great book! great references !

At first, i've just planned to use this book only for my presentation and would sell it later but after i've got it, i've totally changed my mind.

Tons of Thompson's great works with the explanation how great they are which help you more understand his style.

i have to admit that you can find some contents and also images on the internet [i think the internet sources just took some contents from the book for showing or analyzing Thompson's style]

Anyway, this book still provides much more deeper details which are incredibly amazing to collect!

One man's love of letters

I wasn't aware of this stunning book until I saw it featured in a title I reviewed recently: Bibliographics: 100 Classic Graphic Design Books. It reproduced five spreads from the book and I knew I had to have a copy. Though published in 1988 copies are available but a rather pricey, the pre-used copy I bought was in perfect condition, fortunately.

I was aware of Thompson's work for Westvaco Inspirations but didn't know he designed sixty issues over twenty-four years and rather amazingly he was asked to take over the design when he was only twenty-seven. There are 160 glorious pages devoted to Inspirations with plenty of large reproductions of spreads and they clearly show Thompson's exuberance and joy for type, color and creative page design. It was interesting to see, that by 1942, he was using his trademark style of graphics and type printed in process colors. His Alphabet 26 gets a good showing with thirteen pages reproducing nine Inspiration spreads.

The remaining fifty odd pages in the book cover stamp design for USPS, magazine covers, a long section on book design especially Westvaco's yearly Christmas keepsakes which Thompson designed for twenty-five years. One of which was the now famous 'Red Badge of Courage' from 1968 with a hole punched through the pages to simulated a bullet hole, inspired by stories of Civil War soldiers whose lives had been saved by a pack of cards or something else they had in their clothing. The last book featured is the Bible which Washburn College, Topeka, asked Thompson to design. The sample pages shown reveal a mastery of type design with ragged right text and perhaps more importantly setting the lines with natural breaks rather than the contrived line breaks that had been a traditional way of text setting in all previous Bibles. Thompson's 'Washburn Bible' was published in 1980 by Oxford Uni Press and can still be picked up cheaply. A remarkable publication.

'The Art of Graphic Design' is an amazing book which will intrigue any publication designer and others, it celebrates the life of a great creative mind and his timeless design work for the printed page.

More than a Biography...

This gorgeous memoir showcasing Bradbury Thompson's work for Westvaco Paper is, without doubt, one of the most prized books in my design library. It is beautifully crafted and printed and is a full-color, visually rich stroll through one of the most significant design careers of the 20th century. Reflections from several contributors guide readers through Thompson's experiences at Westvaco and reveal the imagination and intelligence of an unassuming genius. The text is a balanced accompaniment to his work and unpacks the philosophically and technically innovative processes Thompson used for producing exceptionally creative work in the post-war world of publishing. Thompson is not afraid to credit sentiment, collaborate with the other arts, or find inspiration in any source. Furthermore, his solutions are sensitive to the practical demands of life in the 40's and 50's. Deadlines, the value of humor, the importance of family, and the desire for experimentation are woven throughout the chapters and projects. The book is organized by projects and ranges from his Monalphabet, Alphabet 26, and designing the Washburn Bible to purely aesthetic concerns of creating motion with graphics and type. Students and designers who believe visually exciting, cutting-edge design is exclusive to their own immediate recollections of 20th century trends will be amazed to discover ideas, visual experimentation and originality over fifty years old. This is also print design pre-dtp and so the manipulations of type, image and color are absolute technical marvels. The resulting aesthetic is stronger than simply a cool retro "look" and for most designers will be simply ... inspirational.

