Reconsiders the concensus on Rubens as a successful, prolific, and facile court painter who is dwarfed by the achievements of his near-contemporary Rembrandt. This book scrutinizes the assumptions upon which this image is built, and discovers an artist involved with ambivalence and ambiguity.

From Publishers Weekly
A re-examination of Rubens's work by one of today's leading art historians.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Peter Paul Rubens has always been eminently accessible, an artist at ease with the conventions and traditions of his time, successful and prolific, admired if not revered. In this intense study of two of Rubens's bacchic paintings, "Kermiss" and "Silenus," Alpers (Rembrandt's Enterprise, LJ 6/15/88) examines Rubens's reputation in terms of present-day art history, considering the social, political, and gender implications and the development of national tastes. Alpers successfully discusses how the works, by turns vulgar and opulent, are imbued with a sense of abandon, quite at variance with the image of Rubens as the organized, practical creator and purveyor of art. However, perhaps because this work grew out of an earlier study, Alpers too often suggests an analysis and then backs away from it. While it is interesting to see how Alpers's ideas develop, the ultimate product here is disjointed. Interesting but not essential for large collections.?Paula Frosch, Metropolitan Museum of Art Lib., New York

Well worth reading
By Kali
I bought this book because I was researching some of Rubens more obscure paintings. It was a great help though I will admit that it has been written for the intellectual reader who already knows a fair amount about Ruebens, his life and work. Svetlana Alpers presents the reader with various paintings and sketches and discusses them in detail throughout the book. This is not an easy book to read but if you are patient and are willing to read it in several sittings then you will definitely benefit from it. A good solid read for anyone wanting to research Rubens on a more scholarly level.

Seawomen of Iceland: Survival on the Edge (Naomi B. Pascal Editor's Endowment), by Margaret Willson

The plaque said this was the winter fishing hut of Thurídur Einarsdóttir, one of Iceland's greatest fishing captains, and that she lived from 1777 to 1863.

"Wait," anthropologist and former seawoman Margaret Willson said. "She??"

So began a quest. Were there more Icelandic seawomen? Most Icelanders said no, and, after all, in most parts of the world fishing is considered a male profession. What could she expect in Iceland?

She found a surprise. This book is a glimpse into the lives of vibrant women who have braved the sea for centuries. Their accounts include the excitement, accidents, trials, and tribulations of fishing in Iceland from the historic times of small open rowboats to today's high-tech fisheries. Based on extensive historical and field research, Seawomen of Iceland allows the seawomen's voices to speak directly with strength, intelligence, and - above all - a knowledge of how to survive.

This engaging ethnographic narrative will intrigue both general and academic readers interested in maritime culture, the anthropology of work, Nordic life, and gender studies.

Review
"Contributes a new and fresh understanding of Icelandic fishing culture. This is a captivating read due to the breadth of knowledge the author conveys through her personal style."―Niels Einarsson, author of Culture, Conflict, and Crises in the Icelandic Fisheries: Anthropological Studies of People, Policy, and Marine Resources in the North Atlantic Arctic

"Willson shows that contrary to dominant conceptions in Iceland, women have gone to sea, and she explains how the ideas regarding their participation have changed. This book is a very important contribution to the knowledge of maritime life in Iceland. With her vivid stories Willson brings Icelandic seawomen to life."―Unnur Dis Skaptadottir, University of Iceland

"Willson insightfully uses Iceland to reflect larger global social and economic transformations, showing with passion and respect how the story of Iceland's seawomen is interwoven with the fabric of the nation's history. Beautifully written and empirically rich, this ethnography sheds light on how processes of modernization and neoliberalization resulted in women's systematic exclusion from production and power. Ultimately, however, Seawomen of Iceland reveals not only struggles of poverty and inequality, but also a newly told story of empowerment."―Kristin Loftsdóttir, University of Iceland

"This beautifully crafted saga about women at sea is framed as a mystery: not only why so many Icelandic women fished in the past and today, with clues found in harsh rural choices and wage equality at sea, but also why this story is not well know. Willson's findings are hugely important to both maritime and gender studies."―Bonnie McCay, author of Oyster Wars and the Public Trust

