About the Author
Alan Dundes (1934–2005) was professor of anthropology and folklore at the University of California, Berkeley, and published ten books with the University of Wisconsin Press, including Parsing Through Customs: Essays by a Freudian Folklorist; The Vampire: A Casebook; The Blood Libel Legend; and The Cockfight.: A Casebook. He was also the editor of Recollecting Freud by Isidor Sadger.

A Guide to Cinderella

This is an excellent collection of articles on the fairytale Cinderella. My particular favorite is Dundes' own article on the origins of the story we've come to know as King Lear in one of the early Cinderella variants. For anyone interested in the history and criticism of fairytales, this is an excellent book with many different view points on various versions of Cinderella.

A treasure trove of Cinderella knowledge

While taking a literary theory class in school last semester in which among other things we discussed the significance of Fairy Tales in Literature my professor recommended I read this book. After I explained that although the significance of Fairy Tales in cultures all over the world has always fascinated me none have done so more than Cinderella. This book not only gives samples and excerpts of the Fairy Tale from all over the world, including the tale's origins in ancient China but also a critical analysis of the tale which really didn't start until the Victorian Age. You don't really know Cinderella and her many counterparts until you've read this book. i wish case studies of other tales and famous works had even half the depth of this well conceived book.
