THE ONLY ENGLISH MONARCH GIVEN THE TITLE "THE GREAT"
By Lance C. Panzer
And it was justly deserved. King Alfred ruled Wessex, England 871-899. His country was in a deplorable educational decline--old monks died before teaching the younger monks how to read Latin, and so a great many works were lost to illiteracy. England had fallen into a chasm of bitter feuding between warlords after the Romans left in 410. But most pressingly--the Danes attacked at their leisure--by the thousands--pillaging, raping, and burning. After his three brothers had succeeded to the throne, and each was killed in battle, Alfred suddenly found himself wearing the crown, commanding a kingdom battered by seemingly inexhaustible enemies and mired in despair. His resources were terribly low, monetary and otherwise, and yet King Alfred and his loyal army (and navy) won enough battles to force the Danes to make peace--and he even converted the pagan King Guthrum to Christianity. King Alfred recruited scholars from the continent, he was friends with the grandchildren of Charlemagne, he exhorted his noblemen to read books, he erected forts at strategic points all across the boundaries of Wessex, and he is generally acknowledged as the father of the British Navy. The man was nothing short of genius.

Douglas Woodruff's book brings King Alfred back to life: The events of his father's reign, the circumstances of Alfred's ascent to the throne, the sense of patriotism he instilled in his subjects, and the after-effects of Alfred's commitment to God and Country--the man's spirit echoed for centuries. Indeed, England celebrated the 1,000-year anniversaries of both Alfred's birth and death.

The author includes maps of Anglo-Saxon England, Anglo-Saxon paintings and drawings, photos of Anglo-Saxon (and Dane) armor, photos of gargantuan drawings carved into hillsides commemorating Alfred's victories (which still exist today), and even photos of Anglo-Saxon jewelry and coins.

For either the novice, or the seasoned student of English history, this book will fascinate.

Too powerful and unifying a theory of technique hovering over the analyst can burden a treatment. Technique is in the details and in the moment. And many among the recent contributions to psychoanalytic technique can be seen as additive rather than substitutive, each in its time and place. These are among the core ideas underlying Fred Pine's newest book. His flexible and integrative thinking is rich in clinical reasoning, clinical concepts, and clinical illustrations. Starting from a discussion of the sources of diversity in technique, Pine examines a number of specific clinical pathways into the daily work between analyst and analysand, having to do with transference and extratransference, the intrapsychic and the interactive, defect and deficit, multiple models, and ego psychological and developmental issues.

From Library Journal
This book "guides the general reader into a dialogue" with Aeschylean drama and Athenian history circa 507-458 B.C. Three chapters on Aeschylus' times, his "world vision," and the early Athenian theater (oddly quiet about the Greater Dionysiac Festival itself), prepare for detailed studies of the seven extant plays. Eminent in his field, Herington is best at setting each play within the context of the four-play performance, at incorporating fragments from lost plays, and at tracing broad themes of Aeschylean dramaturgy: male/female, city/clan polarities, movement from the human to the divine plane, etc. In his insistence upon Aeschylus' contemporary concerns, however, he ignores mythic structures formative in Greek culture at least since the time of Hesiod 200 years earlier. Is Emily Dickinson "the female Sade"? Is Donatello's David a bit of paedophile pornography? What is the secret kinship between Byron and Elvis Presley, between the Medusa and Madonna? How do liberals and feminists - as well as conservatives - fatally misread human nature? This audacious and omnivorously learned work of guerilla scholarship offers nothing less than a unified-field theory of Western culture, high and low, since the Egyptians invented beauty - making a persuasive case for all art as a pagan battleground between male and female, form and chaos, civilisation and demonic nature.

