Thomas Jefferson spent five years in Paris, from 1784 to 1789, serving as the representative of a struggling new nation. In this entertaining, scholarly chronicle of those years, we're treated to an account of how the nights spent among the Paris intellectuals influenced Jefferson's thought, and we get a vivid taste of the social whirl in that great European city. William Howard Adams, a leading Jefferson scholar for 25 years, quotes extensively from Jefferson's letters and other writings, and does a commendable job of describing the scenes in which Jefferson would have found himself.

In the wake of the recent flood of books on Jefferson, Adams (International Ctr. for Jefferson Studies) presents no findings that will surprise specialists; rather, he offers a judicious, balanced overview based on thorough grounding in primary sources as well as the latest books on Jefferson. Adams is at his best in giving vivid thumbnail sketches of personalities like the Marquis de Lafayette and in his expert descriptions of Paris buildings and neighborhoods. In contrast to the astringent tone of some recent works, both those for and against Jefferson (e.g., Conor Cruise O'Brien's The Long Affair, LJ 10/15/96), Adams's touch is light. He clearly admires Jefferson while avoiding hagiography, demonstrating that Jefferson's five years in France (1784-89) helped to obliterate the last traces of provincialism in the Virginian and further implanted in him the ideals of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution. As American minister to the court of France prior to joining President Washington's cabinet as the first secretary of state, Thomas Jefferson enjoyed five edifying years in residence in Paris. From Adams' absorbing account, which conjures the intellectual, political, and cultural atmosphere of the Paris of the late ancien regime, the reader learns in detail the course of Jefferson's tenure as American minister, his "open, confident entry into an unknown society, a world utterly removed from anything he had experienced before." Jefferson fell under the spell of Paris on the first day of his arrival; and his years there represented an enrichment of the intellect, from which, deduces Adams, he would continue to draw ideas and sustenance for the rest of his life. This reads beautifully, it is the most uplifting of the modern Jefferson biographies; W. H. Adams, "Jefferson's Monticello" and Epicurus "The Art of Happiness" (penguin classis) are great companions to this book.

Jefferson in Paris -- the real story

This is a wonderful book that was so engaging that I hated to finish it. Adams weaves a captivating story of politics on the eve of the French Revolution, the personal relationships that Jefferson developed over his nearly five years in Paris, and character sketches of many of the most important people who filled those years, from John Adams, to the Marquis de Lafayette, to Maria Cosway. There are marvelous illustrations throughout.