"Seawomen of Iceland is a fabulous book, part memoir, part ethnography. Too often the presence of women at sea has been treated as an exception to be explained, but in this book the history and reality of seawomen is treated as fact and the stories follow from that. It's about time!"―Charles Menzies, University of British Columbia

Man from Babel (Henry McBride Series in Modernism and Modernity), by Eugene Jolas

The autobiography of Eugene Jolas, available for the first time nearly half a century after his death in 1952, is the story of a man who, as the editor of the expatriate American literary magazine "Transition," was the first publisher of James Joyce's "Finnegans Wake" and other signal works of the modernist period. Jolas' memoir provides often comical and compelling details about such leading modernist figures as Joyce, Stein, Hemingway, Breton, and Gide, and about the political, aesthetic, and social concerns of the Surrealists, the Expressionists, and other literary figures during the 1920s and 1930s. "Man from Babel" both enriches and challenges our view of international modernism and the historical avant-garde.

Amazon.com Review
Readers who have dined on a surfeit of private lives this past year might find themselves quipping, à la Gertrude Stein: a memoir is a memoir is a memoir is a memoir. But, in the hands of Eugene Jolas, friend and sometimes editor to such pivotal modernist figures as Stein, Joyce, Hemingway, Breton, and Gide, the memoir becomes an invaluable intellectual and historical document. Born in New Jersey and reared in Alsace-Lorraine, the trilingual Jolas was intimately acquainted with borders and frontiers. In fact, his life crossed and recrossed a series of sharp divides: poetry and journalism; romanticism and modernism; France, Germany, and the U.S. After a hardscrabble decade spent chasing after journalism jobs in the United States, Jolas returned to Paris as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune. There he made the acquaintance of some of the century's greatest literary and artistic figures; later, he came to found and edit Transition, the influential journal that first published portions of Finnegans Wake. To some extent, his recollections can be read as a paean to being in the right place at the right time (possible subtitle: Famous Surrealists I Have Known). Jolas is a powerful writer in his own right, however, and his anecdotes shed light on far more than just his own individual life. Even in the rarefied avant-garde circles in which Jolas moved, the political movements of the '30s cast their long shadow, and some of the book's most powerful passages detail his disillusionment with the German Romantic poets and their brand of idealized nationalism. Now being published for the first time, almost 50 years after Jolas's death, Man from Babel is a memorable chronicle of the century in the process of being born to itself.

From Publishers Weekly
Jolas made his mark as a multilingual writer, editor and friend of James Joyce in 1920s and '30s Paris. Jolas worked persistently on this "novel?autobiography?my fact and fiction book" starting in the 1930s, but his death in 1952 prevented him from making final revisions. Although posterity does not remember Jolas's writings, he himself took them very seriously, and he writes much of the evolution of his poetic sensibility as a writer. There are a number of valuable insights here into literary friends like Gertrude Stein, who is quoted as telling him, that "Joyce is a third-rate Irish politician," and announcing that "[t]he greatest living writer of the age is Gertrude Stein." With Joyce, the approach is less anecdotal, given that great writer's taciturnity, but it's clear that Jolas understood the Irishman like few other friends. This would be a valuable text for its perceptions of prewar Paris alone, but fortunately Jolas continued the narrative to his work in postwar Germany, where his view of the defeated Axis powers just after the war is devastating in its total condemnation of all things Teutonic: "Along with his rapaciousness and cruelty the German's capacity for self-pity would appear to be inexhaustible." So acute are Jolas's aesthetic goals and so happy was he to discover new artistic achievement that we may easily forgive his own poems, which he quotes at length and, sadly, to little artistic effect. All told, this is a valuable memoir by someone who was there and knew everyone.

