Looking for a nice overview?
By A Customer
If one reads this book in hopes of getting a fairly complete overview of art of the early Twentieth Century, they will not be disappointed. However, if one is looking for something more in depth, with various examples of an artists oevure, then perhaps they should keep looking. One of this book's greatest virtues as an overview is that it does not assume a great deal of knowledge of art on the part of the reader and is relatively engaging. However, images are few and far between and not always of the best quality, which I find to be an integral part of an art historical publication.

Courtly Desire and Medieval Homophobia: The Legitimation of Sexual Pleasure in `Cleanness` and Its Contexts, by Elizabeth B. Keiser

In the first comprehensive study of Cleanness and its medieval contexts, Elizabeth B. Keiser shows how this fourteenth-century religious poem legitimates erotic pleasure as natural apart from procreative justification and thus represents a unique moment in Western culture. She argues that Cleanness sacralizes heterosexual erotic play while condemning male homosexual love as profaning the Creator's workmanship and his nature. To situate the poem in the context of medieval homophobic constructions of nature as the basis of sexual norms, this book compares Cleanness's concepts of sexual desire and deviance with those its literary and theological antecedents, including Thomas Aquinas's discourse on temperance, Alain de Lille's Complaint of Nature, and Jean de Meun's Romance of the Rose. Cleanness is shown to be unconventionally affirmative of loveplay and other refinements of courtly artifice. Keiser explores the broad intellectual and social consequences of this celebration of late medieval masculine ideals and analyzes how the poet's class-specific aesthetic sensibility underlies a theologically and ethically flawed revisionist history of the biblical Creator's love affair with the creation. These limitations shed interesting light on Cleanness's relation to its theologically more complex and structurally more sophisticated companion poems - Patience, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and Pearl. This book is of groundbreaking importance for students of medieval literature and religion, the history of sexuality, queer studies, and gender studies.

Ancient Goddesses (Wisconsin Studies in Classics)From University of Wisconsin Press

The nurturing Earth Goddess, the Great Mother worshipped at the dawn of civilization—historical fact or consoling fiction?

While Goddess mythologies proliferate and the public devours books by artists, psychotherapists, and enthusiastic amateurs, it is remarkable that those in the field of prehistory have remained largely silent. Did Goddess worship really exist? What actually remains from the earliest cultures, and what can it tell us? What can we learn about the early stages of human religion from the study of prehistoric carvings, pictures, pottery, figurines, and temples?
In Ancient Goddesses, historians and archaeologists write accessibly about this intriguing and controversial topic for the first time. Considering a number of significant early civilizations—Predynastic and Early Dynastic Egypt; “Old Europe;” Early North West Europe; “Celtic” civilization; the Prehistoric Aegean; Malta; the Ancient Near East; Old Testament Israel; Çatalhöyük; and Archaic Greece—these experts review the most recent evidence so that readers can make up their own minds.
Contributors include Ruth Tringham and Margaret Conkey, University of California, Berkeley; Lynn Meskell, New College, Oxford; Fekri Hassan, University College, London; Karel van der Toorn, University of Amsterdam; Joan Westenholz, Bible Lands Museum, Jerusalem; Elizabeth Shee Twohig, University College, Cork; Caroline Malone, New Hall, Cambridge; Mary Voyatzis, University of Arizona; and Miranda Green, University of Wales College.

