Unusual Biography
By Daniel Putman
This biography of William IV has over 115 illustrations and images in it. This makes it very different from almost all other biographies of English monarchs on the market. At the same time this is definitely not a "coffee table" book and it is not a watered down version of William's life with lots of pictures for younger readers. It is a serious biography by a gifted writer whose biography of Elizabeth I is a classic work with well over 500 pages of text. Here Somerset tells William's life story in about half that space with almost every other page having illustrations. These images include William in several phases of his life, his brothers and sisters, his ministers and other important Parliamentary leaders, and many editorial cartoons from the newspapers at the time. A few of the illustrations are in rich color and several of them cover two complete pages, giving the reader a panoramic view of Parliament or the King's coronation. Also included is a full color two page spread of Hogarth's The Election, a painting which nicely shows in satirical form what the people thought of elections in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Many of the illustrations and editorial cartoons are historically fascinating in themselves.
The content of the book is well done. William comes across as a fairly sympathetic figure, especially after he becomes king. But Somerset does not ignore his many flaws and she covers the problems William had with his numerous affairs, his inability to stay out of brothels when he was young, his multiple and large debts, and his adventures in the Navy - some courageous, most nothing impressive. She details his long-term relationship with Mrs. Jordan, a relationship unusual in its stability for the sons of George III. Somerset implies that William matured substantially when he was crowned. In his seven year reign he dealt with some important issues with the biggest one being the parliamentary Reform Bill. Somerset has a long complete chapter on the Reform Bill of 1831-1832 and William's response to it. I think it is the best chapter in the book. Though conservative and authoritarian by nature, William agreed to almost all the changes that he personally did not like and was gracious in doing so. Perhaps his greatest achievement, as Somerset implies, was to bring a sense of dignity back to the monarchy after the excesses of his brother, George IV.
The book is at its best after the coronation. William's earlier life is covered with excellent writing but not much depth and that is the only significant flaw I see in the book. Overall this not only a fine biography of William but the large number of richly detailed illustrations let the reader see who these people are in a way that words alone cannot convey. Both the writing and the images put you squarely into the time of William IV. I recommend the book.
