A must-read!

Long overdue to say the least, this dynamite look at the life & films of the great Richard Brooks is a must read. Brooks, inflammatory in his personal life and director of such classics as CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, ELMER GANTRY & IN COLD BLOOD is one of the least written about of the master directors. This is such a well put together & thorough book, you'll not be able to put it down. With some excellent commentary by the likes of Shirley Jones, Scott Wilson, Brooks's ex-wife Jean Simmons and many others, the book is chock full of insight into how this maverick worked and created some of the best films of the 1950s & 1960s. One critique: lousy reproduction of some interesting photos/movies stills.

Insightful and Enriching

Douglass Daniel's book on Richard Brooks provides not only a personal insight into one of Hollywood's most fascinating directors, it also gives the reader a sense of how far Brooks's creative career reached. Brooks was a director whose career spanned from the days of the studio system into the modern filmmaking industry. Daniel shows how Brooks developed his reputation as a "tough as nails" boss on the set. It also shows how resolute and saavy Brooks was in piloting his own career, rising from the ranks of writer to become director with an immense degree of autonomy over his projects. Being tough includes taking risks, facing criticism, and being smart enough the overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of your goals. Through Daniel's biography, a picture of Richard Brooks emerges as having all of these attributes. On top of being a man of tremendous talent and energy, Daniel illustrates Brooks as a man with the backbone to remain true to his principles. Tough as nails indeed.

Long Overdue Biography of Richard Brooks

Richard Brooks was a top writer-director. I love many of his Hollywood films such as The Professionals and In Cold Blood, two of my favorites. I even like his less successful films $ (Dollars) and Fever Pitch.

Ever since I was a teenager I've read whatever I could find on Brooks, which has not been much. He was very controlling of his work, not even giving his scripts to his actors to know the movie they were working on.

I never understood why no one had ever written a biography on Brooks before -- and still don't. But I'm very grateful to have this book now.

Author Douglass K. Daniel has spent years researching Brooks life and uncovering information that even actress Jean Simmons, Brooks' wife of twenty years, didn't know. Fascinating and page-turning. I only wish that it was two or three times longer.

Daniel also doesn't spare any punches. He writes of how salty and difficult Brooks could be, sometimes unwarranted. But his actors and crew still rallied around him because they knew that he stood out from the pack.

His passion for the written word and protecting the words that he wrote, the biggest reason he became a producer-director, is on every page.

I inhaled this book when it arrived in the mail last week and am now going through it again and more thoroughly. As well as piling a stack of DVDs of Richard Brooks' by the TV to go through again.

Every time I watch a Richard Brooks film it makes me want to write. Reading Douglass K. Daniel's insightful glimpse into Brooks' life inspires me to want to open up my laptop and start pounding the keys.

If anyone is thinking of buying this book -- then stop. Buy it! Then start savoring the pages for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

Pick (history, Univ. of London; War Machine: The Rationalisation of Slaughter in the Modern Age) has written a fascinating cultural critique of George du Maurier's novel Trilby (1893-94). This story of a singer and her sinister manager, Svengali, contains many examples of British late-Victorian obsessions and desires. It was a great success on both sides of the Atlantic and served as the basis of many plays and films. Pick discusses Friedrich Mesmer (1734-1815), Jean Martin Charcot (1825-93), and Freud in order to clarify the psychology of hypnotism and also describes the Dreyfus affair, Oscar Wilde's trial, and Wagner's anti-Semitic writings as similar phenomena of the time. Works by Poe, Dickens, and Henry James are mentioned to show the range of writers concerned with the same themes as du Maurier. In the process, Pick touches on crowd psychology, sexual control, anti-Semitism, music, and the evil eye as elements in the novel and as aspects of British public life. The result is an interesting view of a great popular success of the time. Recommended for literature collections.