Sophisticated but not convincing
By Erik Rodenborg
First of all - I don't agree with the view of the authors. I think that there is strong evidence for the existence for a Goddess cult in the Palaeolitic and Neolithic Europe. But I must admit that this book is effectively written and argue much better than many other authors who have attacked Gimbutas and the so called Goddess theory (cf the attacks by authors like Brian Hayden and Brian Fagan!).
The best chapters is those on historical known goddess cults (Egyptian, Mesopotamian). Here it is quite impossible to deny the evidence and this chapters make interesting reading. The chapter on Minoan Crete is also one of the best, although it is strange why it never refer to Nanno Marinatos ground-breaking work. The other prehistoric chapters are less convincing. Lynn Meskells chapter on Catalhoyok is particularly thin, and the author never seriously discuss the real evidence for a goddess cult in Catalhoyuk. Maybe she has a political agenda of her own - she cites with approval Bambergers view that the myth of matriarchy is a tool for oppressing women and that it is necessary to destroy this myth to free women from patriarchal oppression. I can't help wondering why! When se for example dismiss the must famous statue claimed to represent a goddess claiming the interpetation is "doubtful" without explaining why the interpretation is doubtful I don't think she is taking her opponents seriously. She never in detail discuss the woman figurines, instead she is using sweeping formulations, saying that nothing is proved. Of coups it isn't but there is a lot of evidence she don't want to discuss.
In Tringhams and Conkeys chapter on figurines they also state that the goddess theory is not proved. But that is besides the point. None of the theories they use as alternatives - for example the quite bizarre theory at p. 42 that the figurines functioned as sexual assaults by the oppressed women (she cites no evidence that women was oppressed) against dominating males is certainly not proved either!
Tringhams and Conkey use the method put forward by Peter J Ucko in 1964 when they argue that the majority of figurines was not even female. The essence of Uckos method is to use quite formalistic criteria to decide the gender of the figurines, that is the the presence or absence of female and male genitalia, breasts or beards. Ucko certainly missed that there indeed are other morphological differences between the sexes! In fact, I have tested about 20 people and showed them pictures of some of the figurines Peter J Ucko defined as sexless. Everyone said (without hesitation) that they considered them as female!
In Caroline Malones chapter on Malta she use Uckos methods for gendering the figurines, and she even supports Renfrews theory that Neolithic Malta was a chiefdom society comparable to the Polynesian chiefdoms. That there is no evidence for warfare at Neolithic Malta, that the Maltese culture presents no material evidence of social stratification, don't make her think about the plausibility of this theory. She argues that since chiefdoms in the ethnographic presence are patrilineal so Neolithic Malta probably was patrilienal. But the only real similarity between Malta and Polynesian chiefdoms was the erection of big stone monuments. That a population must be socially stratified and patriarchal in order to build huge monuments is a political statement in itself.... As Eleanor Leacock always pointed out, the so called ethnographic present has been formed by the existence of colonialism and other types of patriarchal influence during hundreds, if not thousand of years. It is dangerous to use ethnogrpahic analogies in such mechanical way.
Shee Twohigs chapter is quite better. She even end by implying hat even the rejection of the Goddess theory could be the result of some hidden agenda. This is undoubtedly true. What i miss in her chapter is a discussion of Gimbutas theory that the megalithic tomb plan in itself represent the Goddess body.
At page 8 Goodison and Morris notes that the archaeologists turned their backs at the Goddess theory at the same tine the feminists began taking it up. But they never reflect on why this happened. Personally I believe there could be a quite non-scientific reason for this. Before the feminists politicized the goddess theory it was more or less uncontroversial. But when it suddenly became the focus of a polarized debate the archeologists, who usually are not the most radical persons - almost immediately began to distance themselves from the theory. It is the same whith the matriarchy theory. Is it really a coincidence that the academic denial of this theory came about the same time the women got their write to vote!? When women was safely oppressed the theory of matriarchy was not dangerous at all. When they revolted it suddenly became dangerous... The Goddess theory lasted longer - at least it was "only" about religion. But when groups within the second wave of the feminist movement began to politicize women's spirituality the backlash was soon to come...

