Penny (National Gallery, London) has produced an unusual and very interesting book. He considers sculpture in relation to its medium: the benefits and limitations of various materials as they influence the final product. Focusing chiefly on the arts of the West, he includes chapters on different types of stone, wood, ivory, and plastic. Penny is an observant and careful writer who has closely examined his subject. He writes clearly and well for all audiences, and the plates are generally very good or better. Highly recommended.

Nitty and gritty...for the sorts of research I like to do on works of art from the renaissance I find much information contained in this book to be helpful. I love the way it is chaptered, it's easy to read in bits for reference or as a whole..the pictures are significant..I only wish it was bigger! It's a great source book, I've already recommended it to two people who already have extensive libraries..but they were happy with my report and take on the information here. The author really knows his stuff..I love this book.

Nicholas Penny has brought together the sculpture of the world and tells us the what's and how's.... What is made of and how and he also tells the reasons why certain materials were used. As a student of sculpture I am in a constant state of investigation whether it be in a museum or searching through books and Nicholas Penny has taken me to places I couldn't have gone to without his very informative book! I love to just look at sculpture and if you never read the text you would find yourself engrossed in the wonderful photographic examples of different forms of sculpture throughout the different periods of history. Then Nicholas Penny takes you through all of these different forms in a way that is equally entertaining as it is informative. I Highly recommend this work to anyone curious in the art of sculpture!