Review
"Sexual Personae is an enormous sensation of a book, in all the better senses of 'sensation'. There is no book comparable in scope, stance, design or insight." Harold Bloom "A fine, disturbing book. It seeks to attack the reader's emotions as well as his/her prejudices. It is very learned. Each sentence jabs like a needle." Anthony Burgess "It relentlessly pursues its ambition to assault the emotions, batter the brain and aim a kick at the groin." Alan Bold, The Times "Provocative... a radical reappraisal of the human condition. Her style is marked by angry exhiliration, brittle epigrams and acid paradoxes." Times Literary Supplement

From the Publisher
"A remarkable book, at once outrageous and compelling, fanatical and brilliant....One must be awed by [Paglia's] vast energy, erudition and wit"--Washington Post Book World

From the Inside Flap
From ancient Egypt through the nineteenth century, Sexual Personae explores the provocative connections between art and pagan ritual; between Emily Dickinson and the Marquis de Sade; between Lord Byron and Elvis Presley. It ultimately challenges the cultural assumptions of both conservatives and traditional liberals. 47 photographs.

The Last Cowgirl
By Subterranean Subterfuge
This entrancing work escapes the ennui inspiring ridiculousness that so much of the feminist mainstream has come to embody.

Whatever you think of Paglia, agree with her, disagree with her, she's a ferocious thinker.

This book is part Ernest Becker, part Sade, part Lucretius.

Five Stars
By Victoria Heal
Full of universal truths - the modern continuation of the Bible - should be read like the Bible - sometimes in small sections as each chapter and verse has applicability in multiple ways. Amazing! What is in the unpublished parts? Where's the rest of it? Surely Paglia has enough money by now to publish the rest of this work for herself. She's very mean.

But Paglia is brilliant and most of what she says is the truth ...
By Jessica
Read at your own peril. Changed the way I see EVERYTHING forever and I can no longer relate to my generation or the majority of "educated people" in the modern world. But Paglia is brilliant and most of what she says is the truth beyond doubt. The implications of this book are vast and it should be required reading, especially in universities today where the classrooms have been hijacked by marxist multicultural relativists and Frankfurt School ideologues. "We have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men." -George Orwell

The Gendering of Men, 1600-1750, Volume 1: The English Phallus, by Thomas A. King

Taking on nothing less than the formation of modern genders and sexualities, Thomas A. King develops a history of the political and performative struggles that produced both normative and queer masculinities in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The result is a major contribution to gender studies, gay studies, and theater and performance history.
"The Gendering of Men, 16001750" traces the transition from a society based on alliance, which had subordinated all men, women, and boys to higher ranked males, to one founded in sexuality, through which men have embodied their claims to personal and political privacy. King proposes that the male body is a performative production marking men s resistance to their subjection within patriarchy and sovereignty. Emphasizing that categories of gender must come under historical analysis, "The Gendering of Men" explores men s particpation in an ongoing struggle for access to a universal manliness transcending other biological and social differentials.
This is volume one of two projected volumes."

""The Gendering of Men is a wonderful book. . . . it is sure to make a splash in GLBT studies and history, in queer studies, and in eighteenth-century studies. Building on previous scholarly works that interrogate notions of sexuality and gender in the 'long eighteenth century (1660-1800), ' King complicates and clarifies ways in which we can understand early-modern and modern sexual and gender identities."--Hans Turley, University of Connecticut

"Those interested in queer studies, performance studies, and early modern culture will find this book valuable."--"Choice," Sept. 2005

"Dazzling in the depth and breadth of scholarly inquiry that has gone into the book's production, the reach of King's argument will do much to persuade those less or little interested in theater to think again about the relevance of this genre to any research of the period."--Susan Bennett, University of Calgary, Canada

A Time of Major Change in Viewpoint
By John Matlock
It seems to be commonly believed that Alexander the Great was sexually attracted to both young men and to women. (In fact I've heard that the Greek govenment is suing the recent TV production for claimin this.)

In this book Professor King traces the transition of a society which had subordinated all men, women and boys to higher ranked males to one founded in sexuality. He explores the subject through literature, through the actors on stage, and in portraits from the time.

I found particularily interesting his intrepretation of the many times in Shakespeare's plays that a woman and/or young man exchange identities. (It is perhaps significant that the author worked as a stage manager in Chicago before his teaching career.) This is likely to be a seminal book in gender studies for some years.

