In the neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, 1959, a playground confrontation leaves two white youths bludgeoned to death by a gang of Puerto Rican kids. Sixteen-year-old Salvador Agron, who wore a red-lined satin cape, was charged with the murders, though no traces of blood were found on his dagger. At seventeen, Agron was the youngest person ever to be sentenced to death in the electric chair. After nearly two years in the Death House at Sing Sing Prison, a group of prominent citizens, including Eleanor Roosevelt and the governor of Puerto Rico, convinced Governor Rockefeller to commute Agron’s sentence to one of life imprisonment.
In 1973 Richard Jacoby began a voluminous, twelve-year correspondence with Agron. His Conversations with the Capeman is guaranteed to challenge deeply held notions of crime, punishment, and redemption. Salvador Agron was released from prison in 1979 and died in the Bronx in 1986 at the age of forty-two.

In 1959, Salvador Agron, then 16, was part of a Puerto Rican gang that killed two teen-aged boys who'd been mistaken for rival gang members. The case fired the media. Known as Capeman, for the red cape he wore during gang fights, Agron was saved from his death-row conviction by Eleanor Roosevelt's intervention. Jacoby was working on a doctorate in criminal justice when he began corresponding with Agron in 1973. This book, which alternates between the perspectives of Agron and Jacoby, is based on 12 years of correspondence. Letters, poetry, and recollections over that period show Agron's transformation and redemption. While imprisoned, Agron learned to read and write and developed acute insights about U.S. socio-politics, particularly the prison and justice systems. Agron provides raw and powerful recollections of poverty, violence, and sexuality in his youth in Puerto Rico and on the streets of New York, and later in prison. Released after 20 years in prison, he was unable to escape the social realities he had railed against and eventually became a crack addict and died of AIDS. Vanessa Bush

Don't Miss This Book

Richard Jacoby has done what writers are supposed to do--he has created a deeply memorable tale through unfiltered honesty, wisdom, compassion and insight.

"I've been labeled so many things I wonder if people really know my real humanity, and how I relate to my environment," Salvador Agron writes in one of his letters to Jacoby. It is just that sort of labeling that keeps all of us from understanding others--and particularly those millions we place behind bars. And it is Jacoby's feat which allows all the labels we might place upon "The Capeman," as Agron is so notoriously known, to drop away.

Weaving Agron's letters throughout his text so that the tale is told by both Agron and Jacoby, we move back and forth in time as this sad tale unfolds, but we're never lost. Rather, Jacoby's exquisite tale telling allows us to dive deeper into Agron at every step in his journey--from his childhood to the night of the crime and that infamous playground that returns again and again, to the death house at Sing Sing, the poorhouse in Puerto Rico, the hospital at Dannemore.

"So much had happened in the playground," Jacoby writes, "that his [Salvador's] going there was a kind of emotional pilgrimage to find some measure of peace from whatever demons had been chasing him."

Anyone interested in children, in justice, in racism, in love, in compassion, in friendship, in the secret corners of our world--the places we're seldom invited--will want to read this extraordinary book.

This book is long over due! Finally the world can see what Salvador's life was really like; how he suffered through abuse and opression, a victim of society's racism, hatred and neglect. I've had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Jacoby as well as Salvador's sister and they have worked so hard to get this story out there because it needed to be told whether or not it offended people. It does not disrespect the victims, it gives a rehabilitated man a voice for many who have gone through the same life. The musical was a nobel attempt on Paul Simon's behalf, but due to controversy and threats there was no way he could possibly include the kind of stories and ideas that Richard Jacoby includes in his brilliant work. This is a book that only comes once in a lifetime and it should be read by anyone who cares about the human soul and how it can be destroyed and reconstructed. Through his words we realize that redemption is truly in sight if one looks into another's soul.