From Library Journal
Jolas is now best remembered as founder of the modernist magazine transition and as the publisher of James Joyce and other avant-garde writers of the 1920s. But in this fascinating autobiography, compiled from drafts and journals, we meet a man who was a vital factor in the intellectual life of Europe and the United States. Raised in Alsace-Lorraine, Jolas grew up speaking French and German and later learned English as a newspaperman in this country. Although a journalist by trade, he immersed himself in the literary world of whatever city he lived in?New York, Chicago, Paris?and was a fluent poet in all his languages. His life in Paris between the two wars and his many friends among the Dadaists, Surrealists, Modernists, and others involved in his "revolution of the word" will interest most readers. The story of his later years as a World War II censor and newsman for the U.S. Army is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand postwar Germany and Europe. Highly recommended, especially for academic libraries.?Shelley Cox, Southern Illinois Univ., Carbondale

Court of Remorse: Inside the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (Critical Human Rights), by Thierry Cruvellier

When genocidal violence gripped Rwanda in 1994, the international community recoiled, hastily withdrawing its peacekeepers. Late that year, in an effort to redeem itself, the United Nations Security Council created the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda to seek accountability for some of the worst atrocities since World War II: the genocide suffered by the Tutsi and crimes against humanity suffered by the Hutu. But faced with competing claims, the prosecution focused exclusively on the crimes of Hutu extremists. No charges would be brought against the Tutsi-led Rwandan Patriotic Front, which ultimately won control of the country. The UN, as if racked by guilt for its past inaction, gave in to pressure by Rwanda’s new leadership. With the Hutu effectively silenced, and the RPF constantly reminding the international community of its failure to protect the Tutsi during the war, the Tribunal pursued an unusual form of one-sided justice, born out of contrition.
Fascinated by the Tribunal’s rich complexities, journalist Thierry Cruvellier came back day after day to watch the proceedings, spending more time there than any other outside observer. Gradually he gained the confidence of the victims, defendants, lawyers, and judges. Drawing on interviews with these protagonists and his close observations of their interactions, Cruvellier takes readers inside the courtroom to witness the motivations, mechanisms, and manipulations of justice as it unfolded on the stage of high-stakes, global politics. It is this ground-level view that makes his account so valuable—and so absorbing. A must-read for those who want to understand the dynamics of international criminal tribunals, Court of Remorse reveals both the possibilities and the challenges of prosecuting human rights violations.  A Choice Outstanding Academic Book

Review
“A remarkable anatomy of selected cases. . . . Cruvellier’s depiction of the atmosphere and characters inside the courtroom is gripping. He never lets the reader forget the human and personal implications of the proceedings he is describing.”—Luc Reydams, The American Journal of International Law

“The most comprehensive analysis to date.”—Jean-Philippe Rémy, Le Monde

“Cruvellier gets behind the rhetoric of the court to reveal its contradictions, blind spots, and day-to-day operations. A remarkably perceptive, subtle analysis of how a major human rights institution actually works.”—Scott Straus, series editor and author of The Order of Genocide: Race, Power, and War in Rwanda

“By far the best and most serious reckoning of the workings of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Cruvellier spent years closely watching the proceedings, and his astutely observed scenes of courtroom drama establish his sympathy for this experiment in justice. But he ultimately comes to question the very idea that the world’s major powers should use international courts to adjudicate the political crimes of weaker countries. After all, he asks, isn’t it inevitable that such tribunals will reflect the weaknesses, compromises, and lack of international engagement that produced them in the first place?”—Philip Gourevitch, author of We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed with Our Families

