Brilliant, Illuminating and a Highly Enjoyable Read

An excellent volume that opens the doors of the closed room that this period in Chinese history is for most non-specialists. Professor Dien covers the period's history, cities, architecture, tombs, religions, material culture, (including armour and weapons), and other aspects of daily life in a highly informative and readable style. It includes both Pinyin and Chinese characters for those who read Chinese, but is not pretentious nor overly-academic in its approach. And the black & white line drawings and illustrations are superb and very helpful (just one example: an illustration of the Northern Qi tomb figurines from just one tomb showing the diversity of dress, headgear and jewellery of the period). I've recommended this book to the students and docents I work with, all of whom have praised it in turn. Don't skip over the very informative notes (which unfortunately are at the back of the book; be sure to read them in tandem with the text), and the list of resources is enough to keep anyone on the right research path for years.

movement as language

This book brings insight to a dance form that remarkably integrates all aspects of awareness: the physical, the emotional, the social, the intellectural, the political. If we view contact improv as a form of expression, as a language then we can 'hear' the conversations between all dancers, unedited, authentic and sometimes disturbing. The book aptly shows that the dance is a reflection of ourselves and our society.

A must for anyone involved in contact

Sharing the Dance is in part a historical perspective on the origins and development of Contact Improvisation, but also an excellent cultural approach to a dance often misunderstood by the outsider. To the uninitiated contact can often seem insular, clumsy, reeking of the 'group grope' theatrical tradition of Schechner, and - for lack of a better term - just plain weird. Contact arouses the curiousity of many, but alienates a great percentage of the curious because of this.
I used to think that 'doing' was the only way to understand contact; while it may be the best, it certainly isn't the only. Moreover, for aforementioned reasons, those that feel alienated by contact will certainly prefer another approach.
Sharing the Dance is filled with a lyric tone that lends to the imagery of the form it seeks to describe. Aside from being a necessity to any CI practitioner, it is also an excellent introduction to a form otherwise misunderstood. Moreover, it provides insights into perspectives of human interaction through touch that shape our everyday actions. Countless photographs throughout the book offer excellent support to the content. I reccommend it highly.

more antropology than CI

I'm about to finish this book but i'll read it again. The layers of meaning have not really settled on my mind. There are many issues being dealt with here, and they are not clearly split. Like a CI performance, it is a big jumble of meaning happening at once.

There are other 2 books about CI available, and having just practiced the form for about a month i skipped them in favour of this one, because it does not seem to teach almost anything about the technique itself, instead focusing in CI as a social process.

Novack states that "In the course of talking to many people, seeing performances, and participating in classes presented by dancers from all over the country, I realized that the contact improvisers constituted a clear social and artistic group, distinct from all the other improvisers at the conference. I began to perceive that contact improvisation formed a discrete, self-defined unit that could be studied by itself and that to do so would not be inventing an artificial category." And then, like your proverbial ethnographer, she goes living with the indians and comes back and tells the story. More precisely, this is a study of the people, of the dancers, and of their culture. It is not about Contact Improvisation, it is about culture.

Of course, if this means there is almost no "know-how" in this book, the approach also allows her to deal with many abstract, ambiguous issues. How much culture there is in a body? What are the ideas of "Nature" and "Movement" that shape our daily lives? How do our values and pulls permeate from the very direct --- our sense of motion and weight and touch --- to the very abstract --- our organization into groups or "forms"? All of those are tangled in rich and complex patterns in the practice of CI and, i believe, beautifully represented in this book.

Being an overentusiastic novice at CI, i must confess that the book also strikes me as overly shy, i keep on wishing she will be more incisive and lay out in plain terms that she thinks CI is a much more pleasant way-of-life than mainstream America, and why, sometimes she almost seems to want to say it. But this is probably a quality of the work, that it tries to remain objective, and it's probably the fanboy inside of me that looks for anything else.

That said, the historical perspective she lays out has definitely allowed me to grasp new layers of meaning in the exercises i had been practicing, to glimpse how and why they come about, and to put words to some of the bodily percepts that the exercises awaken in me, and to put it all in perspective. It's a very serious book about a very important matter.

And, of course, there is also the unicorn. This whatever-it-is in CI that is almost impossible to talk about but also almost impossible to miss. Novack antropological approach does, i feel, bring together most of the components of the issue --- culture, meaning, leadership. Maybe there is still a unicorn to be looked after, but Novack's book at least gives us the vocabulary to discuss it.

He considers salon stars and hopefuls, expositions, public monuments, painters painting other painters, and neighborhood attractions and distractions. The well-informed text combines a tour guide approach with historical narrative using quoted source material. There is some similarity of intent to Philippe Julian's Montmartre (1977), though this work was oriented more to personality and intimate description. It's better to travel to Mongolia in summer than in winter. In summer the temperatures can hit 115 degrees Fahrenheit, but that's easier to survive than the -40 of January. Both are preferable to spring, though, when, John Man writes in this vivid story of wilderness adventure, "brutal cold gives way to sand-blasting gales that can flay exposed skin and strip the paint from a car."

Man has seen these Mongolian weathers up close, wandering around this vast country in search of its peculiar wildlife--a menagerie that includes rare wild camels and horses, mountain sheep, wolves, desert bears, and the elusive snow leopard. With the fall of Communism in the early 1990s, Man writes, Mongolia's economy had collapsed. Mongolians had responded, as always in times of stress, by leaving their cities and returning to the countryside to live off the land. In the late 1990s, with the economy improving, Mongolians were going back to their offices and shops, but with a new determination to protect the backcountry from the excesses of development that had ravaged neighboring China and Russia. As a result, the Mongolian government had taken an unusual step: not only would it encourage preservation by creating huge national parks and wilderness preserves, but it would also declare the entire, vast nation a special biosphere reserve, attracting both ecotourism and funding from international wildlife organizations.

The reader is captivated from the first page as he and his companions set out by car to explore this unfamiliar area of Mongolia. Describing in great detail the national parks he visits and the animals who live there (such as the snow leopard and the gazelle), he relates stories of other explorers and of the nomadic people whom he befriends along the way. Window to a surprising corner of the world

The author's somewhat standard travelogue visit to Mongolia is escalated to excellence through two key things: the detail he provides about a little-documented country, and the insight that bridges Western concepts of society and natural beauty with those of Mongolia.
It may help a great deal to be interested in Mongolia or Central Asia before you pick up this book, but if you have even the slightest interest in the area Man will draw you in completely. While at first you might consider reading the book to learn about Mongolia without going there, Man paints in this blank corner of most people'e world view so well that you wish for much more contact with the country and its people.

In addition to being very well written, the book has a wonderful mix of history, science, and anthropology. Within its pages one finds expositions on the lives of snow leopards, musings on the challenges that nomadic hospitality faces when faced with modernity, and great descriptions of desert landscapes.

This book recounts the long history of "Antigone," the famous Sophoclean play. It covers philosophical, literary, and stage interpretations of the myth and the work. A well-educated literary translator, George Steiner pays great attention to the language of the original, as well as its translations throughout the ages. A must for anyone who is interested in Greek tragedy for the present.