Behind the Capeman

In "Conversations with the Capeman," Richard Jacoby explodes the myth of theCapeman, the myth Paul Simon, in his failed musical, tried to sweeten with distorted facts and sentimentalisms.The reality of the man, Salvador Agron, is far more complex and moving and especially relevant to the current debates on our inadequate and dehumanizing criminal justice system, which has not undergone a fundamental change in over fifty years. The story of Agron is the story of today's prisoner, you and me, behind steel bars or behind a desk. It is the story of the existential anti-hero who dares to step forward and say, "I did it!" even though he has no recollection or knowledge of what it is he was supposed to have done. But by saying "I did it, I'm to blame, let me burn in hell." is to offer oneself as the scapegoat to the collective guilt of mankind. It wasn't the crime that shocked the nation in 1959, it was the willingness to claim responsibility for something he knew nothing about. Jacoby's narrative is searingly authentic, a work resulting from a personal vow to Agron who asked him to tell his story, a work of imaginative journalism, daring to reveal the inner workings of the mind of a man he knew so well. Yet it is also a timeless work on the eternal theme of human frailty, self-transformation and redemption in the midst of ruin. If you don1t read this book, the next time you face your metaphoric parole board, you will have nothing new to say and you will be sent back into the isolation hole to wait in darkness and despair, continuing to deny the collective sin that connects each and every one of us.

About the Author
David R. Foster is director of the Harvard Forest at Harvard University and principal investigator of its Long Term Ecological Research programme, one of twenty-five national centres for ecological research funded by the National Science Foundation. John D. Aber is a professor in the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans and Space and the Department of Natural Resources at the University of New Hampshire. A principal investigator for the Harvard Forest and Hubbard Brook Long Term Ecological Research sites, he is coauthor of Terrestrial Ecosystems.

An invaluable guide to the process of impeachment

'The process of presidential impeachment and trial thereon, culminates in a judgement of the Senate, either that the president is not guilty, or that he is guilty on one or more of the Articles of Impeachment voted by the House, and is to be removed from office. Is this judgement of conviction final, or is it in some manner appealable, to the United States Supreme Court or elsewhere'?
Good question, huh? And so begins Chapter 4 of Charles L. Black's marvelous essay on the subject of impeachment. Black wrote this book when President Richard M. Nixon occupied the White House, yet the clarity of his writing, the reasonableness of his arguments and the vigor of his analysis, still hold true today nearly a quarter of a century later. This edition, republished in 1998, includes an impressive new forward by Prof Akhil Reed Amar of Yale University. If you're looking somewhat bewildered by the goings on Capitol Hill, and by implication, the lead stories on the news, rest assured you're not alone. One moment you hear the House of Representatives' Judiciary Committee recommending four Articles of Impeachment and the next moment you see the House vote to send the President to be tried by the Senate. What gives? You ask.
Black's book takes the reader on a journey in search of the facts relating to impeachment: what it means, where it originated and how we apply tests to determine the case for or against an impeachable offence. Black also examines the role of lawyers and of the Courts.
The author's objective throughout is not so much as to provide the reader with solutions, rather it is to illuminate why certain answers are incorrect. He does this by laying the evidence before the reader, so that the reader has every chance to examine both the evidence and his conscience, prior to arriving at a determination. As in other aspects of life, the book highlights that not all issues are clearly defined, and there is indeed room for some interpretation Irrespective of whether you're keen to turn the first sod in the political grave of the President William Jefferson Clinton, or whether you'd prefer to stand at his side as the United States Senate charges him; Black's essay is lucid, elegant and entertaining. As a contribution to the debate it is invaluable.

An excellent book written for the layman in layman's terms.

Black's book is remarkably relevent to the current impeachment situation, even after 25 years. Though his examples are comtemporary to the Nixon near-impeachment (and prior to his resignation), it is refreshing to read a treatise on impeachment that does not constantly refer to Starr, Lewinsky, Tripp, et al. It is not written for the lawyer, so it has a popular flavor that made it a quick read while still imparting a great deal of information.

To promote its reform programs, the Ming imperial court issued a series of legal documents, culminating in The Great Ming Code (Da Ming lü), which supported China's legal system until the Ming was overthrown and also served as the basis of the legal code of the following dynasty, the Qing (1644-1911).