Will the Real Mother Goddess Please Stand Up.
By Stephen E. Arnold
If motivated to read a less tendentious view of the 'Mother Goddess' myth than the one written by Merlin Stone, for example, one must choose wisely. A wise choice is Ancient Goddesses. This volume collects ten essays written and presented in a scholarly fashion by self-proclaimed feminist archeologists. Each essay begins with an introduction and history of a particular issue or site (for example, the archeology of Malta, Catalhoyuk in Turkey, and sites in France, Ireland, Greece, and Crete)followed by a clear statement of what the writer intends to show in her essay. Line drawings or photographs of figurines, tombs, and other objects illustrate the text.(The essay Beyond the 'Great Mother' by the volume's editors, Lucey Goodison and Christine Morris, uses the familiar Snake Goddess picture.)Abundant documentation flavors each essay, and the writers end their pieces with a summerizing conclusion. Additionally, a list of books for 'further reading' amends each essay. The essays are short, focused, dense with information, and very readable. Counter to the 'Goddess Movement,' however, the editorial mission of Ancient Goddesses is to deflect, if not defeat, the colonization of the past for the purposes of the present, and to subvert, thereby, a future determined by one's biology. The essays in Ancient Goddesses, for example, tells us that there is no evidence to support the claim that a universal belief in a monotheistic 'Mother Goddess'unified an 'old Europe' or anywhere else. Indeed, the indentity and powers attributed to any female diety changed over time and from place to place and female divinities, no matter how important, formed part of a pantheon. Moreover, their is neither evidence to support the wishful claim that societies that deify females also politically enfranchise mortal woman, nor were there societes that were by virtue of their goddess worship matrifocal of peaceful. While the essays in Ancient Goddesses may not turn the faithful, they did for this reader provide a welcome intellectual airing, for both the history and the wisdom of their attitude.

Heads, you lose, tails, I win.
By A Customer
When I first began to read the introduction, noting a section on the archaeologists' story and the goddess movement's story I thought - "great, this is going to be a balanced presentation." Unfortunately, this ended up not being the case. The author was clearly biased against the goddess movement from the beginning, and the "fair examination" of both sides was, in short, not.
In an attempt to discredit Gimbutas and others like her, the author cites an example that there is no conclusive evidence to prove that large breasted, wide-hipped, female images are mother goddess images. While that is true enough, there is no evidence to prove they are not. Lack of evidence does not automatically equate to a previous non-existence.
The stand of the authors in this book, regarding Gimbutas and those of her camp, is one of: "You can't prove your theory to be right so it must be wrong. We can't prove ours either, but since yours is wrong ours must be right."
In short, the theories of Gimbutas et al, are not discredited. They are controversial at best and unproven at worst. That they are rejected by those with opposing views is not significant. By contrast the works of Gimbutas reject the views of opposing archaeologists as well.
By the end of this book it is clear that the editors and contributing authors of this book are upset that the authors within the goddess movement are more published than the "authorities" on the subject. And therein lies the catalyst for this book.

Ambientes: New Queer Latino WritingFrom University of Wisconsin Press

As the U.S. Latino population grows rapidly, and as the LGBTQ Latino community becomes more visible and a more crucial part of our literary and artistic heritage, there is an increasing demand for literature that successfully highlights these diverse lives. Edited by Lázaro Lima and Felice Picano, Ambientes is a revolutionary collection of fiction featuring stories by established authors as well as emerging voices that present a collective portrait of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender experience in America today. With a preface by Picano and an introduction by Lima that sets the stage for understanding Latino literary and cultural history, this is the first anthology to cross cultural and regional borders by offering a wide variety of urban, rural, East Coast, West Coast, and midwestern perspectives on Latina and Latino queers from different walks of life. Stories range from sensual pieces to comical romances and from inner-city dramas fueled by street language to portraits of gay domesticity, making this a much-needed collection for many different kinds of readers. The stories in this collection reflect a vibrant and creative community and redefine received notions of “gay” and “lesbian.”

Review

“With this collection, queer Latina/o writers claim their place in the variegated terrain of contemporary American fiction. Ranging from the erotic to the elegiac, the fantastic to the frighteningly real, these stories entertain our senses and challenge our notions of what it means to be a queer person of color.”—Israel Reyes, Dartmouth College

The stories presented in Ambientes are as varied as their authors, but the over-arching theme is one of otherness within our own communities. It’s that shared otherness, however, that promises a powerful cultural unity. By collecting these early stories, Lima and Picano have taken that first step toward transmuting our individual experiences into a larger cultural legacy, and, in turn, opening the door to a broader, more inclusive national identity.”—Lambda Literary

“Ambientes is a timely contribution at this point in history during which demographic shifts are literally changing the face of America. The stories in Ambientes provide a significant model for GLBT Latinos in the U.S., giving them the tools to find their own voice by uncovering a community that has long been neglected and silenced.” —The Gay and Lesbian Review Worldwide

