daily life, then choices become grounded not in careful thought but in emotion and will—a mode of thinking embraced by fascist movements in the twentieth century.
Is there a more robust idea of reason that can be defended as at once a philosophical concept, a ground of critique, and a norm for human emancipation? Jay explores at length the communicative rationality advocated by Habermas and considers the range of arguments, both pro and con, that have greeted his work.

Martin Jay is the Sidney Hellman Ehrman Professor of History at the University of California, Berkeley. Vallone (English, Texas A&M) analyzes novels and plays, including Pamela, Eveline, Alice in Wonderland, and Little Women, conduct manuals, religious tracts, and redemptive institutions for "fallen" girls to illustrate the character traits society found proper for adolescent girls in the 18th and 19th centuries. She contrasts these traits with those approved for boys in books like Tom Saywer and finds a significant disparity. Her analysis is convincing, but at times shifts of subject are too abrupt. Chapter 1 begins with a quote from a 16th-century sermon, but its pertinence is not explained for several paragraphs. Plot synopses of the less well known texts would also be helpful. Nevertheless, this is an interesting and well-documented study; recommended for academic libraries.

John Muir, America’s pioneer conservationist and father of the national park system, was a man of considerable literary talent. As he explored the wilderness of the western part of the United States for decades, he carried notebooks with him, narrating his wanderings, describing what he saw, and recording his scientific researches. This reprint of his journals, edited by Linnie Marsh Wolfe in 1938 and long out of print, offers an intimate picture of Muir and his activities during a long and productive period of his life.
    The sixty extant journals and numerous notes in this volume were written from 1867 to 1911. They start seven years after the time covered in The Story of My Boyhood and Youth, Muir’s uncompleted autobiography. The earlier journals capture the essence of the Sierra Nevada and Alaska landscapes. The changing appearance of the Sierras from Sequoia north and beyond the Yosemites enthralled Muir, and the first four years of the journals reveal his dominating concern with glacial action. The later notebooks reflect his changes over the years, showing a mellowing of spirit and a deep concern for human rights.
    Like all his writings, the journals concentrate on his observations in the wilderness. His devotion to his family, his many warm friendships, and his many-sided public life are hardly mentioned. Very little is said about the quarter-century battle for national parks and forest reserves. The notebooks record, in language fuller and freer than his more formal writings, the depth of his love and transcendental feeling for the wilderness. The rich heritage of his native Scotland and the unconscious music of the poetry of Burns, Milton, and the King James Bible permeate the language of his poetic fancy.
    In his later life, Muir attempted to sort out these journals and, at the request of friends, published a few extracts. A year after his death in 1914, his literary executor and biographer, William Frederick Badè, also published episodes from the journals. Linnie Marsh Wolfe set out to salvage the best of his writings still left unpublished in 1938 and has thus added to our understanding of the life and thought of a complex and fascinating American figure.

About the Author
Linnie Marsh Wolfe (1881-1945) worked as both a teacher and a public librarian in California. Her twenty-two year devotion to the life and works of John Muir resulted also in the publication of Son of the Wilderness, which was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1946.

A Rare Read!

Having hiked and climbed in upper Yosemite during summers in my high school years, I could readily identify with Muir's journals describing his ramblings. These journals are "epic," reaching from his first encounter as a shepherd to his rambling years in Yosemite, to his Alaska trips, and his political endeavors. John Muir kept a journal entry book tied to his belt, or would jot on paper meant to start a fire with. Linnie Marsh Wolfe's editing of untold myriads of Muir's notes is itself amazing.
However, it is Muir's most wonderful descriptions of his surroundings that I greatly enjoyed. Clearly, he was an exceptional botonist, describing plant life eloquently, with specific names, often with the Latin derivative. His glacier studies and descriptions of Yosemite and Alaskan glaciers shows rare knowledge and insight into their place in natural history.
Perhaps most enjoyable was Muir's very alive and often poetic descriptions. His word pictures literally make the most inert objects in nature come to life. I found myself often rereading a description, soaking it up as if it fed my soul. Muir's deep sense of man's place in this natural world and his purpose in its preservation is also rare.
These journals could easily be used in a creative or descriptive writing class at the college level. Most of all, they are rare reading that can awaken your ability to observe your surroundings and greatly heighten your passion for this natural world.