A Window and A Mirror

Decades ago while earning a graduate degree in comparative literature, I happened to come upon a badly-written novel authored by George Du Maurier. When I later asked my professor about it, he explained that Trilby was in fact a bestseller after its publication (in 1894) but that its only claim to literary fame is that it introduces a character named Svengali. I recalled that conversation as I began to read Pick's book. It is a brilliant achievement. The "web" to which the title refers consists of all manner of connections between hypnotism and anti-Semitism. Those connections are presumably what attracted Pick to Trilby and, especially, to the implications of the novel's great success in Victorian England.
Centuries earlier in A Merchant in Venice, Shakespeare introduced a usurer named Shylock who was viewed with contempt by most of the other characters. Revealingly, only Shylock fully honors all of the terms and conditions in his financial transactions to which others voluntarily (indeed eagerly) agree and yet he is reviled. Indeed, he is the principal victim in the play and yet, even today, is often viewed as the villain...usually by those who have not read the play or at least not read it with care. Shylock's name remains synonymous with unscrupulous money-lenders. Perhaps Pick had this in mind as he began to examine the character Svengali whose name is synonymous with hypnotic, almost irresistible evil. In any event, with consummate skill, Pick uses Svengali as a focal point through which to examine all manner of social and political forces at work in late-19th century England. In our own age when so many movies seem to be made primarily to sell merchandise, the "Trilby Phenomenon" also suggests commercial implications of mesmerizing significance.

This book effectively shows that ancient sports were
also about the rough and tumble and agony, as well
as the skill, courage, and cleverness. The book
is a complete survey including information about
ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, but primarily focuses
on Greek and Roman sports and venues.
As the author, Michael Poliakoff, says in Chapter
I, "General Aspects of the Ancient Combat Sports,"
"Boxing, wrestling, and pankration, a sport that
allowed a variety of unarmed fighting tactics, were
the three important forms of combat sport in the
ancient world. *** The element of fighting makes
combat sports easy to mark off as a group; more
difficult is settling on a definition of sport in
general. I define sport and athletics in this book
as activity in which a person physically competes
against another in a contest with established
regulations and procedures, with the immediate
object of succeeding in that contest under criteria
for determining victory that are different from those
that mark success in everyday life."
The chapters of the book are: General Aspects of
the Ancient Combat Sports/ Wrestling/ Pankration/
Stick Fighting/ Boxing/ The Nature and Purpose of
Combat Sport/ The Participants in Greek Combat
Sport/ Metaphor, Myth, and Reality/ as well as
an Appendix titled "Combat Sport, Funeral Cult,
and Human Sacrifice."
The book is very well illustrated throughout
the text with photographs from vases, drinking
cups, statues, Egyptian wall paintings and
sculptures, a photo of a Greek wrestling
manuscript, and a modern photo of Nuba wrestlers
in the Sudan.
Each of the chapters is also divided into
interesting sub-sections. In Chapter VI, for
instance, the sub-sections are: The Problem of
Athletic Violence/ The Nature of Ancient Criticism/
Military Consideratons/ Military Critics/ An
Agonistic Society/ Sport in Other Cultures: The
Contrast with Greece/ and, Greek Agon and Social
Need.
Each chapter starts with a highly interesting
and engrossing introductory paragraph. From the
"Wrestling" chapter comes this: "Wrestling appealed
deeply to the ancients. Though far from being a
gentle sport, it is substantially less violent and
injurious than the other two combat sports: it pits
one man against another in a close struggle that
maximizes the role of skill and science. In a
manner that encourges wide participation, it tests
an array of martial virtues: cunning, boldness,
courage, self-reliance, and perseverance."

Nothing New Under the Sun

Fans of modern day Pankration, as in the UFC, Pride and other such events, will be fascinated to read of the close parallels between the ancient and modern versions in terms of technique, match style as well as audience reception. Many of the same issues facing the sport today were dealt with by the ancients.