Wisconsin license plates hail the state as "America's Dairyland". It would be equally appropriate if the plates read "America's Beer Garden", because Wisconsin and beer-brewing are virtually synonymous. The state has given this country more of its most prominent national brands - Miller, Blatz, Schlitz, and Pabst, to name but a few - than any other region. But within Wisconsin, beer-making has been a thriving industry as well, from cottage size to colossus, and it would be a brave person who would start a tavern argument in favor of, say, Garten Brau, knowing that loyal defenders of Point or Huber, Leinenkugel's or Chippewa Pride, Rhinelander or Miller, were all around. Indeed, there have probably been more beers born in Wisconsin than whiskies in Scotland. This book is their story. It is the story first of the European immigrants who brought master brewing skills to the frontier in the early nineteenth century and of the origin and growth of the modern industrial giants. Between 1840 and 1960 Wisconsin saw a rich history of growth (and decline), of technological innovation, of the emergence of parallel industries from agriculture to advertising, of movements such as Prohibition and the Anti-Saloon League, of the struggle between the independents and the conglomerates, and of colorful personalities in Wisconsin's history who enlivened the scene: Joseph Huber, Valentine Blatz, the Miller and Pabst families, and all the others. All are brought vividly to life in these pages. Foremost, however, this is a Wisconsin story: tiny rural communities that became brewing metropolises, pioneers who built fortunes and traditions that are part of Wisconsin culture to this day, the evolution of thetaverns, the growing appreciation of the brewery buildings themselves as period artifact and art form, and the consumers whose thirst for beer made the whole story possible. Excellent synopsis of brewing history in Wisconsin.

Very informative and detailed history of brewing in the state made famous by the craft of German immigrants. Short histories of the major breweries of Wisconsin fill in the trivia gaps any beer buff may have. Includes many historical pictures of Blatz, Schlitz, Pabst, Walter, Oshkosh, Mathie-Ruder, Gettelman, and of course, Miller. The listing of all known brewery buildings still standing in Wisconsin is espescially helpful for guiding the weekend roadtrip. Viewing these historical structures is a great way to imagine the brewing industry of the past 150 years. Highly recommended for anyone interested in beer, from the history afficionado, to the basement homebrewer.

By the tenth century CE, Mount Wutai had become a major pilgrimage site within the emerging culture of a distinctively Chinese Buddhism. Famous as the abode of the bodhisattva Mañjuśrī (known for his habit of riding around the mountain on a lion), the site in northeastern China’s Shanxi Province was transformed from a wild area, long believed by Daoists to be sacred, into an elaborate complex of Buddhist monasteries.

In Building a Sacred Mountain, Wei-Cheng Lin traces the confluence of factors that produced this transformation and argues that monastic architecture, more than texts, icons, relics, or pilgrimages, was the key to Mount Wutai’s emergence as a sacred site. Departing from traditional architectural scholarship, Lin’s interdisciplinary approach goes beyond the analysis of forms and structures to show how the built environment can work in tandem with practices and discourses to provide a space for encountering the divine.

One of the best new books on Buddhism in China to appear in the past few years, Lin's Building a Sacred Mountain is an in-depth historical and religious study of the locale in northeast China known as Wutaishan. It is not a work for newcomers to the field of Buddhism nor Buddhism in China; some background in the period and Buddhism is a prerequisite to getting the most out of this superb study as it assumes general knowledge of medieval Chinese history, some basic Buddhist tenets, etc. (The author apologizes for the length of time it took to bring the book to fruition in the Introduction, but I say the wait was worth it.)

Beginning with the idea of mountain cults existing in China from the earliest of times, believed to exhibit mythical and primordial power, energy, being the abode of immortals, and believed to possess animated and living forces, the author covers how Wutaishan took on a Buddhist identity with the entry of Buddhism into China. Although credited with appearing in the mid-to late Han dynasty, Buddhism in China really got its kick-start during the N. Wei (386-534 CE). It was under their patronage that the earliest Buddhist buildings and sites began to emerge--all virtually virgin territory in China since (as Lin reminds us) "before Buddhism, neither relics nor images were worshiped religiously in China…nor was the stupa a traditional building type" (p. 20).