Anthology of diverse voices in queer Latino writing.
By Bob Lind
In his introduction to this anthology, Lima points out the wide diversity of queer Latino writers, with their varying experiences and ideas, which make up the commonalities of the stories in this book. There are seventeen such stories in all, ranging in scope from edgy memoirs of urban childhood adventures, to enduring remembrances of friends and acquaintances one might have preferred to forget, and life lessons learned from a wide variety of shared experiences,

Unlike most anthologies, none of the stories especially stood out as noteworthy to me. The writing is generally very good, though sometimes difficult to navigate for someone who is not bilingual, since some of the authors use phrases and sometimes entire paragraphs in Spanish, beyond the scope of my limited high school language courses. There is no central theme of the writings, which is perhaps the point in illustrating how "queer Latino writing" is just as diverse as any writing, which makes the need for the book far from compelling for me, perhaps reflecting a cultural bias on my part. Discounting that, and my own language problems, I'll give it four stars out of five for the quality of the writing.

- Bob Lind, Echo Magazine

Good collection
By E. SANDOVAL
This was a good collection of stories by a wide variety of writers. Of the pieces that stick out n my mind (don't have the book in front of me)...Horacio N. Roque Ramírez's bio essay is devestatingly beautiful and heartfelt. Charles Rice-González's tale of young tranny bandits is actually revealing and ultimately sad. Ramón García spins a comic tragedy of a Selena-obsessed drag queen. Achy Obejas has a quietly haunting piece in the beginning of the book. Raquel Gutiérrez has a sweet defiant piece about a butch girl.

Four months before Hitler came to power, Pavel Friedländer was born in Prague to a middle-class Jewish family. In 1939, seven-year-old Pavel and his family were forced to flee Czechoslovakia for France, but his parents were able to conceal their son in a Roman Catholic seminary before being shipped to their destruction. After a whole-hearted religious conversion, young Pavel began training for priesthood. The birth of Israel prompted his discovery of his Jewish past and his true identity. Friedländer describes his experiences, moving from Israeli present to European past with composure and elegance.

A Moving Story
By Dr. Barry R. Leventhal, Distinguished Senior Professor
One of the most moving stories to come out of the Holocaust. Friiedlander takes us back to the years leading up to World War II, from the period of his childhood to his contribution to the establishment of the modern state of Israel in 1948. The reader travels with him as he struggles with the memories of his past to his rediscovery of who he is as a Jewish young man. The reader will be drawn into his or her own past to discover how one's memory of the past forges one's present reality.

An unforgettable journey
By Serena D. Gould
Dr Friedlander has created a work that stands above the many ohters of published Holocaust memoirs in its unforgettable poignancy and as a story of courage. His achievement is couched in the most beautiful language, and is above all the ultimate revenge- a story of recovery and meaningfulness out of unbearable trauma. I salute a great writer and academic.

Memories Revived
By Art Shostak
Saul Friedländer's WHEN MEMORY COMES, out for several years now, is a book that will never date itself. Friedländer unfolds, in quasi-chronological order, his coming of age childhood in World War II-ravaged Europe. His recalled memories of childhood and familial losses foreshadow the tribulations--and hard-earned triumphs (survival--and professional success) in the years to come. Friedländer's prose is straightforward so that even the younger students can learn from it.

Forest Under Story: Creative Inquiry in an Old-Growth Forest (Ruth Kirk Book Fund)From University of Washington Press

Two kinds of long-term research are taking place at the H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest, a renowned research facility in the temperate rain forest of the Oregon Cascades. Here, scientists investigate the ecosystem's trees, wildlife, water, and nutrients with an eye toward understanding change over varying timescales up to two hundred years or more. And writers from both literary and scientific backgrounds spend time in the forest investigating the ecological and human complexities of this remarkable and deeply studied place.