Misleading analyses on Arusha Tribunal/No mention of judicial genocide of the Hutus despite ample evidence in the book itself!
By Niki
A very week analyses of the issue at play. Cruvellier dismisses the lack of following due process at the Arusha tribunal as a consequence of some "internalized feeling of guilt"! By not acknowledging the larger geopolitical forces at play in the region during the Rwandan genocide Cruvellier writes that Arusha was" a loser's justice", implying by" loser's" the UN security council which had failed to intervene to stop the genocide. This is misleading in so far as the Arusha trials themselves have revealed evidence of a US, UK and Ugandan support for the RPF/A. The US and the UK are two of the 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council.US Congressional hearings, as well as well documented historical accounts have established the link between the Clinton administration and theTutsi-RPF. Arusha thus remains a banal victor's justice. It is known also that Rwanda served as a spring board to invade eastern Congo, so to call the country " a nation so devoid of strategic interest" is in the least misleading! The Congolese genocide goes on unabated since 1996 also due to such superficial research devoid of historical context. Although all accusation that there was a planned genocide were found to be unfounded in court Cruvellier continues to underline " the Hutu genocide against the Tutsi's". Based on what evidence? sound examples to establish the trends
By Danny L. Thoms Jr.
Purchased for a course, the contents are easy to read and the terminology is kept to a minimum. But the narrative has been explored many times in other books as well. It did not shed new light on old issues, reiterated the resolutions for an acceptable ending product but always came up short. The motivation behind the court is great, by holding those accountable for their actions in a court of law. But it is only as good as the partners which take part within the system. The book is an interesting read and uses sound examples to establish the trends which are used.

A Visit to Priapus and Other Stories, by Glenway Wescott

Just as E. M. Forster's novel of gay love, Maurice, remained unpublished throughout his lifetime, Glenway Wescott's long story "A Visit to Priapus" was also destined to be a posthumous work, buried from 1938 until this century in Wescott's massive archive of manuscripts, journals, notebooks, and letters.            The autobiographical story is about a literary man, frustrated in love, who puts aside his pride and makes a date with a young artist in Maine. Lavishly rendered in Wescott's elegant prose, the tale is explicit where it needs to be, but—as is typical of Wescott—it is filled with descriptive beauty and introspective lessons about sex and sexuality, love and creativity.            Previously published in anthology form in the United Kingdom, "A Visit to Priapus" is presented for the first time in book form in America, containing previously uncollected stories, including three never before published. The result is a candid portrayal of the gifted but enigmatic writer who was famous in youth and remained a perceptive and compassionate voice throughout his long life. Drawn together from midcentury literary journals and magazines of the 1920s and 1930s, as well as from Wescott's papers, the stories were inspired by his life, from childhood to old age, from Wisconsin farm country to New York, London, Germany, and Paris.

Review
"'A Visit to Priapus' is a meditation on desire and art, a rueful, comic, brutally honest consideration of sex and its human limitations."—From the foreword by Wendy Moffat, author of A Great Unrecorded History: A New Life of E. M. Forster

"'A Visit to Priapus' is not only a lost story—and one with a scandalous, sexy theme—but also a perfect example of the lost art of storytelling itself. Wescott's observations are so beautifully rendered you'll never forget them."—Matthew Rettenmund, author of Boy Culture

“These pieces are concerned with the timeless tide of humanity—the characters lose something of themselves as they encounter the inexorable, shared experience of birth, reproduction, and mortality, yet the focus on their interior lives allows them to remain individuals. In thrall to the animal laws of sex and death, Wescott’s work is also a meditative affirmation of our mystic, fragile sentience.”—Rain Taxi

"Waiting to be a Good Place"
By Eclectic Reader
The famous creator of A Room with a View (1908), Howard's End (1910), and A Passage to India (1924), E. M. Forster, kept his homosexuality a public secret and a classic novel of his, Maurice (written in 1913-1914) which dealt with the love between two men from different classes was also kept from the public until its posthumous publication in 1971. The manuscript was circulated among Forster's friends who knew of Forster's sexuality and one of those friends was fellow writer Glenway Wescott (1901-1987). Like Forster, Wescott was a successful novelist with works such as The Apple of the Eye (1924), The Grandmothers (winning him the Harper Book Prize in 1927), The Pilgrim Hawk: A Love Story (considered to be his masterpiece; 1940), Apartment in Athens (1945), essays, memoirs, and a series of short stories, Goodbye, Wisconsin (1928). Also like Forster, Wescott was secretly gay with a long-time partner, Monroe Wheeler. Wescott, too, wrote a story, "A Visit to Priapus," which he kept purposely unpublished because of the gay content until after his death. Ironically, it was Wescott and writer Christopher Isherwood who saw to it that Forster's hidden masterpiece, Maurice, finally saw publication.