Activist, writer and outing advocate Signorile's analysis of lesbian and gay public life and the modern gay rights movement coincides with the 25th anniversary of Stonewall.

From Kirkus Reviews
Best known as the ``pioneer of outing'' (identifying homosexuals in public life), gay activist-journalist Signorile (a columnist for The Advocate) offers no revelations in this angry memoir. A history of outing, primarily addressed to ``queers,'' it's a cry to break down the ``closets of power''--``to be out, proud, and queer in America.'' Evolving from a repressed and hypocritical young Italian male from Staten Island, Signorile became a provocateur, directing his anger against the power structures he considered responsible for the ``demonization'' and ``marginalization'' of gays: the religious right, the N.Y.C. media, the Washington political establishment, Hollywood. From his days in p.r., spent providing gossip for various columnists, the author learned to use the media and found that ``outing'' Malcolm Forbes, Cher's daughter, John Travolta, and Pete Williams (the Assistant Secretary of Defense during the Gulf War) gave gays a sense of dignity and affirmation that, he says, exceeded the right to privacy his victims claimed: Signorile draws a pointed analogy to what he calls Anita Hill's ``outing'' of Clarence Thomas. But the author's argument becomes sinister in its McCarthy-like allusions: tales of an unnamed ``closeted'' legislator, a Hollywood mogul, and a high-placed advisor to President Clinton who's ``still up to his old tricks''--which, in D.C., a city ``overflowing with queers,'' apparently means using sex to gain power. Signorile sees the gay power base shifting to Silicon Valley, where many gays have found refuge and success in computer technology: The video-display terminal, he says, will be ``the new battleground'' and electronic mail ``the ammunition.'' A call to arms that, for serious readers, raises important legal, ethical, and psychological issues, and, for gossips, offers an opportunity to identify new ``suspects.'' -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. Review

“Queer in America offers a detailed and powerful account of the destructive workings of the closet on the lives of those in it, gay people in general, and the social institutions that structure meaning and power in America. Openly gay people, in order to live morally, must not play along with the convention of the closet [which] treats gays as less than human...Signorile’s brilliant analysis shows why.”—Richard D. Mohr, The Nation

“In this combative, powerful, gutsy book, [Signorile] charges that three power structures—Washington, Hollywood, the media industry—conspire to keep gays and lesbians in the closet.”—Publishers Weekly

"I consider Queer in America one of the most important books of the twentieth century."—Larry Kramer

“A journalistic history of gay activism in the AIDS era, a coming-of-age coming-out memoir, a manual for guerrilla politics in the Age of Information, and even a utopian blueprint for the high-tech liberation of coming generations of lesbians and gay men. Queer in America will open minds as well as closets.”—Washington Post

"Signorile has almost single-handedly transformed the American political landscape."—Boston Phoenix

"[Queer in America’s] greatest contribution lies not in [its] defense of outing, but in its critical analysis of the closet. Signorile proposes that the closet, while a private tragedy, is also a public institution, one that’s actively maintained by the media, the political establishment, and the entertainment industry. . . . A provocative idea from a provocative thinker [whom] you may embrace or detest, but you can’t easily dismiss."—New York Newsday

Eye opening and enlightening
By Rory
Never before did I have such a strong understanding of how the media and America's major power structures work until I read this book. In his unapoletic confrontational (and even gutsy) style, Signorile has stared down the actors, directors, politicians, writers, etc who'd prefer to sit silent as queers are beaten, taunted, denied housing, equal protection; as queers are denied their right exist. One of the most fascinating sections is the one on the New York power structure (I especially like the chapter explaining how ACT UP was created, from the grassroots up). If theres anything I disliked about this book, it's that too often Signorile contradicts his own beleifs: there are way too many times when instead of exposing gay public figures as gay, he allows them to remain anonymous.