This anthology―which includes work by some of the nation's most accomplished writers, including Sandra Alcosser, Alison Hawthorne Deming, Jane Hirshfield, Linda Hogan, Freeman House, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Kathleen Dean Moore, Robert Michael Pyle, Pattiann Rogers, and Scott Russell Sanders―grows out of the work of the Long-Term Ecological Reflections program and showcases the insights of the program's thoughtful and important encounters among writers, scientists, and place. These vivid essays, poems, and field notes convey a landscape of moss-draped trees, patchwork clear-cuts, stream-swept gravel bars, and hillsides scoured by fire, and also bring forward the ambiguities and paradoxes of conflicting human values and their implications for the ecosystem.

Forest Under Story offers an illuminating and multifaceted way of understanding the ecology and significance of old-growth forests, and points the way toward a new kind of collaboration between the sciences and the humanities to better know and learn from special places.

Review
"In a remarkable project at Oregon's Andrews Experimental Forest, writers and scientists have been collaborating closely, looking to the land through each others' eyes, finding meaning in data and direct experience of the forest, deriving new questions from verse and essay. Forest Under Story brings us the gifts of this collaboration. Here some of our keenest observers and thinkers reflect on the ecological reality and human significance of long-term change. To comprehend such change, imagination and information must walk together in our stories. This wonderful collection shows us the way."―Curt Meine, author of Aldo Leopold: His Life and Work

"There are many ways to see and experience a forest and this diversity is beautifully represented in this collection of poems, essays, and observations by a diverse array of artists who participated in a long-term reflections program at the H. J. Andrews Experimental. In my nearly 60 years of studying the forests of Andrews, I remain humbled by their magnificence―and now by the deep, fresh insights of the many writers represented in this book."―Jerry Franklin, professor of forest ecosystems, University of Washington

"To learn one place in the world may be the beginning of learning our place in the world. Like the old-growth forest where they were written, these wonderfully thoughtful descriptions, essays, poems, and meditations offer rich and vigorous variety, exquisite detail, and broad vistas of time and possibility."―Ursula LeGuin

The Man Who Would Marry Susan Sontag: And Other Intimate Literary Portraits of the Bohemian Era (Living Out: Gay and Lesbian Autobiog)By

Long before Stonewall, young Air Force veteran Edward Field, fresh from combat in WWII, threw himself into New York’s literary bohemia, searching for fulfillment as a gay man and poet. In this vivid account of his avant-garde years in Greenwich Village and the bohemian outposts of Paris’s Left Bank and Tangier—where you could write poetry, be radical, and be openly gay—Field opens the closet door to reveal, as never been seen before, some of the most important writers of his time.

Here are young, beautiful Susan Sontag sitting at the feet of her idol Alfred Chester, who shrewdly plotted to marry her; May Swenson and her two loves; Paul and Jane Bowles in their ambiguous marriage; Frank O’Hara in and out of bed; Fritz Peters, the anointed son of Gurdjieff; and James Baldwin, Isabel Miller (Patience and Sarah), Tobias Schneebaum, Robert Friend, and many others. With its intimate portraits, Field’s memoir brings back a forgotten era—postwar bohemia—bawdy, comical, romantic, sad, and heroic.

From Publishers Weekly
Poet Field has been in the midst of Greenwich Village's bohemian life since 1946, when he moved there, fresh from the armed forces, at the age of 22. These 25 short essays and sketches ramble nicely over the years and through his friendships to form a memoir that is more nostalgic than intellectually vigorous. The thread that connects most of these chatty stories is Field's close relationship with the enigmatic, unstable Alfred Chester, a writer of elegant, rarefied fiction who throughout his life and after his death in 1971 has maintained a cult status as a writer's writer. It's Chester, with his intense relationships with Cynthia Ozick, Harriet Sohmers and Susan Sontag—whom he, possibly skirting a mental breakdown, had decided to marry even though he was a homosexual—who takes up the emotional bulk of Field's memoir and whose vivid image lingers. While Field write of his own career, it is always modestly. At times elusively vague but often very charming, this volume will be of serious interest to anyone intrigued by New York literary life of the 1950s and '60s. (Feb.)

