And it was justly deserved. King Alfred ruled Wessex, England 871-899. His country was in a deplorable educational decline--old monks died before teaching the younger monks how to read Latin, and so a great many works were lost to illiteracy. England had fallen into a chasm of bitter feuding between warlords after the Romans left in 410. But most pressingly--the Danes attacked at their leisure--by the thousands--pillaging, raping, and burning. After his three brothers had succeeded to the throne, and each was killed in battle, Alfred suddenly found himself wearing the crown, commanding a kingdom battered by seemingly inexhaustible enemies and mired in despair. His resources were terribly low, monetary and otherwise, and yet King Alfred and his loyal army (and navy) won enough battles to force the Danes to make peace--and he even converted the pagan King Guthrum to Christianity. King Alfred recruited scholars from the continent, he was friends with the grandchildren of Charlemagne, he exhorted his noblemen to read books, he erected forts at strategic points all across the boundaries of Wessex, and he is generally acknowledged as the father of the British Navy. The man was nothing short of genius.

Douglas Woodruff's book brings King Alfred back to life: The events of his father's reign, the circumstances of Alfred's ascent to the throne, the sense of patriotism he instilled in his subjects, and the after-effects of Alfred's commitment to God and Country--the man's spirit echoed for centuries. Indeed, England celebrated the 1,000-year anniversaries of both Alfred's birth and death.

The author includes maps of Anglo-Saxon England, Anglo-Saxon paintings and drawings, photos of Anglo-Saxon (and Dane) armor, photos of gargantuan drawings carved into hillsides commemorating Alfred's victories (which still exist today), and even photos of Anglo-Saxon jewelry and coins.

Claudia Gorbman is professor of film studies at the University of Washington Tacoma. She is the author of Unheard Melodies (a book on film music), the translator and editor of five books by the French critic and composer Michel Chion, and co-editor of the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of New Audiovisual Aesthetics.

a bit dull but informative

I bought the book because I am interested in sculpture, so my comments only concern the chapters on sculpture. Being a regular visitor to the Louvre I often find it hard to appreciate the museum's exhibition of French sculpture from the 17th and 18th centuries. The book clarified a lot of the issues I used to have. It draws attention to the tensions between influences of the Italian baroque and more classical or natural trends. It made it clear to me that the period is to be considered on its own and not as a preparation to neoclassicism or a part of Italian sculpture (this may sound obvious and of course it is, but my way of looking at the works was always blurred by too much thinking of Italy or Canova).
So much for the benefits of the book. There are some flaws as well. The most important of these in my view is this: the author begins every section with biographical notes on the sculptor under consideration. This constitutes a pattern that makes the book a rather dull read. Also, not of every piece discussed there is an image.
Still I am glad I bought and read the book (the chapters on sculpture that is).

About the Author
Robert L. Hunt is a retired Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources fisheries research biologist. He is a Certified Fisheries Scientist in the American Fisheries Society, serving as president of the Wisconsin chapter in 1973. He also served on the Scientific Advisory Board of Trout Unlimited and is a life member of that volunteer organization. He has won several awards, including the Trout Unlimited Conservation Professional Award in 1981, the Gulf Oil Conservation Professional Award in 1982, and a Special Award of Recognition from the American Fisheries Society in 1992. He has published numerous pamphlets and technical papers on trout stream ecology and trout fisheries management. Mr. Hunt, an avid trout angler, resides in Waupaca, Wisconsin where he continues to provide occasional professional consultation.

Trout Stream Therapy

This is a good book although some of the designs are a litle out of date. Dave Rosgen and others have better designs and it is always important to collect data enough to classify a stream befor ework is done. If a stream is in a stable state many of these projects in the book will work well. This is for trout habitat rather than stream stablization, in that respect it is a good resource. Enjoy and get out and do some work. Thanks

This book serves as an acceptable introduction to the topic, but professionals will find its content lacking any real rationale or specific contruction techniques. The illustrations are terrific- they might make good slides if you could reprint them. I'm still waiting for the difinitive professional text.....

