This book might be useful to an academic

Ugh, this book is awful as an undergraduate-level text book. The author's writing style makes it VERY hard to read and comprehend. Taken a chapter at a time, it is very difficult to discern the main points, if there are any, as he bounces around and never really gets right to the point. He cites historical examples to the extent, that if the reader does not first have in-depth knowledge of that background, they are meaningless as examples and illustrations. I get the impression that the author just likes to "hear himself talk," but nobody will listen, so he writes it down. This book might be useful to an academic, who wants to have a discussion with a like-minded individual on a very esoteric subject, but beyond that, it is not very useful to an undergraduate as a basic history text.
