In 1963 David P. Sandgren went to Kenya to teach in a small, rural school for boys, where he remained for the next four years. These were heady times for Kenyans, as the nation gained its independence, approved a new constitution, and held its first elections. In the school where Sandgren taught, the sons of Gikuyu farmers rose to the challenges of this post colonial era and, in time, entered Kenyan society as adults, joining Kenya’s first generation of post colonial elites.
In Mau Mau’s Children, Sandgren has reconnects with these former students. Drawing on more than one hundred interviews, he provides readers with a collective biography of the lives of Kenya’s first postcolonial elite, stretching from their 1940s childhood to the peak of their careers in the 1990s. Through these interviews, Mau Mau’s Children shows the trauma of growing up during the Mau Mau Rebellion, the nature of nationalism in Kenya, the new generational conflicts arising, and the significance of education and Gikuyu ethnicity on his students' path to success.

A Great and Enlightening Read
By Steven
This book is a must-read that works on many levels. It provides a focused review of Mau Mau, describes the experience of a young American teacher in Kenya during a period of rich historical significance, and shares the stories of his former students (and their spouses and children) as their world underwent dramatic change. The author's ability to provide a big-picture context of the times while sharing intimate personal stories is truly extraordinary. Perhaps most remarkably, it is easy to draw parallels between the experience of these "Mau Mau children" and contemporary western society.
Mau Mau's children would be an outstanding text for students interested in learning more about the history, sociology, and politics of East Africa around the time of Mau Mau. However, the excellent writing, author's insight and humility, and the fascinating personal stories of poverty and achievement will draw interest from any reader.

There at the beginning
By B. Goddard
Occasionally we are put into history at a pivotal time somewhat unawares. This book traces a teacher and his students through a transformational time in the new history of independent Kenya. There are many books written about pre-independence Kenya, but none have this personal look of a teacher and his students in the first years of the new Kenya, at a new school, and in a new adventure. The author arrived at Giakanja Secondary School in Kenya's Central Province in 1963 and stayed for 4 years. He then returned to the States to earn a doctorate in African Studies and went onto a teaching career. Thirty years after leaving Kenya, Sandgren returned and interview many of his former students. These individual stories are embedded in a most readable history of the Mau-Mau context and high school graduates finding their ways in the world. Thus we see this transformational time in the eyes of young men maturing along with their country. This view is a personal view and compels us in ways that economic data and political tribulations cannot. Read this book.

would have liked to see relation of individuals
By Nicholas Mwaniki
I found book a bit disjointed, would have liked to see relation of individuals, background and school time activities by individual not collectively as done in book