This companion volume to Jiang Yonglin's translation of The Great Ming Code (2005) analyzes the thought underlying the imperial legal code. Was the concept of the Mandate of Heaven merely a tool manipulated by the ruling elite to justify state power, or was it essential to their belief system and to the intellectual foundation of legal culture? What role did law play in the imperial effort to carry out the social reform programs?

Jiang addresses these questions by examining the transformative role of the Code in educating the people about the Mandate of Heaven. The Code served as a cosmic instrument and moral textbook to ensure "all under Heaven" were aligned with the cosmic order. By promoting, regulating, and prohibiting categories of ritual behavior, the intent of the Code was to provide spiritual guidance to Chinese subjects, as well as to acquire political legitimacy. The Code also obligated officials to obey the supreme authority of the emperor, to observe filial behavior toward parents, to care for the welfare of the masses, and to maintain harmonious relationships with deities. This set of regulations made officials the representatives of the Son of Heaven in mediating between the spiritual and mundane worlds and in governing the human realm.

This study challenges the conventional assumption that law in premodern China was used merely as an arm of the state to maintain social control and as a secular tool to exercise naked power. Based on a holistic approach, Jiang argues that the Ming ruling elite envisioned the cosmos as an integrated unit; they saw law, religion, and political power as intertwined, remarkably different from the "modern" compartmentalized worldview. In serving as a cosmic instrument to manifest the Mandate of Heaven, The Great Ming Code represented a powerful religious effort to educate the masses and transform society.

Jiang Yonglin is visiting associate professor of East Asian studies at Bryn Mawr College. He is the translator of The Great Ming Code (Da Ming lü).

Placing major trends in artistic taste within a narrative of political rivalries, Powers here reconstructs the existence and nature of a public that rejected the cultural standards of the feudal courts and established an alternative culture that influenced politics, taste, ideology and the visual arts.

An Eloquent Scholarly Study

This is a beautiful look at one of the most fascinating periods of early recorded history.
The author, unlike many art historians, brings the reader to a real feeling for the works' affective impact on viewers then and now, and writes so beautifully that the subject matter becomes secondary to his overall sensitivity to art and human endeavor.
An original and eloquent book. In 1991 this book was named the best book in pre-twentieth century Chinese Studies by the Association of Asian Studies (AAS) in the United States and was awarded the body's Levenson Prize. Any reader, even a non-specialist, can enjoy it, however. If you cannot read the whole book, read a chapter... or a paragraph; or a short selection. The writing shines with sensitivity and a beautiful clarity of thought and expression.
The author's next published work, Pattern and Person, is forthcoming, and I greatly look forward to adding it to my collection of this scholar's writings.

When John Muir died in 1914, the pre-eminent American naturalist, explorer, and conservationist had not yet written the second volume of his autobiography, in which he planned to cover his Yosemite years. Editors Robert Engberg and Donald Wesling have here provided a remedy.

Their account begins in 1863, the year Muir left the University of Wisconsin for what he termed the "University of the Wilderness." Following an accident in 1867 that nearly left him blind, he vowed to turn from machines and continue to study nature. That led, in 1868, to his first visit to Yosemite Valley, where he began his glacier studies. Muir spent much time exploring the Yosemite region, Tuolumne, and both the southern and northern Sierras, publishing articles, and keeping extensive journals through 1875, when he began to write for the San Francisco Bulletin and expanded his travels to areas throughout the west.

Mining a rich vein of sources—Muir’s letters, journals, articles, and unpublished manuscripts, as well as selections drawn from biographical pieces written about Muir by people who met him in Yosemite in the early 1870s—Engberg and Wesling have assembled what they term a "composite autobiography," providing brief interpretive and transitional passages throughout the book. This work is especially valuable because it documents Muir’s formative years, when he is maturing away from "conventional cultural paradigms of work and materialism toward new ways of thinking about nature and its impact on human development."

In the early 19th century many factors contributed to the creation of new social relations in the Lake Kivu region - ecological change, population movement, the expansion of the Rwandan state from the east, the rise of new political units to the west and the movement of many population groups and their rural forms through the area. This book looks at the role of clans in the establishment of a new kingdom on Ijwi Island in Lake Kivu. Drawing on detailed ethnographic observations of the social and ritual organizations of Ijwi society, oral data and evidence from written sources, this book shows that the clans of Ijwi were not static formations, nor did the establishment of a royal family on the island emerge from military conquest and internal social breakdown.

