Al McGuire was the Mark Twain of college basketball. Never was there a figure in the game so quoted and so quotable, on sports and on the human condition. This book collects more than a hundred of McGuire’s most colorful quotations, plus photographs from his life and career, in a tribute that is funny, poignant, and brimming with his streetwise sagacity.
McGuire, a brash and fiery New Yorker who grew up working in his parents’ saloon, played a rough and tumble game of basketball at St. John’s University and briefly in the NBA before entering the coaching ranks. He reached the pinnacle of his profession and gained national fame at Marquette University in Milwaukee, where in thirteen seasons he compiled a 295-80 record, appeared in nine NCAA tournaments, and won eighty-one home games in a row. He was a fine coach who cared deeply about his players and was beloved by his teams and fans alike, but his flamboyance and his mouth sometimes got him into trouble. The end of his coaching career captivated the nation: McGuire wept on the bench as his Marquette Warriors won the national title.
McGuire then began a ground-breaking career in network broadcasting, adding a zest and unconventionality that the college game had never seen. His sometimes bizarre and always entertaining commentary kept viewers tuned in even after the outcome of a lopsided game was a foregone conclusion. When Al McGuire died of leukemia in 2001, the sports world lost a true original.

About the Author
TOM KERTSCHER is a news reporter for the 'Milwaukee Journal Sentinel' and a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan. He is also the author of 'Cracked Sidewalks and French Pastry: The Wit and Wisdom of Al McGuire.' Kertscher lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with his daughter Hailey.

Dean Edwards Smith was born in Emporia, KS in 1931. He attended Topeka High School and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1953. Smith began his basketball coaching career as an assistant coach at Kansas in 1953, moved briefly to Air Force, and then began at UNC in 1958. In 1961, he took over as head coach of UNC and over 36 years established an unparalleled record (879-254) as the winningest coach in college basketball history. He has won numerous coaching awards, including 8 ACC Coach of the Year titles. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983.

Cracked Sidewalks and French Pastry

I purchased this book on Al McGuire as a gift for my father's 71st birthday. As a former basketball coach, he had been a strong admirerer of one of the most unique individuals in sports. Both me and my father highly recommend this for lovers of college basketball, especially for those who tend to march to the beat of a different drummer. I'm sure that even though Al McGuire is no longer with us he will be remembered whenever some young person is making the sign of the cross on his/her forehead before shooting a critical freethrow with his immortal statement that the "Nuns are Working the Beads."

An unusual coffee table-type book

This is a strange coffee table-type book. Author Kertscher apparently did not know Al McGuire personally, and this book is the product of a posthumous project of collecting McGuire-related photographs and quotes. Yet despite the lack of direct personal connection, the book does a good job of communicating the odd combination of street-level wisdom, humanity, and whimsy that made McGuire such an intriguing and compelling character to a generation of basketball fans and non-basketball fans alike.

comprehensive bliss

This book is the result of extremely thorough research by the best authors and scholars in the business. It contains masses of detailed information not previouly brought to light, and helps both serious researchers and the general reader alike due to its easy-reading style and interesting coverage. There is an excellent timeline, with superb illustrations and revelations of all those designers whose names and works had not yet been recorded. A must for all teachers of any of the areas of design in the book, such as Interior Design, Jewellery, Ceramics, Film, Textiles, Fashion, or Furniture. A superlative addition to the Design History world. I just wish I could see the accompanying exhibition.

In this exhaustive volume, he deals with movie distribution and presentation, a subject almost completely overlooked in scholarly treatment of the medium. The first of the book's three sections is a history of movie display from nickelodeons to VCRs. Of particular interest here is the evidence that television was not responsible for the decline in moviegoing. The second section deals with specialty operations, including art-house cinemas and theatres for African-Americans. The final section looks at the effect of technological innovations, from the emergence of sound to wide-screen movies to the advent of home video. Written in a conversational style, the book should appeal to a wide range of movie fans. Tracing the impact of child-bearing patterns, the rise of the suburbs and shopping malls and America's automobile culture as seen in the form of drive-in theaters, this volume is as much a social history of the U. I purchased this book as resource for I book I am writing. Since it is one of the "Lifes and Times" books by Neville Williams I knew it would be an excellent choice and I was not disappointed.

The photos and biography were very helpful in representing the era and the index was invaluble.

The first experience of Shipping To China

Early of this year, I determined that if the book I want to read was written in English originally, I would read the original English version instead of Chinese translating version in order to improve my reading English but also experience what the authors express directly. Some days before, I have bought the Chinese version of "1587, A Year of No Significance" through local e-commerce website as a company benefit. I found that although the author Ray HUANG is a Chinese this book was written in English first. So, I decided to buy an English version in addition.
I searched it on Amazon.cn, but it could be delivered in 1-3 months. It's unacceptable for me. As a result, after the service of shipping to China had been offered for a long time already, I tried it first.
Unexpectedly, I received it today, just 3 weeks after my ordering. Although there are creases on the cover and the first 30 pages of the book, I'm still very exciting about my first experience of Amazon.com.
I'll write down my impression here after reading the book. And I'm expected for the different feelings of reading and comparing the two versions.

I slogged through half of this book and

then I decided I didn't want to go on any longer. Page after page about political shenanigans. That might have been okay, but the book doesn't even tell you much about what life in China was like at that time. The behavior of the government officials during that time at that place were pretty much like what goes on today in governments or any bureaucracy for that matter. If anything, the book shows that it's pretty much the same story no matter where or when. What a stifling position it was to be an emperor at that time - a life of obligatory ritual after ritual. At any rate, my main criticism is that I feel I learned precious little about China, much less the China of the Ming dynasty.

1587: a great point of view which reveals the logic in China's history

The history of China is long and it is very difficult to get a clear idea about the logic behind the countless events happened during the last several thousand years in China. I've read many books on China's history, both Chinese ones and English ones. This book has been the most inspiring one among those I've read.

In this book, Dr. Ray Huang showed the readers the picture of the Chinese people's life around the year 1587: from the emperor's depression caused by lacking of freedom due to the structure of China's politics, to officers' rise and fall, to the common people's mundane life. As the big picture rolling out little by little, the logic behind China's history was clearer and clearer. There was a fatal problem in Chinese politics: the politic structure was premature but the administrative methods to support the structure never grew up and never based on sensible mathematics. Technologies were never paid enough attention to. When the population and economic developed and developed, the naive administrative methods could not sustain the whole economic system any more. However, any technical innovation for supporting the economic grow was hardly allowed due to moral or philosophical tradition. Some officers had been very smart, the emperor had been very ambitious, the Chinese people had been very diligent. However due to many problems, these individual efforts never really worked out to save the dynasty from declining. Dr. Huang saw these problems based on his decades of research on Ming Dynasty's taxing system. In this book he showed the readers how these problem impacted all aspects of life of the people from different classes.

Dr. Huang's research method is scientific and the conclusion is convincing. Although 1587 happened to be a year in the Ming Dynasty, this book in fact provides a great point of view to the macro history of China. This is a book to be read again and again. Every read will help readers to understand China's history better. The author's way of thinking and his research method is also very inspiring. The text is so well written that it is anything but dry and boring. Highly recommended to anyone who is interested in China's history.
