The Trials of Oscar Wilde: Deviance, Morality, and Late-Victorian Society, by Michael S. Foldy

Following Oscar Wilde's 1895 trials for committing "acts of gross indecency with men," he lost his freedom, his family, his reputation, his will to create, and even his will to live. This book sets out to examine what it was about late-Victorian society that allowed this to happen, indeed needed it to happen, and what the trials tell us about the taste and morals of late-Victorian England.

Review
One hundred years after his death, Oscar Wilde reigns on stage and screen. The bizarre success of Gross Indecency--a clunky, unimaginative theatrical reenactment of Wilde's "sodomy trials," portraying the complicated Wilde as a sort of wounded Felix Unger--and the forthcoming movie starring Stephen Fry attest to a sudden interest in Wilde as character. And character he was: leader of the fin-de-siècle Aestheticist movement, flamboyant dresser, wonderfully witty talker, Wilde--a clever but never "great" playwright/novelist/poet/essayist--was essentially famous for being famous, and for being homosexual in an age during which Britain was deciding what sexual deviance meant and whether to punish it. In The Trials of Oscar Wilde: Deviance, Morality And Late Victorian Society historian Michael S. Foldy advances a theory: Wilde, who was imprisoned for "indecent acts" with men, served as whipping-boy for larger societal anxieties over "moral health"--and as scapegoat for the crimes of Lord Rosebery, the homosexual Prime Minister. While several books already interpret Wilde's trial as a social mirror, Foldy manages to unearth interesting aspects of the case, and the Rosebery angle is intriguing. Wilde fans would do well to skip the play and check out the trial transcripts and Foldy's analysis instead.

The Yale Edition of The Complete Works of St. Thomas More: Volume 1, English Poems, Life of Pico, The Last Things, by St. Thomas More

Publication of this volume brings to conclusion the Yale Edition of the Complete Works of St. Thomas More, a thirty-year publishing project of landmark importance in the study of humanism in Western history. The volume contains More's earliest works, probably written between 1492 and 1522, including English poems, a translation and devotional adaptation of Giovanni Francesco Pico's life of his famous uncle Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, and a devotional prose work.
These texts together trace More's earliest career as a humanist through his transition to maturity as a defender of the faith.

The English poems (c. 1492-1494) are lively and experimental works, written at a time when English poetry was in its doldrums. This collection includes verses for a series of painted hangings in More's father's house, a lament for Queen Elizabeth, wife of Henry VII, traditional and sober Fortune verses, and a lively medieval comic poem, "A Merry Gest of a Sergeant and a Friar." The Life of Pico (c. 1510) is very likely More's earliest prose work and is his only extended translation of another writer's Latin into English. The translation is remarkable for its time, when sophisticated Latin was difficult to translate into more primitive English. The Last Things (c. 1522) is an incomplete prose work that re-creates the tradition of writing on death, judgment, hell, and heaven as objects of meditation.
With the publication of St. Thomas More: Selected Poems, edited by Elizabeth F. Rogers (1961), the Yale University Press rated two new editions of the works of St. Thomas More. One is a complete scholarly edition in fourteen volumes; the other a modernized version of selected works in seven volumes. St.Thomas More: Selected Letters is the first volume in the Selected Works; The History of King Richard III is Volume 2 in the Complete Works. These editions, to be published over a period of ten years, are designed to serve as standard reference works for many decades to come. Sponsored by the Yale University Department of English and the Yale University Library, these editions mark a new era in the study of Renaissance literature, history, and religion.

Selected Epigrams (Wisconsin Studies in Classics), by Martial

This lively translation accurately captures the wit and uncensored bawdiness of the epigrams of Martial, who satirized Roman society, both high and low, in the first century CE. His pithy little poems amuse, but also offer vivid insight into the world of patrons and clients, doctors and lawyers, prostitutes, slaves, and social climbers in ancient Rome. The selections cover nearly a third of Martial's 1,500 or so epigrams, augmented by an introduction by historian Marc Kleijwegt and informative notes on literary allusion and wordplay by translator Susan McLean.

