“LeMasters’ book is a valuable and popularly written source of information on the attitudes of working class men and women. Highly recommended.”—Library Journal
Blue-Collar Aristocrats is a major statement about a group of Americans too little understood and too long ignored by by the country's decision- and policy-makers. Thanks to the work of E. E. LeMasters, we now have a rare and human insight into the lives, feelings, attitudes, and problems of America's blue-collar aristocrats—one that has the potential both to add to our knowledge and to contribute toward solutions to some of our nation's broadest social problems.
“LeMasters has given us a brilliant sketch of what the well-developed unions have created—the average American. He’s great.”—West Coast Review of Books
"This is not a dry sociogram. The quality of life of these people comes with the smell of smoke and beer, the sounds of boisterous laughter above a blaring juke box and the clicking of the pool balls."—New York Times

A Missed Opportunity for the Anti War Movement During the War in Vietnam
By John Engelman
One who reads Blue-Collar Aristocrats can see how the anti war movement during the War in Vietnam could have been more effective. Blue-Collar Aristocrats was written by a sociology professor at the University of Wisconsin. During the late 1960's and early 1970's he patronized a working class tavern near where he lived that was called the Oasis. He talked to the patrons. What is more is important is that he listened. The book consists of opinions they expressed about topics like their jobs, their marriages, politics, race, and religion.
Most of the patrons at the Oasis were men, although Professor LeMasters talked to a few women too.
Most of the men who patronized this tavern were middle aged white skilled blue collar workers, usually in construction trades. These were men who remembered the Great Depression. They remembered that life for them and those they knew began to improve almost as soon as Franklin Roosevelt was inaugurated. Most belonged to unions, and realized that unions made their lives better. Most were military veterans. Many had fought in World War II, the Korean War, or both.
By the late 1960's most of these men were becoming disenchanted with the Democratic Party. It is important for liberals to acknowledge that they had reasons for their disenchantment. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the War on Poverty had been followed by five years of black ghetto rioting. From 1960 to 1970 the crime rate doubled.
Protestors against the War in Vietnam often expressed anti American and pro Communist sentiments. Student protesters who engaged in disruptive and sometimes violent behavior offended those who had not had the opportunity to go to college, but whose taxes subsidized university education.
None of the women Professor LeMasters talked to sympathized with the women's liberation movement. The complaints of that movement were incomprehensible to the men at the bar, and offensive to them.
Nevertheless, these people did not like the War in Vietnam. They did not believe that Vietnam was important to America's economy or security. They did not think the government of South Vietnam was worth American lives. As the years passed, veterans of the War in Vietnam began to patronize the Oasis. None of them had anything good to say about the war. They thought their sacrifices had been in vain.
Of course, these were only the patrons of one working class tavern. Professor LeMaster's accounts lack the accuracy of a public opinion survey. Nevertheless, they seem authentic. I have worked on construction sites and patronized blue collar bars. These were men I recognize.
It was unfortunate for the anti war movement, and for the Vietnamese who suffered from the American war effort, that the anti war movement became associated in the minds of most Americans with decadent social changes. It is unfortunate that the American left did not understand the legitimacy of white backlash.
The message of the anti war movement should have been, "Your son does not need to risk his life in Vietnam." All too often the message seemed to be, "If your son fights in Vietnam he deserves to die there."