Somewhat dated in scope, nonetheless pioneering in influence
By A Customer
Signorile's ground-breaking text on the Closet and all its horror should be fundamental reading for everyone--gay or straight. Straight people may find the text particularly interesting in coming to understand why the closet exists, how it has manifest itself, and why it is very, very bad. Signorile has a lucid, provocative style--and each chapter is replete with intriguing perspectives on how the closet and homosexuals have functioned in Hollywood and the movies, New York and pop culture, and Washington and politics. Last is a Gay Manifesto--a kind of challenge for gays and straights alike to work together to destroy the closet for good. In the end, this will probably become a canonized work of 20th-century gay and lesbian writing. It does have a somewhat dated effect on readers today--the urgency for social change that underpins Signorile's text seems overly harsh for the '00s. Nonetheless, this is a must-read, absolutely.

Forced to Think
By Sara Blatt
Before I read this book, I was vehemently opposed to the policy of "outing". Signorile wrote both so logically and so well that I was forced to think about this issue in some depth. Moreover, I came to be convinced by his arguments. I'm still not comfortable with this, but I think he's right. The closet destroys far too many people.

Naked in the Promised Land: A Memoir, by Lillian Faderman

The daughter of an unmarried immigrant Jewish garment worker whose family had perished in the Holocaust, Lillian Faderman dreamed of being an actress. Instead she worked her way through college by posing for nude photographs, and by stripping. She slowly discovered that her deepest erotic and emotional connections were to women. After nearly losing herself in a dangerous underworld of addicts, pimps, and prostitutes, she became a brilliant student, eventually earning a Ph.D. And she became a loving partner, a devoted mother, an influential writer, and a groundbreaking scholar of gay and lesbian studies.

From Publishers Weekly
While Faderman (To Believe in Women) is well known as the foremother of gay and lesbian studies, few would suspect she was the illegitimate child of a guilt-obsessed single mother, that she tried to please her mom by becoming a movie star or that she worked her way through college as a pin-up girl. Faderman's mother and aunt left Latvia in 1923 to work in New York and send back money to their family. They did, but neither could save their loved ones from Hitler's Holocaust, which tormented Faderman's mother endlessly. Mother and daughter moved to Los Angeles, where they supported each other's fragile mental health with a single dream: Lillian could become a movie star. She took acting classes, suffered various crushes and even endured advances by her mother's suitors, all in a blind stumble to find herself, or at least to escape the burden of her mother's unhappiness. While a guidance counselor steered Lillian back to school, she still had to fumble her own way to a sexual identity. Pre-liberation, this meant cop hassles, job paranoia and fake marriages to gay men, as well as the usual broken hearts. Still, by the end, Faderman became a bigwig at Cal State, with a baby and a lover and a gay studies program. Exceedingly honest, endearing and profound, Faderman truly shows readers the distance she's traveled, from "little momzer" to esteemed academic.

An award-winning scholar in gay/lesbian studies, Faderman recounts her early life as the only child of an unmarried Jewish woman whose family perished in the Holocaust.

From Booklist
As for so many other writers, a background of want and trauma proves a vine worth mining for Faderman, who compellingly recalls her uneducated, unwed, immigrant mother--toiling in a sweatshop, wracked with guilt over family members' deaths in the Holocaust, and prone to psychotic episodes, even during Rosh Hashanah services. From this you-and-me-against-the-world existence in New York, Rae, Faderman's maternal aunt, took her and her mother to East L.A., far from the father who persistently denied paternity. There, Faderman dreamed of becoming a movie star to free her mother from a life of unrequited love and drudgery. Rae married and left Lillie to grow up "in the shadows of my mother's tragedy," but then a corner theater-arts school provided an outlet for her talent, and Irene, the object of her adolescent crush, awakened her desire for women. Despite some low-life experiences as an adult, Faderman eventually distinguished herself as a gay and lesbian studies scholar and, in this gripping memoir, as a superb writer. Whitney Scott

Author ! Author !
By M. Harwick
I wonder if other men love this book like I do. I loaned this book to someone then forgot whom I loaned it to. Doesn't matter. I've thought about this story a thousand times.

