Theo: An Autobiography, by Theodore Bikel

An award-winning actor on screen and stage (The Defiant Ones, The African Queen, The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof), an activist for civil rights and progressive causes worldwide, and a singer whose voice has won him great applause, Theodore Bikel here tells his own compelling life story. Born in Austria, raised in Palestine, educated in England, and with a stellar career in the United States and around the world, Bikel offers a personal history parallel to momentous events of the twentieth century. In an eloquent, fiercely committed voice, he writes of the Third Reich, the birth of the State of Israel, the McCarthy witch hunts of the 1950s, the tumultuous 1960s in America, and events in the Middle East.
In this edition celebrating Bikel’s ninetieth birthday, he looks back in a new chapter at his youth in prewar Vienna, his adolescent years, his continued joy in performing timeless songs, his return to Vienna in recent years, and the active life that keeps him feeling young even after nearly a century of adventure.

“Bountiful and rewarding: an intimate memoir by an actor who is passionate on the subject of acting, a generous and endearing storyteller, and an eye-witness to history.”—Jonathan Kirsch, Los Angeles Times

“Bikel has been an articulate spokesman against oppression, dictatorship, inhumanity, war.”—Boston Globe

“An engaging, well-written memoir . . . full of theater stories about playing Mitch opposite Vivien Leigh’s Blanche in the London production of A Streetcar Named Desire, playing Baron von Trapp opposite Mary Martin’s Maria in The Sound of Music, and of course his many performances as Tevye [in Fiddler on the Roof].”—Oakland Tribune

American Cultural History Insights
By Dr. Debra Jan Bibel
I own the hardbound First Edition of this autobiography and am glad that a paperback is now available, particularly because Bikel died last year and there is a forthcoming CD album of his spoken word and recently recorded songs. Multi-talented, Bikel was ubiquitous on television as a character actor, in theatre, in films, singing folk tunes at Newport and at protest rallies and on the radio with his own program, and recording albums of Yiddish and Hebrew songs. This book is filled with his doings but also of stories and lore. One surprising tidbit concerns the Royal family of Great Britain, the male children undergoing formal Jewish circumcision (bris) with Hebrew prayers and that a rabbi with Torah follows carriage processions of the sovereign. Why? Because tradition says that British kings are descended from King David of the Old Testament. Bikel's travels and interactions with folk singers, fellow actors, theater producers, activists in the Civil Rights Movement, politicians, and so forth give a picture of the middle 20th century from the inside by one of the significant players in these cultural events. It reads well and his life story will fascinate. The book, however, little mentions all the many roles he performed on television, on Twilight Zone, Wagon Train, Columbo, Mission Impossible, Gunsmoke, and so forth, and we Trekkers know him as Worf's foster father who visited him on the Enterprise. If you lived through the baroque 1950's and the violent and revolutionary 1960's, you have seen and heard Theo Bikel without giving much thought. Now, read his story.

What a great read!
By Classic Gent
As an avid reader of biographies and autobiographies I was pleased to find this one to be first-rate. Bikel was a multi-talented artist and merits high praise for his social conscience and activism (he served as president of Actors Equity). His fascinating account takes us from World War II Vienna to the future state of Israel (then Palestine) and details his life in London as a student and young actor. His career came into full flower after his emigration to the U.S. and he traces his development into a fine character actor on the Broadway stage as well as the silver screen. We also learn that his abilities as a linguist served him well as a major folk music performer of the 1950s and 60s. In his later years he was recognized by many to be the ultimate "Tevye" in "Fiddler on the Roof", performing the role in countless venues throughout the U.S.

In short, this is a book I found hard to put down and will long remember.