Love This Book - Stands Above the Other Books John Muir wrote - IMHO

LOVE this book. I know I may be a bit "biased" (since my last name is Muir, too), grin, but I LOVE this book. I got this book awhile ago now and am still picking it up every so often to get more spiritual encouragement. I have read probably just about every book that John Muir wrote ... and love them, too, but ... this one stands out. This book includes some of his "formative/foundational" thinking for his other books, as well as many other thoughts/writings/scribblings that never made it into any of his other writings. I love the outdoors, poetry, and the Bible and he seems to have included all of these, plus so much more, in this book. Linnie Marsh Wolfe has done a really good job of putting this one together. It had to be a task to try to arrange it al chronologically, since so many "scraps & pieces" were un-dated. Fine job.

Members of a pseudonymous Nicaraguan family here talk about their lives, beginning with accounts of the late Somoza years through the triumph of the 1979 revolution, and ending in 1987. The family consists of elderly Dona Maria Lopez, essentially apolitical but sympathetic to her children's political passions; her daughter Leticia, a Sandinista collaborator and the most articulate, least ingenuous subject; and Leticia's half-sister and half-brother, Marta and Omar, active in the revolution, now employed in Sandinista agencies. Amid occasional squabbling and political grandstanding, a compelling human panorama emerges, and one of tragic dimensions, as family members come to realize the fragility of the revolutionary culture that matters so deeply to them. Hart, a language instructor at Oregon State University who spent 1983 to 1987 meeting with her subjects, makes no claim to objectivity, yet her portrayal conveys great force and her subjects' eloquence.

An Interesting and Enlightening Experience

Ms. Hart's book is an interesting and enlightening account of the daily struggles of a Nicaraguan family. Their personal struggles and the horrible political situation strengthened their devotion to each other and their country.
A strong faith in God and family committment helped each member survive and thrive inspite of adversity.
The reader gains understanding of the political and social conditions in Nicaragua. Each family member shares their feelings and struggle.

Readers new to California-born Chávez-Silverman's unapologetic and bold back-and-forth between English and Spanish may at first be unable to classify what they are reading. This is a memoir of place, as Chávez-Silverman recounts feeling isolated and alone in Johannesburg, at home in Los Angeles and as if she is searching in Buenos Aires. Killer Cronicas

Clever, sassy, intelligent, poetic... continual code-switching is a wonderful vehicle to convey the sensations and experiences of a multi-cultural life. Her poetry invokes the intimacy I often feel when back in a long-lost land. Her quick wit and carefully-chosen details chronical well the feelings of isolation and observer-looking-in that seem to dog me wherever I land.

Killer Crónicas asks the following questions, among others:

* How might the experience of being at once inside and outside be specific to pan-Latin and Jewish post-holocaust cultural identity, without regard to location?

* How to develop a language limited enough to connote specific geopolitical contexts, yet broad enough to denote the simultaneity in memory of related circumstances separated by distance and time?

Killer Crónicas draws from multiple genres, such as the literature of travel in Spanish (cartas de exploración, of discovery) and in English (here, the Anglo-American category of life-writing, which includes biography, autobiography, and letters, is helpful.) Particulary original is the sustained and studied attention to the traveler's status as a consumer. Underlying the internationalism and bilingualism of Chávez-Silverman's accomplishment is a creativity comparable to Latino performance artists such as Coco Fusco (author of English is Broken Here) Guillermo Gómez-Peña, or code-switching poets such as Tino Villanueva.

I personally find Gloria Anzaldua's work almost unreadable (there's no rhyme, reason, or inventiveness) while I think that Cherrie Moraga is good for her work's characters and dynamic. In Killer Crónicas what's original is how the writer focuses attention on the relation between what we say and how we say it in one or both languages, showing how the mind moves at the moment of the "switch." This work demonstrates a mode of thought familiar to those of us who work in multiple cultural locations, reproducing the habit of thinking in multiple languages. This challenges the hegemonic attitudes about what constitutes linguistic propriety in either Spanish or English by pointing up the complexities of both languages. Also the mixture of languages legitimates a practice that is very widespread: the INVENTIVE use of multiple languages, registers. Read this very contemporary, brilliant book for the puns, for the writer's inspired, faux, alternative, and refused translations. Killer Crónicas is steeped in multiple literary traditions: Argentine, CalifAtzlan, On the Road-Trippers, but most of that incomparable Spanish-language genre that is so definitive in the New World: the Crónica. so dream like. (I would like to see an art film ...