I love my own mother deeply, tenderly, but if I could have chosen my own mother, notwithstanding some very tempting candidates out there, Lillian Faderman would have been numero uno. I'll say it. I'm a softie for strong character; people who have been dragged through the muck and not only survived, but emerged from the pure hell of life to bring honor to themselves and to those who have struggled for the right to their own dignity.

I bought this book the first day it hit the shelf and read it from cover to cover and wished it would not end. I wanted to read it and I didn't want to read it because I've spent maybe two decades sculpting and perfecting this pedastal I've had Lillian Faderman on and I was worried that she would demolish it by turning out to be a prep school and legacy brat from the suburbs. No danger here.

Everything I know about the real lives of lesbians I learned from Dr. Faderman and, I'll be honest, I didn't think I'd enjoy anything else after Maya Angelou's "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings." I read Radclyffe Hall's "The Well of Lonliness" and was sickened by it's twisted logic and it stamp of approval from kook psychologist Havelock Ellis. I thought Gertude Stein's "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas" merited points for chutzpah. But Stein, Hall and Angelou are no Lillian Faderman.

This book is rich with terror, heartbreak, despair, grief and finally - triumph. It's what "Brokeback Mountain" should have been rather than another story about how a homosexual dies or gets murdered in the end.

I've changed my mind. It does matter. Whoever has my copy of this book - GIVE IT BACK !

HOW NAKED CAN YOU GET? VERY!!!
By A Customer
I'm a voracious reader --- and a lesbian --- and I know the differences between pretty good, good, and *very* good writing. And I'm a staunch fan of Faderman's books, rushing to buy each time this prolific writer publishes another. It's really not too much to say that starting with her ground-breaking `Surpassing The Love Of Men', Lillian Faderman has literally created recognizable modern "lesbian scholarship", and spent a lifetime dragging, pushing, and willing the subject of love between women into the category of "academic respectability". (What university, including the majors, doesn't have its women's studies, gay and lesbian studies, and gay and lesbian student groups? *Yale* has even given her a prestigious award for lesbian scholarship --- which means that Yale now not only recognizes the brilliance of her work, but the academic validity of lesbian studies. How important that is to a group that has been denied legitimization for so long! And how many scholars now owe their careers to her?)
The personal help and self-esteem her work and those classes and student groups have given countless women can never be known.
As to style, while her research is impeccable and her intellect is beyond brilliant, Faderman has always had the knack of being able to thread that difficult cat-dance between dry academic writing and "the other kind"; it takes a *very* good writer to write serious books that are enjoyable to read for the sheer pleasure of their writing as well as for the information they contain and the theories they propound. A *very* good writer; I didn't think she could do any better.
But in `Naked In the Promised Land', something's happened to Faderman's writing. Some major breakthrough. Some evolutionary step. Some quantum leap. It is instantly recognizable. Perhaps the process of writing this book was cathartic. Perhaps writing this book meant getting so close to the memories it evokes for her that it pulled away a layer of psychic skin; certainly there is an immediacy, an urgency, a sheer, stark power in her writing that suggests this. No bland treacle here! Faderman pulls out all the stops, and yet she wields her scalpel with a deft humanity, as well as with a merciless accuracy --- and to be fair, she is most merciless with herself. We are left with a mesmerizing tour-de-force, an autobiography so vivid, so probing and so honest that it reads like a stunning novel --- and what makes it even more stunning is that it is true.
This book is not just another book about childhood and adolescence, about coming out, about coming of age. Like a thread sewing all the pages together this book is about her mother. It's about the terrible guilt of a mother, the terrible guilt and powerlessness of a daughter; a childhood filled with madness and dysfunctional love; the stigma of being the illegitimate Jew daughter of an immigrant Jew mother; hilarious moments and lovely moments brief as firelies; the squalors that are both social and surrounding; the blurred lines between prostitution and almost-prostitution and between pimp and lover; cruelty as a self-defense technique; the sexual predators (male and female) that sidle close on those little cat feet; the conscious decision to use her own intense sexual magnetism *against* those predators and make of it a path into a PhD. A plethora of lost characters, and of tragi-comic characters, too. But most of all it is about Faderman's sheer passion --- the passion to rescue someone and to "make it better", the passion to *be* something for someone *else's* sake, the passion to survive and transcend and triumph, and the passion to have her own child --- but above all and underlying all, it is a book about the passionate bond that exists between mother and daughter, no matter what.
`Naked In The Promised Land' is a shattering book; one of the two or three most brilliant lesbian books in the last fifty or more years. It will grab your heart tight from the very first page, and amaze you through to the very last.

