Frank X. Gaspar is associate professor of English at Long Beach City College, Long Beach, California, and is the author of two books of poems, The Holyoke and Mass for the Grace of a Happy Death. He also recently published his first novel, Leaving Pico.

long time coming

A Field Guide to the Heavens is a much anticipated third book of poetry by this gifted craftsman. And the wait yielded a maturity that is astonishing.
Gaspar's grasp on his place, in relation to his environment and to the universe as a whole, is the play we're invited to join. I suggest this book be read at one sitting in order to appreciate the fullness of its reach.
Poems of extaordinary merit include: Metropolis, I Work Late at My Table in Summer, July in the Street of Fevers, The Lemons, A Spell Against Ruins,
and especially,
Psalms in August.
There are far too many to mention here. This is a pure, honest book of poems that delight both the soul and the tongue.

Excellent look at a little-known creature

Todd McLeish gives us a great introduction to a striking animal. While most everyone knows about narwhals, all we remember it for is the tusk. As striking as that tusk or horn is (it's a giant tooth, essentially, but one that grows in a unique spiral pattern), there's a lot more to the animal than that.
The author recounts his travels to see narwhals in North America, Greenland, and Iceland. He speaks with biologists, indigenous hunters, and various other folks. Narwhal hunting is legal, though regulated, and the tusks are still prized worldwide by collectors of natural history items. (The tusks cannot be imported legally into the U.S., though a Canadian dealer told the author it could be arranged.) Narwhals are still important sources of meat and muktuk and other useful items in the far North. McLeish attends hunts and, while a confirmed animal lover, is not opposed to controlled hunting in communities where the animal is an important food source and the entire carcass is put to use.
The males, we learn, do not use their seven-foot tusks to joust or for defense. They do have an odd habit of raising their tusks into the air in pairs or groups, like knights hoisting their lances after a tournament, and sometimes touching them together. (About one half of one percent of narwhals have two tusks, and occasional tusked females are reported.) McLeish also reports on the controversy about what the tusk is for. It's not for grubbing up food or for breaking through ice. Most cetologists regard it as strictly a sexual display item, like antlers, but a few researchers point to what appear to be nerve channels (this tooth is, compared to your teeth, essentially inside out) and think it has important functions as a sensor probe, testing water temperature and salinity in ways that might help males find females.
Narwhals are not endangered, with a population of 80,000 or so, but they face unknown effects from climate change and the accumulation of PCBs and other toxins. They are, McLeish argues convincingly, worth protecting as a part of the Arctic ecosystem and as a species admirably adapted to harsh conditions where even other whales are rare.
There are a couple of subjects I hoped the author would touch on to make this a more comprehensive book on the species. One is the hybridization of narwhals and belugas, which is rare but a confirmed fact. The other is the strange reports of narwhals or something like them from the opposite end of the Earth: a southern narwhal, while reported only a couple of times, is still an interesting topic.
Despite these small omissions, this is a terrific book. I read it through at one sitting, and and I now know a lot more about these unique cetaceans and their world.

Blow(hole)n Away!

I've always been fascinated by narwhals and other Arctic wildlife and was excited to see this book come out. I was not disappointed. This is a wonderfully written book that deftly weaves together what is known about the natural history of this awesome creature , the author's personal experiences, and the possible impacts of global upon the denizens of the Arctic.

Fairly good, rather informative. Could have been a little better written.

There isn't much on narwhals, so I had high hopes this would be the definitive book. It isn't, but I found lots of interesting detail I had not previously known.

The author visited a number of places to talk with experts, native people and others knowledgeable about the animals. He overdoes the interviews and travel details, I think, and I found it got in the way of the narrative flow. This does give a sort of legitimacy to the book, but could have been written about with a lighter hand.

Of the places he visited, narwhals seem in best shape in Greenland, but the whales are under pressure there as everywhere else they are found. He writes that the villages don't like to talk about it, but younger hunters sometimes kill narwhals just for the tusk, and at $150 per foot one can see the rationale. The undercurrent in the book is that the future for narwhals is not good.

I had not known the animals can dive so deep. Or live so long. One survey he cites, using eye lenses of narwhals (and therefore the whole animal harvested for use) can give an age for them. The survey showed that 20% of the sample were over fifty and one had lived for about 115 years.

Bodies Embalmed by Us NEVER TURN BLACK!

So ran an advertisement in a Washington, DC directory in 1863.

Gary Laderman here provides readers a survey of one of the most interesting aspects of the first century of United States history: how they cared for their dead. Using many contemporary newspapers, journals, letters and books, Laderman also draws on some never before used sources, such as the terrific collections of Old Sturbridge Village and the American Antiquarian Society.

While this text is not for either the casual reader or the faint of heart, it is a thoroughly researched introduction to the development of the American funerary system. Focusing mainly on the developments surrounding the American Civil War, Laderman does an excellent job of putting much of the most essential information together in one place.