A Visit to Priapus and Other Stories (with a Foreword by Wendy Moffat and an invaluable Introduction by the editor, Jerry Rosco) has just been given its first U.S. publication. Some of the stories have been published in various publications (mainly in the UK), but some of the material has never been printed before. All of the pieces are very autobiographical in nature with gay content that varies from subtle to explicit to non-existent. The stories reflect a very complex style of writing most immediately comparable to the later works of William Faulkner (1897-1962).

The first two stories in the collection are mere vignettes. "Adolescence" describes the joy of "two youngsters" getting ready for a masquerade party in which one, fifteen-year-old Philip, a somewhat naïve and innocent farm boy, is convinced to dress up as a girl. At the party he doesn't know if his convincing disguise is responsibility for the shunning he receives or if others have guessed his identity and are shocked by what he has done. His loneliness and humiliation apparently is a preview of things to come in his life as a gay man. "Mr. Auerbach in Paris" is a mere shadow of a story telling about a young male secretary working for an elderly, wealthy, and philanthropic man who "little by little" is going blind. The story reveals the gullibility so many in Europe and America in the late 1930s had in regards to Germany and the force that was soon to descend upon the world.

It isn't until the third story, "The Babe's Bed" (1930) that readers get a much more full-bodied tale which tells of a young writer returning from Europe to visit his impoverished family in the United States. Wescott fills the pages of his story with more descriptive gloom about life during the Great Depression than one is likely to find in any other work aside from the far lengthier and better known The Grapes of Wrath (1939) by John Steinbeck.

The collection's title story, "A Visit to Priapus" is close to novella length and certainly the most sexual tale in the collection. Distraught with the threesome in which he lives because he is receiving the least love and sexual attention, Alwyn Tower, thirty-eight and "sex-starved," is encouraged to visit a closeted, gay artist by the name of Hawthorne on a trip to a small New England Town. The mediocre (at best) artist is infamous for two things: desperately wanting critical attention (and praise) for his paintings and "the phallus of a demi-god, [a] nightmarish bludgeon." In lesser hands than Wescott's, the story would simply have descended to the level of pornography. Instead, the author gives readers an intense psychological tale and by the story's end, the narrator has learned as much about himself as he has the peculiar Hawthorne.

"The Stallions: Pages from an Unfinished Story" is another piece of autobiography in which Wescott in startling lyrical prose details the mating of two sets of stallions and mares for mating--hardly an everyday topic or depiction. "The Frenchman Six Feet Three" has Wescott once again calling upon his pre-WWII experiences in Europe. The narrator meets a tall Frenchman by the name of Roger Gaumond who is "summoned to do reserve military service for a fortnight." The utterly ill-fitting uniform he receives to wear when he reports to duty serves as a both a metaphor and foreshadowing of the lack of readiness and competence of the French military in face of the soon to be all too apparent military might of the Third Reich.

"The Love of New York" is the best example from A Visit to Priapus and Other Stories of how closely related Wescott's fiction can be from his non-fiction in both tone and substance with the story reading much more like an essay than a story. The tale extolling the beauty of Manhattan in the 1940s, in particular, contains an ominous, prophetic reference: "If anyone wanted to alter the country at one fell swoop, let us say by bombing, this would be the place to swoop." "An Example of Suicide" is likewise as much an essay as a work of fiction. Wescott creates a frame, coming across a crowd of "upward-gazing people" spending hours watching a young man on the edge of a seventeenth floor of Hotel Gotham trying to decide whether or not to jump to his death. Wescott cuts away from the action to deliberate on the topic of suicide and only after giving voice to his ruminations on suicide does Wescott return to the fate of the young man on the ledge.

"The Odor of Rosemary" has an elderly Wescott reminiscing about a 1935 ocean voyage and may be the most lyrical story in the collection.