Review
"The Roman satirist Martial hasn't had a good deal hitherto from his translators. An older generation suppressed his hilarious obscenities, while today it's his racism, sexism, class prejudice, and callousness towards the ugly, deformed, or slaves (no poet was ever less P.C. than Martial) that cause offense. Now Susan McLean, a witty and metrically skillful poet in her own right, has seen her opportunity in Martial. Her rhymed quatrains are as sharp and pointed as Martial's own elegiacs; the Roman's insults and obscenities are preserved with style and relish. Martial has at last found a translator who not only possesses all the disparate skills needed for the job, but has clearly enjoyed herself hugely while doing it."—Peter Green, translator of Juvenal's Satires

“But you know who I recently learned makes me laugh as hard as anyone in print? Martial, the ancient Roman poet and satirist—an actual 2,000-year-old man and still funny! . . . I had never read Martial until I picked up his Selected Epigrams in a new edition with delightfully snarky translations by Susan McLean, a poet herself. . . . [Martial] would have been great on Twitter, and rappers might well appreciate his flair for the corrosive put-down.”—Bruce Handy, New York Times Book Review

“A neatly chosen, crisply rhymed selection of [Martial’s] most pungent sallies; perfect bedtime reading.”—Books of the Year, Times Literary Supplement

Therefore it was a delight to read this book
By Gil Ewing
Having learned Latin in high school long ago, through an experimental program that leaned heavily on pithy proverbs and catty comments by the ancient Romans, I was familiar with Martial and many of his epigrams. Therefore it was a delight to read this book. The high school Latin left out all of the bawdy epigrams, so reading these produced surprises.
Much would be lost in any translation of Martial into English, but McLean does an admirable job. Even so, McLean's footnotes were instrumental in understanding the meanings of these epigrams, and no epigram should be read without leafing back to the corresponding footnote. Much is learned about life in ancient Rome, more than anyone might expect.

A compilation of Martial's views on his compatriots and, to a lesser extent, on Roman society of his era. Gossipy, bawdy, sometimes fawning.

From Kirkus Reviews
The memoir of a young physicist, coming of age in Hitler's Germany, who was part of a secret experimental base that developed the V-2, the world's first large rocket-powered missile, under the direction of Wernher von Braun. Wegener, professor emeritus of engineering and applied science at Yale, whose specialty was wind-tunnel research, gives us valuable and candid insights into the pioneer German rocket program. Hitler hoped that the secret operation would provide wonder weapons to insure victory; instead, the technical information developed by the program helped the US to eventually put a man on the moon. Wegener is aware of his good fortune in being transferred from combat duty in Russia, in having had a technical education, and in having been trained by leading scientists whose recommendations paved the way for him to be part of this exotic program. The author believes that Allied spies discovered the secret base, since a heavy British bombing raid caused much destruction but missed the wind tunnels. The program was quickly moved to the quiet Bavarian mountains and installed in manmade caves. Wegener, a secret anti-Nazi, writes that few of these German scientists were Nazis; most had a passion for science and little interest in the practical outcome of their lethal work. He fails to dwell on the deadly effects of the V-2 rockets on the civilian population of London but does note the plight of the concentration camp prisoners forced to work on the assembly line. Wegener describes the last days of the war in Germany and the mad scramble to escape the Soviets, who were determined to capture scientists, precious equipment, and valuable documents. Eventually the von Braun team was invited to emigrate to the US, where it helped to develop the space program. A rare, absorbing study of one man's experiences during a dark and tragic time. Living in Germany during the war
By Paul T. Wegener
A war, a good story, and well-written without indulgence, this book is worth the read. My father Peter Wegener lived through the last world war on the German side, caught in a maelstrom not of his making. A young man cannot judge the situation, but has to make the best of it, and this memoir captures this human and ordinary situation. Intelligent and bewildered, he watches and remembers, and then tells the story here.

The story unfolds in chronological order and is mostly his own narrative. However, he spent several years investigating archives and interviewing other participants to shed light on what was happening, so everything is in perspective. Famous participants of the drama include Werner von Braun and various scientists and generals. The book is also a unique historical record of the German scientific project to create new weapons.

Self-preservation was everyone's motive in this strange time. Totalitarian means constant fear, stories of betrayal, and yet all these stories are intensely human. He does not indulge in lectures or morals, but simply relates how it all unfolded. Driving a tired Opel through the country to gather a research archive, he visits the Mittelwerk, the underground factory where the V2 was built with slave labor. Despite total destruction all around, everyone acts normal on the surface, and nothing happens, but the situation seethes. As the war finally closes in, he runs into the street to greet the first American officer to tell him not to destroy the laboratory. This laboratory became a starting point for the post-war space effort in the US.

Enjoy!