Where the author falls short is in his focus of Northern and middle class customs, leaving out the South both before and during the Civil War, with the notable exception of George Washington's funeral. As such, it could be more appropriately subtitled. The other area where Laderman would have been well served to have expanded upon is the preparations of the deceased for burial in the antebellum years. Two pages seems hardly enough.

The work will serve the historian, anthropologist, and Civil War enthusiast very well.

While I agree with another reviewer that the text is scholarly rather than "popular," if one wishes to read a book about death and embalming that is full of action and adventure, the reader should stick to Ann Rice.

My go-to reference

Each October, I'm asked to give tours at several historic cemeteries here in CT. The Sacred Remains is the book I use most for fact checking and for answers to questions that visitors sometimes ask that I can't answer. Meticulously researched and documented, the book opens with an account of the many funerals of George Washington (GW's "invisible corpse"), with emphasis on how the extravagant, nationwide expressions of mourning affected Protestant American burial traditions and attitudes toward death itself, especially with respect to the physical remains. Adopting a cultural, sociological perspective, Dr. Laderman examines the spiritual, emotional, and psychological factors that influenced how families dealt with the preparation of the body of the deceased in the decades preceding the Civil War, when the vast majority of Americans died at home and were "laid out" by relatives and friends, and buried, necessarily, within a day or two. When the war began to produce an avalanche of disfigured corpses that died far from home, it became necessary to develop procedures for embalming those that would be transported from battlefield to their northern homes, introducing professional undertakers into what had been an intensely private process. Ending with the " birth of the "business of death" that occurred toward the end of the nineteenth century, with "corpse as commodity", the author illustrates how the mortuary industry ensured that the body would be "ushered out in a comforting manner for the living."

"The dead do not simply vanish when life is extinguished....The dead must also be accounted for in the imagination." The Sacred Remains is a compelling and important study of the ways in which Americans accomplish this task.

Seattle Social Studies

There is a lot of interesting material in this book. But as is often the case with such collections of essays, the contributions are uneven, and sometimes overlap.

Most of this book appears to be factual, but other parts read like activist blog posts. Some contributions could also do with simpler language. For example, we are told that "automobility is the dominant discourse in transport planning", and that there is "denationalized global opportunity" for Seattle (a "curative global city").

Surprisingly, there isn't a single good map of Seattle in this book--though small maps are used throughout to show various data...

Excellent information about the area

I read this book after having lived in Seattle for over a decade and found it presented King and Snohomish counties (the 2 counties was most familiar with) better than any other book I'd read on the area including those written by Knute Berger, Fred Moody, and Tim Egan. "Seattle Geographies" presents a wide swath of facts that allows readers to synthesize various aspects of the demographics and come to their own conclusions as to the underlying cultural norm of what makes up the culture of the Puget Sound area.

After I moved to Seattle, I read everything I could get my hands on for years about its culture because even after several years of living there, I still couldn't understand some of the deep underlying customs and beliefs that seemed to dominate people's thinking and actions, and I wanted very much to understand.

Although the books written by the 3 authors mentioned above were excellent and certainly contributed to my understanding, it wasn't until I read "Seattle Geographies" that everything came together. It's a book that includes a lot of data that is easy to decipher. It's not a "kick back by the fire and lose yourself" type of read, so be prepared to think a bit. However, it's not a hard read by any means; it's well written and interesting, not just a bunch of compiled data, so expect to enjoy the book. I certainly did. There are about 40 different contributors, so at least 40 different views and writing styles, almost all very accessible. The book has a good index as well.

I highly recommend this book if you're interested in understanding more about the people that make up the Puget Sound area.

an excellent treatment of greek sculpture

for the student of classical antiquity, books on art and architecture are so numerous that navigating the field without a guide at times becomes virtually impossible. in fact, treatments of greek art and archaeology are written by scholars who ideally should not have anything to do with material culture: scholars of literature and language, lacking the fundamental understanding of the material remains of antiquity and the formal training in the study of it. andrew stewart is not one of these people.

andrew stewart is professor at the university of california at berkeley, and rightfully so. his voice is that of a learned man; scholarly, but understandable, learned, but educational. in 'greek sculpture', he treats the sculptural material evidence from ancient greek with both respect and diligence, while showing an elegant understanding of literary sources. in essence, stewart's treatment of ancient greek sculpture is both light and understandable, and in-depth and pragmatic.

'greek sculpture' is a must-read for any serious student of greek art. it is uneven, but overall brilliant. especially the chapter on the 4th century BC is worth reading. the plates are numerous and aid the formidable text. the overall impression of 'greek sculpture' is an utmost impressive one; stewart has succeeded in both providing the more advanced student with a strong survey and allowing the beginner a view into the most interesting field of ancient greek art. this book must be read by all. it is well worth the $70.

I would highly recommend this work to any serious student of Greek sculpture. It is immensely accessible, with a clear explanation of the sculptor's craft, evolution of the art form, and the greatest sculptors from the Archaic through the Hellenistic periods.
