After an enforced wartime exile in Geneva in a miserable hotel, he returned to Paris and to the same broken-down little shed of a studio behind Montparnasse where he struggled to realize his pared-down vision of mankind and which became a magnet for many of the great artists and writers of the time (from Picasso and Braque to Balthus, from Breton and Genet to Beckett). Peppiatt prefaces his story with a poignant, personal narrative of how as a young man he arrived in Paris with an introduction from Francis Bacon to Giacometti; the encounter was forestalled by the artist’s very recent death, but Peppiatt instead got to know the key people in Giacometti’s world. He explains how the studio, now dismantled, seems to be both Giacometti’s most important artwork, encompassing countless complete or unfinished works, and the archive of years of struggle. With Giacometti’s death, it became his greatest achievement, containing as it did the traces of a lifetime’s search for truth. This vivid exploration of one of the most evocative and influential spaces in 20th-century art connects us with both a unique career and an entire, outstanding moment in French culture.

Nothing New for Giacometti Fans

If you have an interest in--and know nothing about--the brilliant artist Alberto Giacometti, this book could be valuable, but for those familiar with Giacometti's work, this book doesn't have much to offer. With the suggestion of the title being that we would see inside the studio, what we get is tired photos that have been used many times in other books about the artist. The indispensable volume on Giacometti is edited by Reinhold Hohl titled GIACOMETTI: A BIOGRAPHY IN PICTURES, published by Hatje in 1998. Michael Peppiatt's book pales in comparison. Also James Lord's biography is worth reading. Again Peppiatt offers very little new by way of insights or information. Very, very, very disappointing.

buy it for the photos

The text is not bad, but the real jewels are the photos (nicely reproduced at the right scale) of the most famous, broken-down studio in postwar Paris. This tiny, hovel, a wreck of a space, which Giacometti moved into as a poor young artist and never left, has a grandeur and mystery that the text and photos seem to covey well. The book is proof that some of the most significant art of the 20th century was produced in one of its humblest spaces. He never traded up. There is a lesson here for all artists-- not the working mechanics of the studio, but the purity of it. Peppiatt's text is best when Giacometti's voice appears -- albeit from previously published documents-- and then the book is simply thrilling.

More gossip than insight

Yale publishes many excellent books, but this is not one of them. This book mostly rehashes the less seemly aspects of Giacometti's personal life, with no evident new insight into the meaning or importance of his art. The book is not well written, and the photographs are poorly reproduced. I am not sure why Yale published this title.