A Fascinating Account of Germany's Wind Tunnels During WWII
By Keith Bukovich
First, I want to say I am in agreement with the prior review written by the author's son and those contained in Amazon's listing for this book. Still, I would like to give my impressions of this fascinating book written by a highly qualified individual who was on the scene during and after World War II.

THE PEENEMUNDE WIND TUNNELS is an account of author Peter Wegener's experiences during the last half of World War II and the years shortly afterwards. Mr. Wegener had been a German anti-aircraft gunner in the Wehrmacht during the campaigns against France and Russia but not in the historic battle for Stalingrad. It was at this point that he was transferred to the Peenemunde Research & Development facility which the author believed probably saved his life. While at Peenemunde, Wegener worked on experimental research and development of supersonic flow in support of the design of the famous V2 rocket and the never used Wasserfall anti-aircraft missile. Peter Wegener was a highly skilled engineer/scientist in a field known as gas dynamics.

I found this book to be a very personal account of the events that took place in the author's life during the war years and his time in the United States after the war ended. However, it is still an objective book written mostly on official documents plus the author's own personal dairy. Those with an academic interest will find this book has both a solid chronology of events concerning the Peenemunde wind tunnels as well as detailed notes and background information on related topics.
I was also pleased with the various illustrations which consisted largely of technical and historical photographs.

The wind tunnels themselves were build at Peenemunde, in the eastern part of Germany, beginning around 1939 and were technically very advanced. The wind tunnels were moved after the serious air raid of August 1943 to Kochel, Bavaria.
(The wind tunnels and the Aerodynamics Institute that housed them were amazingly unharmed by the air raid.) At the time, these wind tunnels were the largest (400mm x 400 mm cross section) and the highest Mach number (up to almost 9) facilities in existence.

In regards to his discussion of technical matters, Wegener concentrates mainly on aerodynamics and wind-tunnel technology but I found the book not to be overly detailed since its presentation is aimed more for the general reader/layman as opposed to scientists and engineers. As an example, the coupling of the huge V2 motor to the controls was a problem that took many test flights to straighten out but it was only touched on lightly in the book.

After the capture of the wind tunnels and their shipment to the United States at the end of the war, Wegener found himself as one of the German scientists moved to America under Project Paperclip. This phase of his life, as seen by one who actually participated in the U.S. government project, made for interesting reading. To his credit, Wegener here and elsewhere in his book, compares his perceptions and judgments with others especially as it touches upon the various personalities at Peenemunde. These include Dr. Wernher von Braun and General Walter Dornberger, the respective heads of the civilian and military operations at Peenemunde, Rudolf Herrmann, head of the Aerodynamics Institute, and the notorious Arthur Rudolph who, after the August 1943 air raid, moved with the V2 factory from Peenemunde to the Mittelwerk in central Germany, a mine that was converted to an underground factory in which prisoners from the concentration camp Dora were forced to build the weapons under appalling conditions.

Wegener in his book rates the application of rockets to warfare as one of the three most important developments in military strategy during World War II (the other two being the atomic bomb and radar). While I personally agree with Wegener's assertion, I think most historians and military thinkers today feel that the deployment of the V2 was far less effective that the A-bomb or radar (while acknowledging that the V2 had a significant influence on post-World War II developments in both the United States and the Soviet Union). I believe it was Homer J. Stewart, an American rocket researcher during the period between 1938 and 1949, who pointed out that the impact of the German developments on the U.S. missile and space program was not so much technological (except for the use of large engines) as psychological: the V2 had shown the feasibility, and thus the immediate utility, of guided missiles in war.

Wegener's book gives the reader many lasting impressions. First, there is the fact that German science and technology in several areas was quite impressive -- the wind tunnels themselves were the most advanced of their kind at the time. The men like Wegener who worked on such projects were far more interested in science and engineering than in any Nazi ideology. Having said that however, another lasting impression from reading the book, which Wegener does not hide or gloss over, is the ghastly statistic that significantly more people died as a result of the inhumane conditions under which prisoners were forced to build V2s than through the weapon's deployment and use in the war.

With this book, the late Peter Wegener (who became an American citizen in 1954 and joined the faculty of Yale University as a professor in 1960) has given us a valuable and well-written narrative, complete with an excellent set of academic notes and comments, concerning a period of great scientific and historical interest for the United States. As such, I consider this book to be an important addition to the literature on the development of the V2 rocket and it subsequent affects in various other areas both in the U.S. and elsewhere. I recommend Wegener's book to all readers from a variety of backgrounds -- it is a book of genuine interest and value.