More important perhaps is what is revealed regarding the importance and effectiveness of combat sports outside the competitive arena. Poliakoff quotes Homer, Alexander and others to make the point that boxing, wrestling and pankration may not be so effective in producing an effective warrior. Alexander, for instance, didn't approve of boxing and wrestling but did favor stick fighting. Champion athletes in the Iliad are cowardly in battle. The Romans blame the Greek love of "games" on their decline.

Scholarly, readable, relevant.

Very good historical review of "Combat Sports." back then.

I give this book an 8 because it had a vlaue to me beyond what normally would be sought. I am a fan of today's comabt sports, the UFC, Pancrase, Vale Tudo, etc... This was the beginning and it was facinating to me. I had read about Pancration, Boxing and Wrestling in ancient times in another book (which this list doesn't have access to I notice...) called "Living in teh Combat Zone" by Rick Renner - published by Pillar Books of Tulsa OK. It's A Christian book, but has tremendous historical value as well.

Samuel Rogers and Walter Scott are alive in these pages and mix of historical figures also appears, including Rob Roy, William Wallace, Robert the Bruce and Robert Burns. Dorothy even incorporates early versions of her brother's poems in order to enhance own descriptions.

The Little Lady Who Started It All

Before the diaries and journals of Sylvia Plath, May Sarton, Katherine Mansfield, Virginia Woolf, Alice James and others - there was the genius sister (of poet William Wordsworth), Ms. Dorothy Wordsworth. In her time especially (the 18th century to early 19th century), women were not taken seriously as would-be authors, poets, scholars or little else. The diary and belle lettres were their only outlet for such gifts. Dorothy was no stranger to sex discrimination so she hunkered down to record in the most gorgeous prose-poetry you have possibly ever read - her life and times travelling about Scotland and Europe as a lady of wealth, style and panache with her brother William and a few very famous companions I can't give away here. If you can afford it, purchase this book and her other two diaries-"The Grasmere Journals" and "The Continental Journals." They are all page-turners.

Dorothy Wordsworth takes you inside Scottish homes and public houses as if you were there. The first edition was published 125 years ago. The 1997 photographs, notes and introduction by Carol Kyros Walker greatly enhance the original work for a modern reader, especially one like me who has never been to Scotland. Having only one letter from my Scottish ancestors of the period, but remembering the relatives of my childhood, I can vividly imagine their forbears' ways and lives before they left Scotland in the early 1800's. The author combines a keen eye with honesty and frankness. She has much affection for the Scots.