The Buddha on Mecca's Verandah: Encounters, Mobilities, and Histories Along the Malaysian-Thai border (Critical Dialogues in Southeast Asia

The Buddha on Mecca's Verandah examines the many ways in which people living along an international border negotiate their ethnic, cultural, and political identities. This ethnography of a small community of Thai Buddhists in the Malaysian state of Kelantan draws on rich, original vignettes to show how issues such as territoriality, identity, and power frame the experiences of borderland residents. Although the Thai represent less than 10 percent of the Kelantan population, they are vocal about their identity as non-Muslim, non-Malay citizens. They have built some of the world's largest Buddhist statues in their tiny villages, in a state that has traditionally been a seat of Islamic governance. At the same time, the Thai grapple with feelings of social and political powerlessness, being neither Thai citizens nor Muslim Malaysians. This thoughtful study offers new perspectives and challenges the classical definition of boundaries and borders as spaces that enforce separation and distance.

With insights applicable to comparative border and frontier studies around the world, The Buddha on Mecca's Verandah will appeal not only to anthropologists but also to specialists in Asian and Southeast Asian studies, cultural geography, religious and ethnic studies, globalization, and cosmopolitanism.

Review
"“Johnson’s careful documentation of local histories is an important contribution and gives unusual time depth to his discussion of contemporary ethnic identification. Consequently, this book is a valuable addition to studies of Thai ethnicities, particularly the complex formations of Thai-ness that take shape on and around the borders of Thailand."―Mary Beth Mills, Pacific Affairs: Volume 86, No. 4 December 2013

"This ethnographic consideration of an overlooked borderland is a welcome addition to Southeast Asian Studies. Recommended."―Choice, April 2013

Review
"This book offers a distinctive take on border peoples and places. The son of a Malaysian Thai mother and American father, Johnson is at once the observer and himself an example of a trans―border person. It is the outsider/insider tension that makes the work particularly compelling."―Charles Keyes, University of Washington

"This book represents in―depth, qualitative research into the daily lives of the Thai peasants in Kelantan and the dilemma of identity that they face. One of its strengths is the author's privileged access to the social field; he makes no secret that he is part of this village universe and he consequently makes a very original contribution to the literature."―Alexander Horstmann, Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity

He's lived in the community and is bi-cultural himself, so his insights on the Buddhist communities in Kelantan are well-presented and clear. But he repeats the same ideas in several different chapters, and I felt the book was too long and needed further editing.

The Crown Jewels: The British Secrets at the Heart of the KGB Archives, by Nigel West, Oleg Tsarev

This lively account of Soviet foreign intelligence activity in Great Britain during the Cold War is based on documents newly released from the KGB archives, their "crown jewels," as the KGB unofficially called its most valuable assets. Written by Nigel West, called by the Sunday Times "the unofficial historian of the secret services" and Oleg Tsarev, a former KGB lieutenant colonel, The Crown Jewels provides much new information on the activities of all the well-known British pro-Soviet spies, including Kim Philby, Guy Burgess, Donald Maclean, and Anthony Blunt, as well as many lesser-known spymasters and recruiters, reproducing many of their reports for the first time. The book adds unsuspected dimensions to the famous Cambridge ring (including details of Burgess's offer to murder his fellow conspirator Goronwy Rees). It also reveals a completely unknown Soviet network based in London and headed by a named Daily Herald journalist; describes the huge scale of Soviet penetration of the British Foreign Office from 1927 to 1951; explores a previously unknown spy ring in Oxford; and tells about the key role played by Blunt in supervising post-war Soviet espionage activities in London.