Review
“Such fine writing, such style, and also, an eye and ear for what we want to see and hear. Edward Field fills in a big gap and offers some deeper ideas about what created some of the great writers and artists of our time. After reading a chapter, I feel like I’ve just had a martini with Edward Field.”—Brian Bouldrey, author of The Boom Economy

“Edward Field’s memoir vividly recounts the story of New York bohemian life since the fifties, a world that is now gone. With its tell-all bluntness and gossipy intimacy, it brings to life—as no other work that I know—the spirit of gay bohemia.”—David Bergman

About the Author
Edward Field’s poetry collections include the Lamont Award–winning Stand Up, Friend, With Me; Counting Myself Lucky: Selected Poems, 1963–1992, which won a Lambda Literary Award; and A Frieze for a Temple of Love. Field is the editor of the Alfred Chester Newsletter, and with his partner, Neil Derrick, is coauthor of the novel The Villagers. Field received a Bill Whitehead Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. He lives in New York City.

I have a particular interest in this author, in some of the people and the times he writes about and in Greenwich Village. I also like his writing. I ordered this book after reading about him in Diana Athill's book.

memoir of the 1950s and Beat era mostly in Greenwich Village
By Henry Berry
Field, an award-winning gay poet now in his seventies, brings the bohemianism of the 1950s alive. The content is a reminiscence made up mostly of vignettes of individuals Field knew rather than literary or social history; though the impress of the bohemianism centered in Greenwich Village on American literature and culture comes out. Susan Sontag, James Baldwin, May Swenson, Paul Bowles, and Frank O'Hara all make appearances, along with numerous other famed artists and little-known, yet still colorful individuals including the author's partner Neil Derrick. The six-page index consists entirely of the names of individuals Field portrays to varying degrees. Much of the memoir focuses on the sexual escapades and relationships of many characters and how the author and others got by as homosexuals in this era when this was not as open as it is today, yet nonetheless accepted in the limited, adventurous world of Greenwich Village. For Field's position in the local art scene, his wide circle of friends and acquaintances, and his extended treatment of the libertine sexual activity, the work is a basic source on this notable, particularly fertile vein of American artistic creativity.

Kongo in the Age of Empire, 1860–1913: The Breakdown of a Moral Order (Africa and the Diaspora), by Jelmer Vos

This richly documented account of the arrival of rubber traders, new Christian missionaries, and the Portuguese colonial state in the Kongo realm is told from the perspective of the kingdom’s inhabitants. Jelmer Vos shows that both Africans and Europeans were able to forward differing social, political, and economic agendas as Kongo’s sacred city of São Salvador became a vital site for the expansion of European imperialism in Central Africa. Kongo people, he argues, built on the kingdom’s long familiarity with Atlantic commerce and cultures to become avid intermediaries in a new system of colonial trade and mission schools.
Vos underlines that Kongo’s incorporation in the European state system also had tragic consequences, including the undermining of local African structures of authority—on which the colonial system actually depended. Kongo in the Age of Empire carefully documents the involvement of Kongo’s royal court in the exercise of Portuguese rule in northern Angola and the ways that Kongo citizens experienced colonial rule as an increasingly illegitimate extension of royal power.

Review
“A Kongo-centered view of how the country entered into the Portuguese domains, but also how its elite guided that entrance with their own agenda. An insightful look at the onset of colonialism in Central Africa.”—John K. Thornton, Boston University

“The Kongo kingdom holds a major place in the historiography of the Atlantic slave trade as well as in Atlantic history. . . . This study provides a fascinating, well-researched account placing Kongo dynastic rivalries at the center of the kingdom’s engagement with Portuguese colonialism. . . . Highly recommended.”—Choice

Scandinavian Names--the go-to book!
By Ginny Mapes
When we were expecting our children, we wanted to select from some Swedish names. I could not find any book for help. (But that was back in the day!) Now there are many resources for parents to help them choose a name for their child. The Handbook of Scandinavian Names has it all-- a Girls and Boys Name Dictionary; Pronunciation Guide; Abbreviations and symbols; Naming Traditions; Historical Perspective; Name Laws; Top Names in Scandinavia Today; Names from Norse Mythology; Name Days (Not only do you celebrate your birthday in Scandinavia, but also your name day!); Naming Traditions in the Royal Families; followed by definitions, references, and an index! A must have for expecting parents interested in Scandinavian names. Also a great resource tool for people wanting to research their names.