This is a well-written book with excellent photographs. This book presents the results of conservation efforts for medieval age Christian Egyptian, Coptic, wall paintings at Saint Anthony monastery, Egypt. The monastery is believed to be the first Christian monastery in the world. In the preface, the writers outlined the genesis of this conservation effort. They also provided progress photographs for some of the early and limited test cleaning work that showed the promising and extraordinary work of art that was underneath centuries of grime and over painting. The preservation and restoration efforts were funded by a grant from the United States Agency for International Aid (USAID).
As an American from Coptic ancestry, I would like to express thanks and appreciation to the American people, government and the USAID for their support for the conservation work of the Coptic cultural heritage and art.
The book outlines the history and life of Saint Anthony the great (251-356 AD). Saint Anthony is considered to be the father of or originator of monasticism. However, there is evidence that the ancient Egyptians temples included devotees, who led lives of prayer, learning and pursuit of wisdom, celibacy, and poverty, e.g. the story of Ptolemaios and Harmais the Serapeum temple devotees circa 164-158BC. It could be argued that, the Egyptian converts to Christianity continued to use of their past artistic and cultural heritage in new or modified ways compatible with Christian teaching. For example the Copts continued to use the ancient Egyptian ankh symbol in conjunction with the cross. Artifacts from the early centuries AD show the use of both the ankh and the cross. Contemporary Copts continue to use the ankh and the cross together as jewelry pieces. Similar arguments could be made about the artist rendering of Isis and baby Horus, which may have been used by early Coptic artists as a model to portray the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. Saint Anthony the great led a solitary life in the desert. Accordingly the Coptic/Greek term monachos or monk in English was used. Saint Athanasius the Apostolic of Alexandria (296-373 AD) introduced monasticism to the west through his famous book the Life of Anthony. Contrary to the image painted for Anthony as an unlettered person, the book comments on letters of Anthony, of which seven are extant. The letters show Anthony to be well versed in platonic philosophy and Alexandrian theological traditions. Furthermore his letters emphasize gnosis or knowledge, and echoes the Greek philosophical tradition," Know thyself".
The book is written by several authors from different disciplines art history, history, archaeology, anthropology, and art conservation. The contributors to the book are mostly Americans and Copts from Egypt. The conservation team was led by Adriano Luzi and Luigi De Cesaris from Italy. Luzi and De Cesaris participated prior to this effort in the conservation of the paintings in the tomb of Nefertari. The main wall paintings in the monastery were originally the work of a team Coptic artists led by a master artist, Theodore Zographos, the painter, or the writer of life in Greek, circa 1232-1233 AD. The book indicates that the Coptic Church did not enjoy any royal patronage that could have helped funding churches or monasteries. The temporal rulers of Egypt from about 640AD were Muslims, and far from donating funds for churches, they actually taxed monks and forbade them from building churches without permission. The high-quality paintings in the Church of Saint Anthony were painted on dry plaster, in a technique called secco. Neither the pigments nor the plaster were of more than modest cost. About 33-40 Copts are believed to have been the patrons of the 13th century artwork. In addition to paying for the project, one or more of these 13th century Coptic patrons are likely the designers of the painting program. The style of Theodore is thoroughly Coptic, however the 13th century art is different from the first centuries of Christian art in Egypt. It is possible to discern the influence of Islamic, Byzantine and even Romanesque arts on the Coptic art of that era. The conservation work shows 6 layers of paintings, some of which date back the 5th-7th century. The results of the conservation work further indicate that the newly visible early 13th century paintings are so greatly at odds with art historical expectations that they mandate a near total reevaluation of the Coptic art after the Arabs conquest of Egypt.
This is a book that provides both entertainment and information. It would be a good addition for art, art history, and conservation aficionados.

Monastic Father:
Saint Anthony is often called 'Father of the Monastics,' being credited with the founding of Christian monasticism, many of his ideals still survive to this day. Most of what we know about St. Anthony comes from a biography by his close friend Athanasius, Archbishop of Alexandria. Anthony was born about AD 251 for a rich Christian family of Coma, in mid upper Egypt. Hearing Christ address to the rich young man, he left everything to start monastic desert dwelling.

St. Anthony's Monastery:
Hidden deep within the Red Sea Mountains and depending on local springs for their water needs, St. Anthony's Monastery and its neighboring St. Paul, are the oldest inhabited monasteries in eastern Egypt. Monks in both communities still observe ancient monastic schema that have been established by Anthony's disciple Macarius for more than fourteen centuries. During the sixth and seventh centuries many monks from the Skete, in today's Wadi El Natroun desert, migrated to St. Antony's dwellings and established this monastery, to avoid the frequent attacks by Bedouins. St. Anthony monastery was plundered many times, and even destroyed in part during the 11th century. This remotely located cenobitic community flourished during the 12th to 14th centuries, but was plundered again in the mid 15th by Sinaitic Bedouins, after which attacks it acquired its fortress style walls. Like many ancient antiquity Egyptian monasteries, over many years of its existence it was ecumenical, hosting monks of different ethnicity, especially Henophysite orthodox from the fertile crescent.

A fine team work:
At the request of the Ancient Monastery of St. Anthony, the conservation of the paintings in the church began in 1996. The American Research Center in Egypt could allocate funds through the US AID, for its Antiquities Development Project. Some newly discovered paintings can be dated back to the sixth or seventh century, but the main bulk is traced to the 12/13 century. These high quality revealed mural paintings demonstrate a stylistic and conceptual iconic tradition established by the early Christians of Egypt, but reveal an influence of Byzantine and even Islamic art of the era.