This is Kandinsky's effort at writing poetry, but don't expect to find it written in a standard style or form. It is my understanding that the original was published in German. This is a translated English version. Kandinsky is known as a German Expressionist painter, but these pieces of small written poems border on being works of Surrealism, if not outright so. The stories seem nonsensical, because they are, at times, so dream like. (I would like to see an art film made of each of these small scenarios.) Unfortunately, the color woodblock prints are printed in black and white. I think I once read that the original version of this book was also printed in Russian and had the prints in different locations than the German version. If that is true, then the prints may have been placed in the book to stand on their own and not to serve as illustrations for the written works. Most of the prints are and were apparently originally printed in black and white. The ones in color stand out because they are composed of multiple grays. I am pleased to own this book after seeing and checking out the hardback copy owned by the library at the University of Tennessee (Knoxville campus) many times.

A Rare and Wonderful Soundscape

There are and have been, of course, other poets who pay a heavy devotion to the aural aspects of their work in sacrifice of a literarily traceable constructed set of metaphor and message. Cummings comes immediately to mind. However, to my knowledge (and please write me if you can add any) there are none that create such a level of intrigue and pleasure so simply with such mundane tools. Here Kandinsky shows us the incredible wealth of metaphor and depth in the utterly everyday. To so deftly focus our interest on small phrases, a "hello," a "goodbye," is very difficult to achieve without appearing melodramatic and obvious. These are simple poems for thoughtful people. (As opposed, I suppose, to thoughtless poems for simpletons?)

wonderful surrealist images for the eyes and the mind

I really enjoyed this book. The book presents woodblock prints accompanied by English translations of poems originally written in German. The German originals are presented in the back. The wonderful musicality of the poems, as well as some of the original sense of the imagery is lost a bit in the English translation (inevitable, I suppose), but you still get the point. I recommend that you read them aloud. Even if you don't understand German, have a look at the German text to get a feel for the rhythm. Don't worry what the poems are "about". They're not "about" anything. Kandinsky is painting wonderful surrealist images in your mind. As with the prints, it's up to you to interact with them. Some of the prints were apparently in color, and it would be nice to have them presented that way.

Fall From An Eminence?

I'm writing this review in advance of receiving this book, but I read a library copy a number of years ago and recall that it seemed a very good biography.

It's amazing how Goethe went from being considered one of the greatest literary genuises by Carlyle and George Eliot, themselves geniuses (and Eliot still considered so by many, including me) to a position where he's considered virtually unreadable by the modern literate person.
Daunty, Gouty, and Shopkeeper, a Joyce put it, are no longer a trio of equals.

It's an interesting, and almost singular, example of the loss of literary standing. To which other writers has it happened? I can't think of any, unless you think Spenser or Milton are on the same level, which I don't accept.

Nietzsche, still a cynosure of interest, considered Goethe a kind of Ubermensch, and Thomas Mann counted him as a unique influence, to the degree that he wrote a novel (LOTTE IN WEIMAR) that's a fictional portrait of Goethe.

Maybe you have to be German or at least read German (as Carlyle and Eliot did) to appreciate this former giant of letters?

A better artist can look at an old woman and see the pretty girl that she used to be. But a great artist-a master-and that is what Auguste Rodin was-can look at an old woman, protray her exactly as she is...and force the viewer to see the pretty girl she used to be...and more than that, he can make anyone with the sensitivity of an armadillo, or even you, see that this lovely young girl is still alive, not old and ugly at all, but simply prisoned inside her ruined body. He can make you feel the quiet, endless tragedy that there was never a girl born who ever grew older than eighteen in her heart...no matter what the merciless hours have done to her. Look at her, Ben. Growing old doesn't matter to you and me; we were never meant to be admired-but it does to them."