For Big, Earth Moving Solutions, not the Ecology of the Stream Itself

I won't fault the book itself -- for all I know the solutions presented are very effective for rebuilding terrain that has been damaged beyond nature's ability to repair itself (Although I will say the resulting streams look very "Disney" and not as natural as what I think most trout fishermen hope for. But I had hoped this would be a book about maintaining the overall ecology of a trout stream: stream chemistry and temperature, bacterial and bug life (the trout food chain), overcoming rock snot, etc. If that's what you are looking for, this is not your book, and as far as I can tell no such book exists? If you are looking for a book that shows you how to backfill a bank cut to stop erosion (using a bulldozer and quarry rubble) -- look no further. Again, I'm not qualified to know if these techniques are state of the art, or discredited, or the subject of intense debate -- but that's what they address. If you want to know how to promote a mayfly hatch in a local stream, or improve trout holdover, that's not this book.

The work draws on a range of sources - literary as well as historical - to explore the mechanisms through which men and women interpreted and understood their social world and their interrelationships. It opens with an account of the dilemmas posed for men by women's allegedly vibrant sexuality and verbal assertiveness. The central chapters explore and contextualize the varied experiences of men and women in their homes, their communities and their occupations. The final chapters argue that, over these three centuries, the gender system was gradually transformed as men detached it from its biblical foundations and began to inculcate identities on something like their modern ideological basis.

Men and women in early modern England lived their lives within a social and gender framework inherited from biblical times. Patriarchy - the social and cultural dominance of the male - has long been a fundamental feature of western civilisation, yet has only recently begun to be systematically investigated by historians. This book is the first attempt to provide a rounded portrait of its workings over a long stretch of the English past. Fletcher's account draws from a vast range of sources - literary, medical, religious and historical - to investigate the mechanisms through which men and women interpreted and understood their social worlds. He explores the early modern view of the body, of sexual desire and appetites, and of gender difference. He looks at the nature of marital relationships, and shows how subordination was implemented and consolidated through church, school, home and community. And he exposes patriarchy's tragic consequences: smothered opportunity, crushed sexuality, and a pall across many women's lives. Yet, over these three centuries, the conventional foundations of male superiority came under acute pressure. Fletcher reveals the depth of male anxiety in the face of women's volatility, verbal assertiveness and alleged vibrant sexuality, and shows how the gender system began to be transformed as men sought to detach it from its biblical foundations and inculcate gender identities on something like their modern ideological basis. This revolution in the entire premise upon which gender was grounded is fundamental to an understanding of the structure of English society today.

Tim W. Clark is professor adjunct of wildlife ecology and policy at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and fellow at the Institution for Social and Policy Studies at Yale University. Excellent guide to how the world works

I have been using this book in both teaching and practice since its publication nearly a decade ago, and have used the theory and methods it contains for far longer than that. As both a teaching tool and a practical guide to managing professional situations in the environmental realm, it is by far the most useful social theory book I have read. The frameworks for understanding social interactions, decision making, and problem solving are easy to follow, clearly and concisely explained, and illustrated with relevant case material. And while I have found it to be an excellent teaching tool, its real value has come in my role as a board member, committee chair, department director, and other leadership positions I have held. It's usefulness is in both helping the reader to tease apart the complexity of human behavior and to develop critical methods of devising strategies and alternatives to deal with that complexity. A great book!

This book provides a seven-point system for analyzing social process, or the interactions between individuals and interest groups. You can use it to diagram a meeting, if you want to waste your Saturday. It's an academic exercise, and the categories don't fit neatly into real-life situations. Just something to publish and sell to students, in my opinion.

Nitty and gritty...for the sorts of research I like to do on works of art from the renaissance I find much information contained in this book to be helpful. I love the way it is chaptered, it's easy to read in bits for reference or as a whole..the pictures are significant..I only wish it was bigger! It's a great source book, I've already recommended it to two people who already have extensive libraries..but they were happy with my report and take on the information here. The author really knows his stuff..I love this book.

Nicholas Penny has brought together the sculpture of the world and tells us the what's and how's.... What is made of and how and he also tells the reasons why certain materials were used. As a student of sculpture I am in a constant state of investigation whether it be in a museum or searching through books and Nicholas Penny has taken me to places I couldn't have gone to without his very informative book! I love to just look at sculpture and if you never read the text you would find yourself engrossed in the wonderful photographic examples of different forms of sculpture throughout the different periods of history. Then Nicholas Penny takes you through all of these different forms in a way that is equally entertaining as it is informative. I Highly recommend this work to anyone curious in the art of sculpture!