This book is a must read for Aerospace Engineers and WWII enthusiasts.
By Robert J. Leiweke
The author describes details of the beginnings of supersonic and hypersonic research and facilities that are not easily found in one resource. Also, the first person I have heard or read that testifies that von Braun was NOT a Nazi....based on first person friendship with him. Also a great perspective on the war from the German side.

Secrets of the Sacred: Empowering Buddhist Images in Clear, in Code, and in Cache (Franklin D. Murphy Lecture Series), by Helmut Brinker

Secrets of the Sacred illuminates the role of icons and relics in Buddhist writing and practice, with particular attention to the transformation of inanimate material images into potent icons animated by the divine. The earliest canonical scriptures indicate that images of the Buddha were created before the concept of transcendental identity was developed. Later writings reveal a connectedness between image and deity, and eventually art transformed into a means of creating a receptive environment for communication with the divine power and attaining wisdom. Icons became the perceivable bodies of the divine.

Esoteric practices within Buddhism trace back at least as far as the first century CE but did not develop into a religio-philosophic movement until after the fifth century. They relied on “mysteries” handed down from teacher to pupil. Sacred texts provided clear descriptions of the qualities and appearance of the Esoteric pantheon, but were so elaborate that they challenged the imagination and skill of Buddhist artists. Brinker traces the original meaning and function of individual icons and relics across the various schools of Buddhism. He discusses their origin, style, meaning, and individual histories. Beautiful illustrations complement the histories of these important icons and relics.

Sisters of the Brush: Women`s Artistic Culture in Late Nineteenth-Century Paris, by Tamar Garb

The Union of Women Painters and Sculptors was founded in Paris in 1881 to represent the interests of women artists and to facilitate the exhibition of their work. This lively and informative book traces the history of the first fifteen years of the organisation and places it in the contexts of the Paris art world and the development of feminism in the late nineteenth century. Tamar Garb explores how the Union campaigned to have women artists written about in the press and admitted to the Salon jury and into the prestigious Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and describes how the organisation's leaders took their campaigns into the French parliament itself. Although the women of the Union were often quite conservative politically, socially, and stylistically, says Garb, they believed that women had a special gift that would enhance France's cultural reputation and maintain the uplifting moral-cultural position that seemed in jeopardy at the turn of the century. Focusing on the developments that made the prominence of the organisation possible, Garb discusses the growth of the women's movement, educational reforms, institutional changes in the art world, and critical debates and contemporary scientific thought. She examines contemporary perceptions of both art and femininity, showing how the understanding of one affected the image of the other. This book reverses conventional accounts of late nineteenth-century French art, offering a new picture of the Paris art world from the point of view of a group of women who were marginalised by its dominant institutions. Tamar Garb is Lecturer in the History of Art at University College, London. She is the author of 'Women Impressionists' (1986), 'Berthe Morisot' (with K. Adler, 1987) and editor of 'The Correspondence of Berthe Morisot' (with K. Adler, 1986). Her most recent work includes 'Modernity and Modernism: French Painting in the Nineteenth Century' (with F. Frascina, N. Blacke, B. Fer and C. Harrison, 1993).

From Library Journal
Garb here transforms her historically self-conscious feminist contextualizing dissertation "Soeurs de pinceaux": The Formation of a Separate Women's Art World in Paris, 1881-1897 (The Courtauld Institute of Art, London) into a more popular but still rigorous book for nonspecialist audiences. (Two chapters of the argument were published as journal articles in 1989.) Garb documents the surprising conservatism of the leadership, goals, and campaigns of the Union des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs, which successfully led women into the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1897. Much of her analysis necessarily centers on politics and the ideological engendering called l'art feminin. Despite her insights, Garb's contributions remain secondary to Charlotte Yeldham's towering study Woman Artists in Nineteenth-Century France and England: Their Art Education (Garland, 1984). Recommended for informed readers.

About the Author
Tamar Garb is Durning Lawrence Professor in the History of Art, and head of the History of Art History department at University College London. She has written widely on portraiture and the body in nineteenth century art and visual culture, on contemporary art and on issues of race and representation. Key publications include Bodies of Modernity: Figure and Flesh in Fin de Siecle France (1994) and The Painted Face: Portraits of Women in France 1814 - 1914 (2007). She was curator in 2008 of the exhibition Land Marks/ Home Lands: Contemporary Art from South Africa at the Haunch of Venison Gallery and of Gauguin: Maker of Myth at Tate Modern (2010) and The National Gallery of Art, Washington.

excellent book on 19th century intitutional history
By Kristin N. Cooley
Garb does an excellent job of placing art produced by female artists within the context of the institutional history of the Union des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs. She explains how this organization relates to the work women artists produced and that the Union provided a much needed exhibition venue for women artists. Especially interesting is Garb's work on female nudes that women exhibited in the Salon des Femmes and the types of nudes that women artists produced for this specific context.

