Debates over women's full participation simmer within many religious groups as well as in the larger society. Bendroth, a lecturer at Andover-Newton Theological Seminary, concisely investigates the roots of this battle within Christian fundamentalism and its precursor, the revivalist tradition. Bendroth discusses the interplay between biblical interpretation and cultural developments, but though she extensively documents trends from 1875 through 1960, she leaves subsequent decades less fully examined. She does give this last period a short yet provocative epilog, arguing that recent controversies have "virtually replayed arguments thoroughly explored nearly a century before" but with little progress toward resolution; she then suggests new areas of inquiry that promise productive investigation. A valuable addition to academic and larger general collections.

Margaret Lamberts Bendroth is Executive Director and Librarian for The Congregational Library in Boston, Massachussetts. She is the author of several books, including "Fundamentalism and Gender, 1875 to the Present" and "Fundamentalists and the City: Conflict and Division in Boston's Churches, 1885 to 1950 ", and has edited several other volumes.

Bendroth recounts fear among fundamentalist patriarchs

Ms. Bendroth has done a superb job is recounting the fear of 19th century fundamentalist patriarchs for powerful women. Her citations of original documents supports her claim that Protestant Fundamentalism's militant denial of women's rights is at least 120 years old. This volume would be more easily digested if the reader had a good working knowledge of Protestant Fundamentalism's history since 1850.

Helpful if unexciting

This is the sort of book that one should read for the information that it contains without expecting much more. Bendroth has done exhaustive research, and her writing is clear enough, but she is not a storyteller. Early on the reader senses that the author has organized her notes in patterns that are roughly logical but which lack adequate synthesis. (After all, what is "fundamentalism," and did its practitioners treat gender issues differently than other contemporary Protestants?) The treatment is also uneven, strongest for the early 20th century, weaker for the late nineteenth and post-war eras.