Buddhist devotees began to join Daoists and other religious figures who sought refuge, insights or visions in these special mountain regions, and by the second half of the 6C and early 7C Wutaishan had begun to be associated with the Buddhist bodhisattva of wisdom, Manjusri, fanned by various reported sightings of the 'true body' of Manjusri and/or the sighting and discovery of 'virtual or visionary' monasteries.

The arrival of Amoghavajra, a Tantric Master from India and his Teacher Vajrabodhi to the royal court in Chang'an in 721 marked the beginning of Wutaishan's transformation from a Buddhist site into a Buddhist mandala with Manjusri's 'five wisdoms' being the stepping stone into the secrets of the site and Vajrayana. The popularity of a dharani or verse with magical powers of protection and transformation inspired by the five topknots of the juvenile Manjusri and their identification with the five peaks of Wutaishan is explained in two superb chapters that weave together the history of the site with the growth of Buddhism in China, the site as a pilgrimage center, many familiar figures of early Chinese Buddhism and such travelers as the Japanese monk Ennin, up to Wutaishan's eventual depiction in the caves of Dunhuang.

Meticulously researched, and carefully (and well) written, this work will join other classics in the field. Thanks are also due to Lin for including a map exactly when you want to refer to one, as well as many very fine and detailed drawings to clarify the architecture of a building or a described mural. The index is almost perfect (it did take me four tries to find the name of the Emperor who during the N. Zhou briefly turned against Buddhism, which I knew I had read somewhere--there was no entry for 'Northern Zhou', 'persecutions' or 'emperors') but the excellent bilingual Bibliography and list of terms and original source material more than compensated.

I read this book cover-to-cover twice in a row it was so richly documented and well, just plain interesting in how it fit together bodhisattvas, the Empress Wu Zetian, Dunhuang, the Emperor Xuanzong, Ennin and Amoghavajra not to mention Wutaishan; it was a work of discovery and revelation that anyone interested in medieval China and/or Buddhism in China will not want to miss. Don't let that be you.

A Different Sort of Refresher Course

Honestly, I picked up this book because of gorgeous reproductions. And because it focuses on English institutions and art--not my strongest suite. But each chapter not only refreshed my basic knowledge of art history but reminded and educated me of the many factors that play into the shaping of the discipline, from royal schools to government decrees. Most interesting was the way the authors researched how museum collections are formed by not only taste and education but also politics and monetary factors. These should be obvious, but sometimes the cleaness of an exhibition wipes away the history of why an artwork was chosen, why it is displayed in a certain manner, and why a museum may, or may not, promote their collections.

basic but stimulating

The book offers a basic discussion on canons of art. Being a professor of Latin, Greek and of Ancient art it is easy for me to point at some (though very few)oddities, eg the derivation of "allegory" from the Latin "alia oratio" when the term is in fact derived from the Greek "alle + agoreuoo",but this would do no credit to the information provided and the sometimes thought provoking passages. In fact, I already used some ideas that I found in the text, in my own class. Therefore: a good and stimulating introduction. Overall, the book offers what it promises to do.

Far More than it seems

This would be a fascinating book for someone interested in overcoming panic disorder. But it is actually so much more. If that phrase were not in the title, it would more accurately reflect the book -- a wonderful entertaining and engaging story about one man's life.

I quickly found myself very interested in this author; being drawn in to care about what was happening to him and how he was dealing with it. It's all about how he dealt with his panic disorder, but the telling is far more entertaining than it sounds. He leaves nothing out either -- the funny stuff, the heart breaks, the embarrassment, the girls and the sex. Often, I couldn't put the book down until I had finished a chapter.

Rand's descriptive writing is awesome -- rich and flavorful and entertaining. It shows that even a calm, studious, serious fellow can have a very lively and engaging life.

In addition, I found his dealing with the racial issues very frank and refreshing. (By way of explanation, Rand took up Zydeco dancing, which is from the Black Cajun culture of Louisiana and he spent considerable time there in the backcountry.)

Overall, it was an excellent read. I highly recommend it.