Rosco includes two genuine essays in the collection: "The Valley Submerged" about Wescott's home being buried under water to make way for a reservoir which includes additional text that Wescott added when he was seventy-seven years old and a very intriguing (and moving) essay about Wescott meeting the French writer Colette in "A Call on Collette and Goudeket."

Throughout the tales in A Visit to Priapus and Other Stories Wescott utilizes contradictory images; sometimes involving the characters of people and frequently using vastly contrasting adjectives to describe the very same thing. Interestingly, throughout A Visit to Priapus and Other Stories Wescott is the thorough, keen observer of others and of life, but for such autobiographical works, the reader never really gets a good portrayal of Wescott himself. There is a certain air of mystery to the world of Glenway Wescott. It is as if in nothing is a given; no beauty without a taint of some sort. It may not be reading too much into his descriptions to state that his hidden sexual orientation led to the formation of such a worldly outlook and to the hidden Wescott of his autobiographical works.

A Visit to Priapus and Other Stories includes material written from when Wescott was only twenty-two up to the seventies. His youthful, "experimental story" entitled "Sacre de Printemps" in which he visits a gay male couple is written in the same complex style that makes the story instantly recognizable as coming from Wescott.

Wescott's writing is much like that of a poet. Every word used appears carefully chosen. Every detail and description, filled with as many paradoxical words as they may be, are as carefully chiseled as a block of marble under the hands of a sculptor. A Visit to Priapus and Other Stories is like a fine wine--meant to be sipped and not consumed in one sitting and contains a wealth of riches for the thoughtful reader.

Surprisingly topical
By john francis leonard
More than one of these stories have a gay sensibility of sorts, but it is A Visit to Priapus that rings exceptionally true to the modern reader. To put it bluntly the gay protagonist (clearly Westott himself) goes in search of a man. Specifically one with an exceptional member. In his day, without grinder and the internet or even really gay bars, it took a recommendation, a written invitation, and long bus trip to meet this man, but needs must. And what rings true to me in a topical fashion this "trick" turns out to be more work than pleasure. And really can't all of us identify? It is the exceptional prose, it is the vivid description of time and place that sends this this modern fable into the extraordinary. The more things change, the more they remain the same.

20th Century Excellence
By T. Scott White
Glenway Wescott is one of the most under-appreciated writers of the 20th Century. His writing is like poetry with a sensibility matched by few others.

River of a Thousand Tales
By Martin D. Gibbs
August Derleth was a contemporary of HP Lovecraft, and while he wrote a hundred or so books, and countless stories in pulp magazines, his home was Wisconsin. And he loved and wrote most passionately about his home state (and mine). This book is amazingly well written and fully researched; Derleth blends folklore and history so expertly that you really get a sense of being there.

I was not raised in the Wisconsin River region, rather in the western part of the state. Still, Derleth's descriptions and anecdotes are so vivid that I can smell the murky and musty water along the river's banks. One can hear the lumbermen barking out commands as they ride a flotilla of logs down a wild current, and the cry of the whippoorwills at night.

His detail of the senseless and ongoing feud between Sauk City and Prairie du Sac was a real treasure to read. And it is only one of several stories that will keep you reading this treasure of a book. Whether you are from Wisconsin or not, this book is one that I would definitely recommend to a history buff; Derleth's style is accessible and flows from page to page with ease.

It does have a very regional focus and so it gets 4 stars instead of 5, but to me it really is 5.

Additional Info: On my version on page 235:

"'for a period of two years .... until my fight was finally successful, Wisconsin was a corrupted stated, governed not by the people but by a group of private and corporate interests.'" This was the late 1800s... a very telling statement...