Iconic Theology:
Since an icon is said to be written, it should be properly read, by looking through it into eternity as iconphiles always claimed. One icon is more impressive than many books on theology, and more edifying than a sermon, it offers a link with the victorious Church. Thus was the original reason in Alexandria, its founder, to utilize icons in teaching the faith to those who knew not reading, young and old. The Miaphysite Copts and Syrians, whose theology dominated the mid Orient before the advent of Islam, were still concerned with the unity of the person of Christ, that even the transfiguration icon failed to demonstrate how Christ's Divine nature could be revealed. Praying with icons became a Byzantine doctrine, that the feast of Orthodoxy is the commemoration of its restoration.

Coptic Mural Paintings:
Dr. George Bebawi, Nottingham's Patrologist, exhorts that the central office of Coptic Icons was educational. He takes the ancient Coptic murals exemplified by the pre icon era of Deir Bawit murals, to explain that the Coptic Church, first to introduce Icons, meant them as teaching aids, posting them on the ceiling, or as a later tradition, high on the iconstatis.
As for the saints, Fr. Matthew the poor, abbot of St. Macarius, explains the Coptic conception of icons as, "mystical mediation through saint's icons could be explained by Copts behavior, when praying for virtual benediction, in front of a saint's icon, an exercise of remote fellowship, a confession of a spiritual gap yet to be crossed in their eternal fellowship."

Team beyond a Book:
The authorship of this book is the result of a team work of an art historians, conservators, an archaeologist, and an anthropologist, that gives an elaborate account on the medieval church and an informed discussion of the meaning beyond these revelations. The authors attempt to place those wonderful paintings within the artistic and historical icon traditions of both Coptic Egypt and evaluate the influence of the mediaeval eastern Mediterranean.
Fr. Maximus Anthonite, helped the author, Dr. Elizabeth Bolman, professor of medieval art history at Temple University. Some of the contributors are Luigi De Cesaris, Mark Easton, Gawdat Gabra, Patrick Godeau, Michael Jones, Adriano Luzi, William Lyster, Robert Vincent., Jr., and Elizabeth E. Oram. Patristic Scholarship of Fr. Sidney Griffith, Dr. Birger Pearson, and Fr. Tim Vivian added a special flovor to the project's outcome and evaluation.

Early in the 12th century, goldsmiths at the Benedictine Abbey of Conques began to create enamels with jewel-like colours and rich, golden surfaces. By the 1160s their techniques were perfected, and the enamels made in the French city of Limoges were a hallmark of the region. Included in the book are nearly 200 religious objects, secular decorations, and small items such as medallions and pendants created for ecclesiastical and royal patrons such as Pope Innocent III and King Henry II of England. Strikingly beautiful, the works are also important for the information they impart about life in the age of monasticism and the cult of saints, and about the elegance of the Court and the dramatic history of the monarchy. Six essays provide insights into the enamals in terms of the origins and evolution of Limoges work, the history of Limoges and the Limousin region, the materials and techniques used by the goldsmiths of Limoges, and the iconography and provenance of the works themselves.

This book is gorgeous, featuring full color, large images, and lots of details.

Just as a side note - the "paperback" version that's listed with this book is NOT the same book (ISBN 0-915557-79-7). That book is completely black and white and has nothing to do with the enamels, and reviews more modern art work that's less than 20 years old.

Her writing brings you into the book.

It's difficult to write a review for Ms. Rosenfarb's books. She truly captures you. I wish I had the ability to read it in Yiddish to gain the true feeling of the depth of her words. I feel so fortunate that I was introduced to this trilogy. It would have be terribly sad to miss this touching, frightening, terrible beautifully written part of us.