What an amazing book! Michael Baxandall brings the period and history ...

Because we have a couple of 16th century sculptures I bought this book mainly for the pictures, so I could compare them with what we have. Then one day I was looking more closely at the pictures and something said, "read it." No, I thought, it will be too dry. "Read it," the voice said. I've learned to trust my intuition (at least much of the time) so I started reading it. WOW! What an amazing book! Michael Baxandall brings the period and history to life—as if we were watching something happening today. Indeed I'm struck by how what was happening then is comparable to what happens today as societies evolve, styles change and economies flourish or fail. This book was the winner of the Michell Prize for the history of art in 1980. It's a classic. Thanks Michael Baxandall! I love your book, writing and insight.

A much-admired masterpiece

A true classic of art historical scholarship and a non-fiction masterpiece. Baxandall takes a little-known, but highly developed form of artistic expression--wooden sculpture carved in Germany during the late Middle Ages and Renaissance--and turns it into a window onto an entire cultural world. Along the way, it exemplifies new approaches to "context" in the historical understanding of art. If you had to read one work of art history written after 1970, this would be my choice.

“When I wrote to you last I was at Madison with no prospect of leaving very soon, but I got away sooner than I expected to.” So wrote James Newton upon leaving Camp Randall for Vicksburg in 1863 with the Fourteenth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Newton, who had been a rural schoolteacher before he joined the Union army in 1861, wrote to his parents of his experiences at Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, on the Red River, in Missouri, at Nashville, at Mobile, and as a prisoner of war. His letters, selected and edited by noted historian Stephen E. Ambrose, reveal Newton as a young man who matured in the war, rising in rank from private to lieutenant.
A Wisconsin Boy in Dixie reveals Newton as a young man who grew to maturity through his Civil War experience, rising in rank from private to lieutenant. Writing soberly about the less attractive aspects of army life, Newton's comments on fraternizing with the Rebs, on officers, and on discipline are touched with a sense of humor—"a soldier's best friend," he claimed. He also became sensitive to the importance of political choices. After giving Lincoln the first vote he had ever cast, Newton wrote: "In doing so I felt that I was doing my country as much service as I have ever done on the field of battle."

About the Author
James K. Newton (1843–1892) served in the Union Infantry from 1861 to 1865. Later, he studied at Oberlin College in Ohio, where he remained as professor of French and German until 1888. He died in California in 1892. Stephen E. Ambrose (1936–2002) was professor of history at the University of New Orleans. Among his many books are Undaunted Courage, Band of Brothers, and Citizen Soldiers.

From Wisconsin to Vicksburg!

It is difficult to rate a book by 5 Stars or less when it is someone's diary. The book covers Newton's journey from enlistment in 1861 to final discharge in 1865. It is a rather quick read of his letters sent home although it covers the monthly grind of soldiering in the 14th Wisconsin. Newton skips many descriptions of horrific content in his letters home that was common back then and manages to keep them clean. His hardships endured through out the many years of soldiering are toned down in his writing. Perhaps, like other soldiers, he didn't want family to worry at home. His attitude towards black soldiers brings about expression that by today's standards would be considered racist. His letters do bring to light the emotion and desire to return home and also helps illustrate the psychological profiles of soldiers close to him. You can never go wrong studying letters from the Civil War as they always help bring new life to the realities of the conflict. This book certainly can bring new insight and thought to anyone looking understand more about soldiering during the Civil War.

Terrific;
First person book written about the nitty gritty and true horrors of war.
The horrors that unfortunately most people don't expeperience,

If they only did I am convinved we would have far fewer conflicts, especially by those of us who live in the Free World....

A great read, I am a former combat Veteran and you can bet I am very Thankful I missed this war.

Great Local history

Loved reading about some ordinary soldier from Wisconsin. Ambrose turned the ordinary into something pretty special. I was able to go to Vicksburg and walk in his footsteps. I even found his name engraved on a statue there.