Our Deep Gossip: Conversations with Gay Writers on Poetry and Desire, by Christopher Hennessy

From Walt Whitman forward, a century and a half of radical experimentation and bold speech by gay and lesbian poets has deeply influenced the American poetic voice. In Our Deep Gossip, Christopher Hennessy interviews eight gay men who are celebrated American poets and writers: Edward Field, John Ashbery, Richard Howard, Aaron Shurin, Dennis Cooper, Cyrus Cassells, Wayne Koestenbaum, and Kazim Ali. The interviews showcase the complex ways art and life intertwine, as the poets speak about their early lives, the friends and communities that shaped their work, the histories of gay writers before them, how sex and desire connect with artistic production, what coming out means to a writer, and much more. While the conversations here cover almost every conceivable topic of interest to readers of poetry and poets themselves, the book is an especially important, poignant, far-reaching, and enduring document of what it means to be a gay artist in twentieth-and early twenty-first-century America.

"Our Deep Gossip isn't just smart. It isn't just a color-rich collection of interviews with eight amazing gay poets. And it isn't just a compelling record of their personalities, processes, and engagement with desire. It's a landmark in which Hennessy never misses the mark."—Jim Elledge, editor of Who's Yer Daddy

“Hennessy gives the poets generous space to speak, and in this space the book succeeds.”—Publishers Weekly

“Hennessy successfully presents readers with a snapshot of modern gay poetry while placing individual poets within the wider American literary landscape.”—Library Journal

“Passionate about the beauty of poetry, Hennessy presents eight master craftsmen at the top of their game. . . . His book will delight readers interested in how a poet’s mind works, and the many places a literary artist draws inspiration from.”—Bay Area Reporter

A Worthy Education
By Bryan Borland
My husband and I have been carrying around Our Deep Gossip for weeks. When one of us puts it down, the other of us grabs it. It's been a worthy education for us, but far from academic, this book is like sitting at the breakfast table and listening to people who love poetry discuss its merits, intent, causes, and magic. Anyone who enjoys poetry will enjoy this book. Anyone who calls himself or herself a poet simply must read this book. At times, Hennessy, who did his homework to fuel these talks along, sounds like an excited boy in the best of ways as he communicates with people he clearly admires. His passion for poetry, and for these poets, is evident. In turn, the poets respond to his questions with equal enthusiasm. Highly, highly, highly recommended. Christopher Hennessy is as much a gift to the world of poetry as are the fine poets he interviews here.

Recommended for anyone who writes
By Duncan Armstrong
This is a niche market or is it? gay poets talking - do that have anything different to say from heterosexual poets? In many cases not always but in every case yes. After all nearly every poet hides something from heir peers till they are ready to reveal their true selves. A great range or writers from various backgrounds share frankly and pointedly their struggles and political motivations. I would have enjoyed a selection of the writings of these writers as a companion to this book. Highly recommended for anyone who writes.

Review
"We reached the old wolf in time to watch a fierce green fire dying in her eyes. I realized then, and have known ever since, that there was something new to me in those eyes--something known only to her and to the mountain. I was young then, and full of trigger-itch; I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer, that no wolves would mean hunters' paradise. But after seeing the green fire die, I sensed that neither the wolf nor the mountain agreed with such a view."--Aldo Leopold

unique and clear-headed thinking
By Jeffrey L. Seglin
In The Conference Board's magazine, "Across the Board," in a Nov/Dec 2000 article on the best business books read over the past year, I wrote:
"Over the past couple of years, I must have read 10 to 20 management books every month. Unfortunately, before long, many of these titles start reading the same, hoping to capitalize on the management trend of the moment. But every once in a while a book comes along that includes unique and clear-headed thinking and writing. When I was working on an article about environmental ethics in business, I came across a new collection of the writings of Aldo Leopold, the legendary conservationist of the 1930s and 1940s perhaps best known for A Sand County Almanac. Edited by Curt Meine and Richard L. Knight, The Essential Aldo Leopold: Quotations and Commentaries is not, strictly speaking, a business book, but contained here in many previously unpublished observations are the thoughts and ideas of a natural (in all senses of the word) manager. Leopold was a rare combination of someone who saw the need for conserving nature, but who also understood and encouraged experiencing the beauty and functionality of the outdoors." --Across the Board, Nov/Dec 2000
One of my favorite quotes of Leopold's from this collection:
"Relegating conservation to government is like relegating virtue to the Sabbath. Turns over to professionals what should be daily work of amateurs."