Amazon.com Review
In the early 1920s, the newly founded Soviet Union established intelligence-gathering networks in several Western European capitals. Initially charged with spying on White Russians and other enemies of the Bolsheviks, these enclaves soon turned to collecting information on all kinds of political and economic activities in their host countries--and also to recruiting foreign nationals to serve the Soviet regime. The Soviets, write British historian Nigel West and retired Russian intelligence officer Oleg Tsarev, were especially successful in Britain, where they were able to make use of a band of disaffected university-based intellectuals who went into government service and who, in time, turned from coffeehouse revolutionaries to active traitors: John Cairncross, Guy Burgess, Anthony Blunt, Donald Maclean, and, perhaps most infamous of them all, Kim Philby.

From the late 1930s to the 1950s, they operated a spy ring in England that gave to the Soviet Union secret information ranging from Allied troop strength in North Africa in World War II to British atomic-weapons development in the early years of the cold war. West and Tsarev reproduce numerous dispatches from these spies, contextualizing them in a detailed narrative that vividly describes the day-to-day hardships involved in forging a career in espionage. For instance, when the East German "atom spy" Klaus Fuchs had to reckon with postwar gas rationing as a factor in arranging rendezvous points with his agents, he had to confine them to London and close to the watchful British counterintelligence service. The story takes as many turns as a John Le Carré thriller, and students of the cold war will find it of much interest. --Gregory McNamee

Well worth reading.
By F. S. L'hoir
This book is worth reading if only for the chapters on the Great Illegals; Blunt and Burgess; The Vegetarian (John Cairncross); Atom Secrets; and the Philby Reports--excerpts from the KGB files. Many of these present hard intelligence. However, Philby's detailed report on wild goings-on in London clubs (including The Nuthouse) and their frequenters (including Happy Harbottle, Snooty Parker, and Buffles Milbanke) must surely have been a colossal joke at the expense of the KGB, which was always pestering Philby to answer the same tiresome questions over and over. West's chapters on the early history of the Soviet Secret Service, which seem to be well documented, are more of interest to the scholar than the lay person. But I must say that I found the book absorbing as a whole.

Great read, but let the reader beware
By A Customer
This is the most sensational volume to appear so far in Yale University Press's rapidly growing library on Soviet espionage during the 1930s and 40s. The authors-espionage journalist Nigel West (pseudonym of Rupert Allason, a Conservative ex-MP) and Oleg Tsarev, a former KGB operative posted to London-accessed Moscow Center files to confirm, disconfirm, or extend what has long been known, believed, or suspected about the Cambridge Five (Kim Philby, Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess, Anthony Blunt, and John Cairncross) as well as a host of lesser but highly effective agents. Richly detailed and slickly written, The Crown Jewels is a riveting read and a potential supplement to Allen Weinstein and Alexander Vassilev's The Haunted Wood and another Yale volume Venona: Decoding Soviet Espionage in America by John Earl Haynes and Harvey Klehr. But let the reader beware: West does not play entirely straight with the reader. Wrapping up a long and important chapter on Cairncross, he asserts that after exposure in 1979, the first atomic spy "fled to France and completed his memoirs shortly before his death in 1995." In fact, Cairncross lived in Italy for well over a decade after The London Times named him and a half-dozen "mole journalists" (including West) began detailing his activities, often with Cairncross's limited and self-serving cooperation. But-most interestingly-during Cairncross's last months, spent not in France but in the Cotswolds (with the permission of H.M. Government), West himself ghost-wrote, packaged, and marketed the first version of the verbally incapacitated Fifth Man's "recollections", The Enigma Spy. Based on Cairncross's fragmentary notes and his second wife's recall of his table talk, that book, published in 1997, is now widely discredited. Why the mis- (and dis-) information? Why the coverup of West's intimate connection with Cairncross? Could this book contain other such "problems"? Persuasive as The Crown Jewels may be, it must be read with a gimlet eye.