With characteristic flair, the sour Latinist Tertullian called Rome "the happy church on which the Apostles poured forth all their teaching together with their blood." Such emotional extremes, axiomatic of Tertullian, apply equally to papal histories, often given to the heights and depths of spiritual excitement. Duffy (Magdalene Coll., Cambridge) offers this abundantly illustrated, amiably presented history to accompany a multinational television series for Britain, France, and Ireland. Such a pedigree often provokes disdain among bookish sorts, but Duffy's scholarship and enthusiasm overcome the book's populist roots. While not necessarily uncovering anything strikingly new and more akin to a handbook than a treatise, this work merits applause for providing a people's papal retrospective. A sumptuous feast of popes and kings, nimbly prepared by historian Duffy, a fellow at Magdelen College, Cambridge. This book is intended as a tie-in to a six-part British television series on the history of the papacy, scheduled to appear on the History Channel in the spring of 1998. For a companion volume, this history is surprisingly dense and sophisticated. More important, although Duffy certainly remarks on the papacy's more salacious past (like Boniface's comment that sex with boys or women was no more sinful than ``rubbing one hand against another''), he never stoops to a tabloidesque fascination with the all-too-human foibles of the pontiffs. Rather, Duffy uses the evolving institution of the papacy from Peter to John Paul II as a lens through which to view two millennia of Western civilization. He profiles the missionary activity of the early Church, the consolidation of power with the bishop of Rome (who became the acknowledged pope), the emergence of monastic reform, the schism with Constantinople, the ``Babylonian Captivity'' of the papacy in 14th-century Avignon, Luther's protest, and the Catholic Reformation that met his challenge. If the last third of the book seems to lose some of its energy, it might be because, as Duffy subtly observes, the modern papacy is a quite different institution than its predecessor. Shorn of political power and the most obvious signs of avarice, it now commands a holy respect. Duffy claims that the current pope asserts ``a spiritual status . . . greater than at any time since the high Middle Ages.'' Truly a masterpiece

For the reader that would delve into the history of the popes and their relationship to secular authority, this book is by far the most informative and reads like a good novel.
Duffy, a Roman Catholic historian, carefully depicts the strengths and weaknesses of each of the popes and their successes and failures of their pontificates. One is often left amazed how dependent the popes were on secular powers and how they strongly needed them to succeed in their objectives and to maintain their position in the papacy.
Often their personal lives did not reflect the character and integrity of their office as Duffy has pointed out, most of the popes having mistresses from whom they begot illegitimate children, or having committed major crimes against their enemies. Some exploited their office for their own personal gain or that of their families. Many of the popes left the papacy in near bankruptcy with heavy debts acquired to achieve their political objectives or in their attempt to build large cathedrals to their glory.
One theme constantly heard in the various reigns of the popes in the demand for continual reform with some of the popes being obvious sinners bringing the papacy into dispute. Very few of the popes were people of high moral integrity or saints, as we would conceive of them. Some, however, were outstanding and brought the papacy to great heights.
Definitely a five star master production, this book is very readable and structured for most students that would do research on the history of the Roman Catholic Church. Documentation is good with references to key events. This book is clearly a good reliable reference and a must for the library of the student of church history.

I really like this survey of 2000 years of the history of the Popes. I disagreed with the author on a couple points in the very early Church as his rationale was faulty, but overall I think it is very readable and helpful for those interested in the Popes.

