Jim Elledge is professor of English at Kennesaw State University and author of A History of My Tattoo: A Poem; The Chapters of Coming Forth by Day: A Novel; and Various Envies: Poems. A fine collection of intimate and thoughtful essays

There have been several collected essays published that deal with queer folk pontificating upon muses (My Diva: 65 Gay Men on the Women Who Inspire Them or parents (From Boys to Men: Gay Men Write About Growing Up and Walking Higher: Gay Men Write About the Deaths of Their Mothers) yet there is a wealth of insight (and catharsis) in continuing to go this very deep well of inspiration. So I welcomed Who's Yer Daddy.
The book does not disappoint. The essays range from deeply personal and moving tributes or eulogies to deceased fathers (which, as my own passed away in January, moved me) to discussions on authors who had meaningful impact on their lives (often formative years of adolescence where books are the refuge of any Outsider). The authors presented are impressed: award-winners like Mark Doty and Jeff Mann, younger men on the cusp of great careers like Charles Jensen and Charles Rice-Gonzalez, and the editors' contributions are no less profound.
For me, what kept this from achieving a fifth star was a) the focus on poetry (many of the authors are poets) and I must admit that is not my preferred reading; and b) the range of authors could have been wider. Regarding the latter, it would have been fascinating to see a writer of speculative fiction or some other "genre" fiction like mystery or erotica interviewed. It left a slight elitest aftertaste once I closed the book.
Still, this is a book that I do recommend owning.
