Reed brings to light the complexities of aesthetic politics in a multi-faceted exploration and analysis of Kandyan dance in Sri Lanka.

As the national dance of Sri Lanka, Kandyan dance is identified with the majority Sinhala ethnic group and heavily supported by the state. Derived from an elaborate village ritual performed by men of the hereditary drummer caste, the dance was adopted by the state as a symbol of traditional Sinhala culture in the post-independence period and opened to individuals of all castes. Reed’s evocative account traces the history and consequences of this transition from ritual to stage, situating the dance in relation to postcolonial nationalism and ethnic politics and emphasizing the voices and perspectives of the hereditary dancers and of women performers.

There is more to Romans than conquest. This book makes that clear. This book also does an excellent job of relating historical events to tastes in sculpture.

Good, but not over the top

THis book is part of what I have to read in my introduction course in greek/roman art. In this respect it is maby not optimal, the autor focuses too much on works of art that no longer excicsts, and works that aren't that well known. I wish she would focus more on the really famous pieces. What is realle good is that it follows the Emperors cronologically, and that makes it easier too understand the connecton between art and society. For people with special interests in the field, it is probably wonderfull, but with 460 pages it is long and a bit too much information for a new student.

For most of history, the law permitted men to "chastise" their wives. Common law explicitly recognized a man's right to beat his wife with a stick, as long as the stick was no thicker than his thumb (it is from this tradition that we derive the phrase "rule of thumb"). Men who beat their wives were, and are, infrequently punished, or if at all, only leniently. Women who are battered are often blamed for provoking the attack--even by the most trivial of acts or omissions--or for failing to leave, even though they may fear retribution, or other motivations may make flight less obvious a solution than it seems.

In the face of a history that held women to be legally dead upon marriage, subsumed into the identities of their husbands, feminist theorists and lawyers have tried to reconceptualize and relitigate domestic violence. In framing the personal as political, feminists have sought to draw back the curtain that shielded the private realm from the scrutiny and censure of the law. The theoretical and practical challenges, implications, and struggles of this feminist lawmaking--at all its levels--are the subject of Elizabeth Schneider's book Battered Women and Feminist Lawmaking.

The book is organized into four sections, covering the history of the battered women's movement, the theoretical dilemmas of feminist analyses of battering, feminist legal practices and strategies in domestic violence cases, and the possibilities for change through feminist lawmaking, including discussions of the Violence Against Women Act, and of legal education. The issues of domestic violence are fraught and complex, the ways to handle it no less so. Schneider is a law professor at Brooklyn Law School and a longtime legal activist on the issue, and her take is both sobering and enlightening. It is an erudite, well-written examination of law, domestic battery, and the implications for equality, and a highly recommended read for activists, legal actors, academics, and interested lay readers. --J. Women's rights advocates in the United States have long argued that violence against women denies women equality and citizenship, but it took a movement of feminist activists and lawyers, beginning in the late 1960s, to set about realizing this vision and transforming domestic violence from a private problem into a public harm. Elizabeth Schneider has played a pioneering role in this process. Inexplicably rare information on Demuth and Hartley

Weinberg offers one of the few relevant volumes on these two artists. This reworked dissertation took homosexuality as its central thesis, and thus does not skirt the topics biographers of the artists had previously omitted. This book is not a biography for general audiences, but it does consider biographical information alongside societal and artistic considerations in reviewing Demuth and Hartley. By the end of the volume, a reader comes away feeling on more intimate terms with each man than if reading SOMEHOW A PAST or BEHIND A LAUGHING MASK, or visiting the Demuth Museum in Lancaster.

The dissertation origins of the book remain prominent. The connection of Demuth to Hartley in Weinberg's conception is not well explained; the men's lives are described more on parallel tracks, even though they appeared to be involved at least as friends, such as residing in Bermuda one year during a seminal period of Demuth's artistic growth. Hartley seems cast into the role of French Lieutenant's Woman and Demuth is theorized to be more closeted than he was. Artist Paul Cadmus seems somewhat wedged into the thesis.

Weinberg uses a tentative, dissertation-defense rhetoric in examining Hartley's attraction to the types of Weimar-era frolics detailed by Auden and Isherwood. The graduate student stance circuitously probes rather than asserts with the authority of a gay man that Demuth was depicting, not suggesting in encoded ways, the gay venues that existed in Paris, NY, and yes even Lancaster (eg military haunts, bathhouses, certain alleys and lavs). The manual posture, the eye contact, the arousal, and the background activity in the "Sailors Urinating" paintings are depictions of sexual activity, sardonically rather than literally named after tearoom parlance. The author's student status seems to have prevented him from classifying the "Turkish Bath" painting as a documentary of sexual activity-- the knowledgeable viewer encountering the scene on opening a door in the bath venue would know any of three responses are available: ignore by moving through the building, watch voyeuristically, or seek permission to participate. Weinberg would later go on to paint these type of documentary landscapes himself in the years after VICE was published. The authority of Weinberg the painter would better inform and strengthen the book.

Caveats notwithstanding, SPEAKING FOR VICE remains a valuable invitation for biographers and historians to better, more realistically write about these two artists, particularly the neglected Demuth, who made a strong contribution to his and subsequent eras of painting. The 220 page volume contains numerous color and B&W illustrations, making it a quick read chock full of unexpurgated facts, images, theories, and speculations.

Ok for the most part....

I was a little disappointed with the author's hamfisted attempts at interpretation here. The book is full of self-congratulatory attempts at radical crtique, and not many of them hit the mark. He raises some interesting points in his discussion of Hartley: is it radical to be a homosexual artist? Does the canon welcome alternatives? Regarding the canon of great art,is it fair to be always on the top or on the bottom? The author's discussion of the ethics of the reacharound are quite provocative. It would have been more gratifying if he had addressed such topics to the lay person and not the ivory tower specialist. -schwiner

Rarely has the old saw about war making strange bedfellows been more appropriate than in this story of a small 16-year-old Jewish boy and one of rural Poland's most notorious criminals, Jan Kopec. Stillman has found a very different kind of Holocaust story, full of drama and adventure. When Hitler's army invaded Poland in 1939, Goldner and his rural Jewish family were spared from immediate roundup. But by 1943, he had witnessed his mother and sister being herded onto a train and been left for dead beneath his father's body, both of them shot and bayoneted by a collaborator who had been one of his father's childhood friends. After Kopec, Goldner's unlikely rescuer, nursed him back to health, the pair began an 18-month partnership in which Kopec received money from partisans for having Goldner carry out acts of sabotage against the Nazis. His small size, courage and ability to learn-Kopec trained his young charge in marksmanship, a renegade German soldier taught him fluent German and a Gypsy trained him in hand-to-hand combat-resulted in impressive victories for area partisans. Goldner blew up trains and bridges used by the Nazi army and photographed Jews arriving at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Stillman has done a remarkable job tracking down what little documentation exists in order to corroborate Goldner's unique story, making a trip to the region, meeting with former neighbors and with the children and grandchildren of Jan Kopec.

A Fine Match

It was indeed a fine match that paired Morris/Moishe/Moniek Goldner, a man with a compelling story to be told, with Larry Stillman, a man who can really tell a story. I have read many books and stories on the Holocaust and its survivors, many by the most celebrated authors in the world. This book compares favorably to the best of them by the best and most famous of these authors.

Everything about Morris is amazing and told with clarity and great style by Mr. Stillman. It is the kind of book you will stay up all night in order to finish. He has clearly done his research carefully to give a flow and continuity to what must have been somewhat disjointed and random series of incidents remembered by Mr. Goldner.