Saints and Sinners Indeed

Eamon Duffy's small tome - a contradiction in terms, admittedly, but such a contradiction aptly fits its subject matter - is probably about as detailed a history as one could have in slightly less than 400 pages. Duffy aims towards a fair, balanced view not only of the papacy's history, but of individual popes. The title of the book itself describes not only those that make up the history of the papacy, but the conflicting tendencies that existed within individual popes as well.
Part of the benefit of reading this book is that one not only learns the socio-historical elements of the papacy - and it should be remembered that the papacy is the most administrative and political element of the Roman Catholic church - but the development of the theology behind the papacy. The primacy of the bishop of Rome emerges as the most historically contentious issue. Duffy notes that the 2nd century Church Father Irenaeus gives the Church of Rome a place of primacy in his writings, but that the idea of the pope being successor of St. Peter the apostle is not documented until the 3rd century. The tensions between the bishop of Rome and the bishop of Constantinople begin to develop more after Constantine moves the center of the Roman Empire from Rome to Constantinople, wedding politics to religion in Constantinople in a new way.
Duffy writes that until Charlemagne, the Church of the East was not only the hotbed of the heresy, but also the hotbed of political dissidents; that such political-religious friction should exist in the capital of the Roman Empire, given the new union of religion to politics, is not surprising. Duffy tries to sort through the various political-religious controversies of this time period, but it becomes obvious that splitting religion from politics in the ancient Roman empire is difficult, if not impossible to do. The history of the papacy between 1054 (the Great Schism between the East and the West) through Napoleon is largely corrupt, however. Once the empire split in two, Rome becomes the political-religious center of the West and the papacy's spirituality degenerates as it is continually thrown to the highest bidder. The Reformation and the religious wars of the 17th century appear to be inevitable. The fragmentation of Europe into nation-states, although largely political, was not without theological ramifications.
Interestingly enough, the distance between the spiritual and secular-political elements of the papacy happens with the theological development of papal infallibility during Vatican I. The official teaching steered clear of the radical views of the Ultramontanists, who held that everything the pope taught was infallible - that revelation was "on tap", as Duffy puts it. Vatican I still gave to the papacy (the office, not the pope as an individual) a level of primacy and honor that has long been claimed by the bishop of Rome, but it rendered the pope's "infallibility" only in matters pertaining to faith and morals (therefore, not politics, science, art, etc.), of concern to the whole church and in consultation with other bishops; the pope will be guided by God should he speak "ex cathedra" - from the chair of Peter. Duffy immediately notes that this has only happened one time, on the issue of the assumption of Mary into heaven (which the vast majority of Christians have believed since at least the second century). Despite the controversy that this doctrine has brought about, Duffy's coverage of it causes it to seem rather anti-climactic.
The book may end seeming a bit dated to some, as the last chapter only goes through 1997 (with a passing reference, oddly enough, to 2002). Duffy covers the highly controversial papacy of Pius XII with a good bit of critical sympathy and then proceeds to discuss the period of Vatican II and what a watershed event it was. He notes the theological changes, the political tensions and the changes that occurred between popes John XXIII and Paul VI as the latter continued to convene the council. He concludes with the current pope, John Paul II, noting his philosophical brilliance, his desire for reunion with the Eastern Orthodox Church and his conservativism regarding the theology of the papacy. He notes that John Paul II is a complex figure, at once a humanist and theologically conservative, defying the simple labels of "liberal" or "conservative". Although John Paul II's full history has yet to be written, Duffy provides an excellent trajectory from where he has gone to where he is likely to go by the end of his life.
My only complaint with the book is that Duffy shows something of an ambivalent attachment style to most of the popes after 1054. While a "liberal" such as John XXIII garners heavy praise from him, other popes less conducive to the modern era are denigrated. The question is, "what makes the modern era so great and why should modernizing trends be seen as necessary and/or good?" In many ways, I agree with Duffy, but would also prefer to not have a pope praised at one point and then berated only a few pages later; at points Duffy sounds like a broken record as he oscillates between the two for one pope after another.
In the end, though, this is a very well written book. The appendices - a list of the popes, a glossary and how a pope is made today - are helpful. The history of the papacy is a thick one and Duffy does not make light of this, including at the end of his book a bibliographical essay that details secondary and primary sources that further illuminate each time period he covers. For a fuller understanding of Western political and/or religious history, historical theology and/or Roman Catholicism, this is a find edition to include in one's library.