From Library Journal
With his electric blue rabbits, houses, and drinking men, the self-taught Traylor reflects the improvisational vitality of African Americans living in the segregated South during the Great Depression. Born a slave, the 82-year-old Traylor only left his Alabama plantation in 1935 "when [his] white folks had died and [his] children scattered." He moved 35 miles away to Montgomery, the state capital, and began to draw on discarded pieces of cardboard. By the time he died in 1949, he left a legacy of over 1000 drawings and paintings recognized today as prime examples of "outsider" art. Originally published in German to accompany the first major Traylor exhibition outside of America, this catalog celebrates Traylor's life and work with a collection of essays, a selection of full-color illustrations, and black-and-white photos of Montgomery in the 1930s, taken by Swiss journalist Annemarie Schwarzenbach and Charles Shannon, the white artist who discovered Traylor. While some of the essays are dry and academic, Helfentein's piece on Shannon's encounter with Traylor is fascinating. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries. Although written for junior and high school students, Mary Lyons's charming Deep Blues: Bill Traylor, Self-Taught Artist (Atheneum, 1994) is a suitable choice for smaller collections.AWilda Williams, "Library Journal"

Southern History Through Folk Art
By AirBnBer
I asked for a book on Old South history or folk art for Christmas, and my mom picked up Deep Blues: Bill Traylor 1854-1949. What a book! I get lost in the work of Traylor -- the king of folk art (sorry Mose T). And the photographs of Montgomery in the early 1900s tell a great story. This book moved me in so many ways, I hope it does for you as well.

Good for those intrigued by Bill Traylor
By Deb Oestreicher
This beautifully produced book contains several essays discussing "outsider artist" Bill Traylor', his brief art "career," and the character of his work. Some essays are more interesting and engaging than others, but they are all helpful in understanding the artist and his work. One disappointment of the volume: it doesn't contain a lot of reproductions of Traylor's art. Still, I would recommend this to anyone intrigued by Traylor.

Cleopatra's Wedding Present: Travels through Syria (Living Out: Gay and Lesbian Autobiographies), by Robert Tewdwr Moss

Cleopatra’s Wedding Present is the rare book that captivates its reader from the first page. Like the best travel books, Robert Tewdwr Moss’s memoir of his travels through Syria resonates on many levels: as a profoundly telling vivisection of Middle Eastern society, a chilling history of ethnic crimes, a picaresque adventure story, a purely entertaining travelogue, and a poignant romance.
Tewdwr Moss, a brilliant young writer who was murdered in London the day after he finished this book, left this lyrical gem as his legacy. He adeptly captures an essence of the Middle East that is foreign to most of us, but which becomes real with his astute observations of the region’s culture and explosive politics. He conveys what so many westerners find both fascinating and frightening in the Middle East, making no attempt to mask circumstances that are appalling and dangerous while also exotic, beautiful, and sometimes very funny.
Mesopotamia, now present-day Syria, was part of Mark Anthony’s love gift to Cleopatra. Then and now, it is a land of mystery and love.

If only it didn't have to end...
By LME
The West gets to see so little of what life is really like in the Middle East, much less how gay men live. I didn't want this book to end and wish that there could be a sequel. It's like an old-style tavelogue with a big gay twist, and honor, tragedy, opportunism and harsh reality. These are real people (photos included).

Songs of the Women Trouveres, by Eglal Doss-Quinby, Joan Tasker Grimbert, Wendy Pfeiffer, Elizabeth Aubrey

The historical existence of women trouveres in northern France during the 12th and 13th centuries has been doubted, largely because many songs were anonymous. This anthology of over 70 Old French songs, accompanied by parallel English verse translation, aims to identify female authorship, based on the evidence of lyrics, linguistics and associated manuscript details. The extensive introduction discusses the female voice in a range of lyric types, including `chanson de femme' laments, romances and indecent vernacular songs, and considers the controversial role of women poets and musicians in medieval society. Includes extracts of sheet music.
